BSG Duty Blues. A project in progress. Updated pics

Someone suggested I try to make one of these for possible commission work. And since I'm a big fan of the series, and may even want to wear one as a comfy hall costume one day, I decided to give it a go. I have a few tweaks to make, but the overall development was pretty successful.

The main thing I want to fix is that unattractiveness in the underarm. The upper part of the sleeve needs a simple alteration. I also went camera happy before pressing that dart under the neck...:wacko The pants are a little snug too. Diet time. **Fixed**

Other than those obvious fixes and lack of patches and correct buttons... What do you guys/gals think? Not bad eh? The fabric was actually a microfiber I found at JoAnn's. Close enough for a fancy mock-up.

The tailoring looks good, but I think it's probably the wrong shade of blue - looks too bright to me.

From the BSG auction:

I know the fabric isn't dead on or anything. I just wanted to get something similar on the fly that I could use to play around with.

The original fabric is of a strange color that seems to shift in different lighting and since then I think they've been using whatever they find that's closest to match because if you really look at them, you'll notice that there are varying shades and textures among the dress blues on the show.

I did find some good links where the serious BSG costumers try to keep up to date on the best fabrics to use. So if I decide to go into production on these, I'll have some better fabric to work with.

The colour of the fabric did vary. Early on in the show, the fabric was darker, as was the suede and was also cheaper - more like a polyester. When the Pegasus showed up, new costumes were made, from a much nicer suiting wool. The following picture shows the difference in the fabrics - don't get confused though, as two patches were swapped. The uniform with the Pegasus patch is an early Galactica uniform made from the original fabric, and the one with the Galactica patch was from the later batch.

Also, the pattern was changed. The dart was angled off so that it ended underneath the pocket. This picture also shows what the colour looked like in natural sunlight.

Was the pattern changed? Or was this something that differed from person to person? I do think I like the angled dart better.

I updated the pic up top with my new, post alteration pic. Got the sleeves fixed, loosened up the britches, moved the pocket in as I felt it was too close to the armscye. I think I've got this pattern about ironed out. Someday when money isn't so tight I'll have to pick up some fabric and the correct buttons and patches. This would be an easy and fun one for just kicking around in at cons.

Great uniform so far, looking good so far, when i did my uniform I had to special order the buttons directly from Canada were the production got there's from, i had to order in bulk so i got 100 of them, unfortunetly I sold the rest of mine or i'd shoot some your way

You don't happen to have a link for the place that sells those do ya?

Thanks Jodo. I gathered a good deal of info from folks over there already. And I made a little edit in my thread title. Just for you :)

I think I have most of the details banged out now. Everything I could alter on this I did. There are a few other, more extensive alterations that require a rebuild like the buttons are just about 1/2 inch too far apart and the belt loops I got wide enough, but not tall enough. I also need to make the shirt about 3 inches longer so it doesn't risk untucking as much (something you guys can't see here).

And I just realized that the next episode is available for viewing online by now. Sweet!

Yes, after the first season the pattern was slightly altered - mostly just the angling of the dart on the front. There were still original costumes used throughout the rest of the series, such as the ones worn by Adama and Tigh, and they occasionally showed up on the extras as well. A friend of mine, who I regularly worked in the CIC with wore one, as she was so tiny, it was the only one that fit her. The colour variation on her uniform was pretty extreme too - the suede on the shoulders was purple.
