Borderlands 2 Jakobs Pistol build

This Jakobs pistol part took hours to finish the clay-ing. You may notice that I prefer to build sprue and vent formers into my molds instead of cutting them afterward. Nice round sprues and vents unmold easily and cleanly.

Yea! I finally got started on pouring the molds for the Jakobs pistol yesterday!

What flavor of silicone do you like? I've played around with a couple but I'm not set.

I'm using Smooth-On MoldMax 30. This is the first time I've used a pourable silicone, all of my past molds have been pourable urethane or silicone putty (for small molds). I'm really liking the MoldMax. I have had no curing problems, and it degasses nicely leaving no bubbles. Several of my old urethane molds have turned back into sticky goo, that stuff can be unstable in the long run.

OK, I’ve got a bunch of the molds all de-clayed (un-clayed?, dis-clayed?), and ready for the second pour today.

Disclayed. As in, "I'm completely disclayed at the disclay of your prowess in working with dis clay."

Eight years of higher education, folks. :p

I've hit a bit of a roadblock for the moment on finishing up the molds for the Jakobs pistol. I was readying the last of the molds for pouring silicone, and discovered that all three of my cans of mold spray release are buggered up, and don't spray. I don't think that I can get more locally (one of the downsides of living in the middle of the pacific ocean is lack of access to materials). Unfortunately, shipping of aerosols by air is very expensive. I will look more into my alternatives tomorrow, when everyone is back to work. Dang!

Damn. Sorry to hear that. I understand the problem with aerosol cans. Best of luck, I hope this all sorts out soon.

Many thanks for sharing the details on this amazing build. This is one that's been on my to-build wish list as well, but you just blew my expectations away. Darn roadblocks, good luck moving forward and look forward to seeing your other builds.

I've got another can of mold release on it's way here (I hope!). I can in theory pour the first half of my few remaining molds without any release, as the silicone is not supposed to stick to the clay or painted master, but the second half of the pour definitely needs release between the two layers of silicone.

No joke. I'm always sure to work release into every nook and cranny. I have nightmares about failed release applications.

If you have issues shipping aerosols maybe try a wax mold release like Meguiars mirror glaze. I've had success with Vaseline thinned down.

I'm supposed to have some spray release on the way, but I'll keep that in mind. The last spray release I used was a wax based release (Synair Synlube 531) and I really liked it because I could buff it on the surface of the model after it was sprayed and dried. It created a very smooth mold surface. Unfortunately, after having three cans of the stuff fail, I'm not going to buy any more. I'm now going to try Mann Ease Release 200. I'm hoping I can also get a smooth mold surface with it. If not, I will experiment with paste wax mold release.

Mann 200 works quite well if you do thin a couple thin coats. Don't let it build up too much or it'll show in the mold.

I finally finished up the two Jakobs Pistol frame part molds. These took a bit more work, as they are a little more complicated than the other two part molds. For parts with severe undercuts or odd shapes, multi part molds are often required. These two parts each required a three part mold, with a separate block that inserts into the mold to create a cavity, in one case, or allows the part to release on the other part.

Now I am almost ready to start casting parts. All I need to do is bite the bullet (no pun intended), and part with a big chunk of change to have some resin shipped over here. Because I live in the middle of the ocean (Hawaii), it costs nearly as much for shipping on supplies like resins as the materials cost in the first place. Ouch.

My casting resin has arrived, and I have begun casting. My first casts have been partially successful, which means, of course, that they were a failure. I’ve got issues with uncured sections, bubbles and voids. After a late night online, I think I’ve got most of the problems figured out. Now it’s raining like crazy, and humidity turns out to be part of the problem, so I will be waiting for the weather to clear before I try again.
