Blade Runner Marco blaster rebuild WIP

OK, posted this over at propsummit, and figured I'd share the love here too.

This project started as a throw away from a friend who didn't want this resin marco recast. It didn't have any greeblies, no triggers, or bolt handle, or anything like that.

My friend Ryan got it off ebay for $10 or some such, and left it my house, and the next time I asked him about it, he just just said to toss it, he didn't want it.

I kept it in a box, and figured I'd throw it away eventually, but then as the weather started getting cooler here in ATL, I wanted a project to use to get back into the building groove.

A project that I could destroy if it didn't work out, no big loss. So I started working with this giant piece of resin!

First order of business was to add on a correct mag housing extension. I also had a bit of an outline for the direction I was going with this, sort of a follow up to my "black and silver" blaster.

I have some more progress pics to upload, but this is where she stands right now. Needs weathering, touching up, and I have some details to add. But all in all I'm happy I didn't throw her out!

I painted the grip by hand, trying to achieve something like an exotic black ivory. Once I was done with the brush giving it a pearled marbled kind of look I gave it three layers of acrylic high gloss clear coat. In the end I'm happiest with the grip so far, but I still have some parts to add!

Lots of cutting and bending of aluminum going on, and I used a gutted Marvy "lepen" for the sight rod. Two metal USP triggers, and a magazine from an airsoft shotgun.

I chopped the gun up into 3 section, dremelled out the barrel and replaced it with clear PVC piping. That's probably my only regret, that I should have used a bigger tube for the barrel.

I'll post more pics as I finish her up this week, and I'll get around to posting some other works I've been doing too, now that the weather is cooling off 'round here. :)

Yea, I like the clip it has, PKD's are pretty big so i'm guessing its like a cannon with a huge clip like that! But overall I lie it, great job man

remarkable save, on an otherwise poor casting of a BR blaster.

I especially like the color scheme on the grips. What did you use to paint it?

I used acrylic brush on paint, three soft brushes of various sizes. It was based in the same ultra flat black that's on the main body of the gun, then I did a thin coat of white pearl, using the brush to dab the paint on in an uneven way, and give it a bit of texture.

Then I used some very thin acrylic mettalic black and I textured it on much the same way for the pearl coat, then I used various coats to bring out the striping.

Then, a spray on acrylic glossy clearcoat sealed it all up. :)

I was going for a black pearl look (not ivory as I said before) or maybe some kind of offworld mineral or something crazy like that.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. It's bigger than an accurate model, yes, I'll take a picture next to one of my Coyle blasters for reference and post that this evening.

Noeland, I cannot wait to see the compare. I know the Marco is way off, but I do not think I have seen one side by side with an accurate model.

Nice build :)

Makes me wonder why I'm bothering to make mine look more accurate.
By the way, the bolt lever I'm considering using was once the quick-release for a mountainbike seatclamp.

In my completist nature and interest of the blasters, I hope to one day own a Marco. It is part of BR blaster history for sure. I almost bought one in the early 90's at a sci-fi convention, but it took me almost 10 years before I bought my first Blade Runner gun, a Rick Ross PKD-2.

The Marco definitely seems like a Russian version of the PKD. Totally brute utility. The clip certainly accentuates that. Very cool. Are you planning on aging and weathering it and the metal parts at all?

Wow nice save!

Looks like a meaner beefed up Military Version that some bad-ass Human, or replicant would carry

I'll be weathering the whole gun to a certain degree. I want it to look used, holster worn, but not completely neglected or abused. Considering my first go round with rub and buff for this effect, and using some acrylic black paint on some of the metal pieces too.

My initial intention was to go full on military looking with OD green grips, and accents. I might still do a version like that. This one ended up, in my mind, being a smugglers best friend. Something you might see Jayne Cobb packing if Serenity were set in the BR world.:)

Noeland, I cannot wait to see the compare.

I took a few shots last night and didn't post them up because my dinner ended up making me very sick to my stomach, and I was a little busy either laying in bed in pain, or in the bathroom in more pain. :cry

So I'll post them up tonight, but I was surpised in the end, the gun really isn't that much bigger than my Coyle V. 4.5 (or whatever it is) it just seems like it. The grip is much bigger around, but that's not reflected well in the photos.

Well, again, I initially set out to do that too, then started leaning in a heavily abused military direction, and ended up with maybe "a stolen from the military, and modded by a smuggler" version. :lol

I'd love to see a shot of that bolt! Could be a possible resource for all of us scratch built loving blaster fans. :)

Wow nice save!

Thanks. I just can't bare to throw away props, even if they're in bad shape, I gotta try! I gotta try. :)

Yeah, sorry. You're right, but . . .

Life ain't always cast resin and knurled aluminum knobbie things. :wacko

It occured to me today that I never did post pics of this thing distressed.

It's not my best work, but I'm thinking of having another pass at her now that the weather is getting warmer.
