Blade Runner Blaster Stunt Cast (LOTS OF PICS)

I always wanted to get a Blade Runner Blaster for the longest time and I noticed that Richard Coyle was making some castings of the stunt version of the blaster for a really attractive price. As a college student, I realized this would be my only chance to get one for a long time, so I jumped in at the last minute and got one.

It just arrived today and first off, it looks freaking amazing. The gun itself is a million times more awesome when you see it in person.

Since this is a casting of the stunt gun, there are some differences between the hero gun and the stunt gun. The biggest difference is the lack of LEDs and some other minute details. The cast itself has some spots and porousness holes that I'm assuming is from the original cast and or from impurities from the resin. I'm sure some light sanding would fix it. If you have any suggestions to fix the "roughness" or those spots you see in some of those pics, please let me know.

Only problem I have with the cast is that the cylinder release got messed up.

Other than that, I am very very happy with this :D Thanks a lot, Richard! I'll post some more pics later.

Thanks a lot guys! I guess I'm part of the BR Blaster club now, lol.

I grabbed my Chinese knock off blaster toy and compared it to the cast. When they're right next to each other, you can really see the difference.

I also got some translucent grips from Richard too. They are absolutely perfect!

If you did a careful sanding and puttying it could pass for a hero.

How much mollah was that one?

The cast was $75. I'm going to practice my sanding and puttying with my other resin gun before I get busy with this guy. Any suggestions and tips for working with putty and bondo?

Stay away from the red spot putty in the tube! It's junk! It was good for its time...that time is up! So get some glazing putty, that is activated! Go to a body shop supply store, and see it they have Dolphin Glaze, by Upol company. There is also Plastic glaze,by Evercoat. Then there id Icing, by U.S. Chemical, but it doesn't sand as easily

Bottom line, you need an activated glazing putty, that sands easy with 400, to, 600 grit

Really?!?!? That thing is air bubble city.

Yeah, I agree. Granted, they really show up in the sunlight but they're harder to notice with indoor lighting.

Thanks for the tip about glazing putty, Jason. I'm going to get some later today.

I'm afraid of messing the whole thing up when I put the glazing putty on there. I need to be more confident. :p Are there any specific tools you guys use for apply the putty on?

I'd sand everything with wet 'n dry, tape over the delicate stuff like the printing, and prime, sand, prime, sand, prime, sand, putty, sand, prime, putty, sand....

I will jump in and try to clear a few things up.

This is made from a oringinal real stunt prop. Back in the 80s someone got a hold of a real rubber stunt casting from the film and threw rubber over it and turn out a few copies.

I then made my early Blade Runner model from a couple of them, cutting them up for parts.

I never exspected them to not make more, but after their early short run they never did any more.

There have been many a recasting of these early models many with screws and parts replaced and reworked.

I finaly was able to borrow a early copy to copy and have offered a run UNCHANGED from what I got, so this is a slice of history...

It is not intended as a builder, more as a keepsake.

It is what was used on the film set, other that being not being made of rubber and they may have also done some hard solid castings for the Policemen.

So I said do nothing to it.

I am also offering a recreation of this stunt props as a kit and as build ups, where I offer both better detailing, both as a recreation of the stunt prop and as a hero with working trigger and working LEDs for those that want to do a Hero stunt.

As in the text I offer them as kits as well, I also am also posting in the junkyard.

Yeah, I talked to Richard already and I figured I'll just go ahead send back the stunt cast and get the "Recreated Stunt Casting" which comes with the removable magazine and the amber grips. Sorry again for the extra work, Richard; I'm glad I brought this up though, or otherwise I would have started messing up the cast.

While this stunt cast would be really awesome to have with a policeman costume, the amber grips are my favorite part of the gun so personally, I rather get the hero gun than the solid one piece.

I have the ok to copy it from the present owner, and I did a deal back in the day some 25 years ago when I got the first copies.

It is not what we call a recasting, it is a copy of a studio prop, we (at the time and I think still do) conside props gotten off the studio fair game, as long as the people who offered it are no longer making them and selling them. (The oringinal guys did some 10 to 15 some 25 years ago, and stop at that point...)

It has been about as long from the last good copy of this quality in its original shape warts and air bubbles and all.

Yeah, I figured all those flaws were present in the original cast, since this was originally cast for stunts.

They were, I just had a bit of a discusstion over that, some have seen copies where someone replaced most of the screws and had to rework the front of the Styer, and based on better screw heads they were sure the copy of a copy was the oringinal, and these with their flaws were the recasted copy of a copy...

And normally that would be a good way to judge them, but not in this case.

Here is some of my ad copy on this very subject:

During filming of many films which will have some action scenes, the prop department will make up a few "Stunt" props, usually these are cast in rubber so that being softer they are less likely to cause harm if a actor is hit by one or falls onto one, so they replace replacing the real steel prop. Or in the case of other objects like chairs and tables they will use balsa wood and pre cut the parts to help in breaking them, these are known as breakaway props.

With Blade Runner they seem to have made the stunt props by filling all holes and openings in the real working prop, and to make things even more interesting these were made before they have finished making the final prop for the film.

It is believed that there was only one "Hero" prop made of real gun parts, this is uncommon but seems to be the case here, all the stunt props have the same serial number of the main working hero props # 5223.

There are number of differences between the stunt prop and the filmed prop. The stunt mold was made before the following changes were made:

We can only guess how these differences happened, a few ideas come to mind, that once on the set it was found that the grip was a little small for Harrison Ford's hand, so they needed to rework the grip by adding in a cut out to front on the butt plate , a finger relief...

Also the prop as first presented to the director was still all black, still having its original bluing, and it might have been a lot like Classic Star Trek, when they saw in the dailies how it show so little detail, (like the black and white Phasers in season one of Trek) that they asked to fix it to show up more on camera, because for the filming the real guns parts, the Steyr and Bulldog show raw steel, their bluing was removed..making the metal lighter and brighter.

And also to show up more within the film they also added five red LEDs and two green LEDs. (this may have been to make the gun look more Sci-Fi est...)

As you can see the stunt props is in poor shape and has a lot of damage from molding off a rubber stunt casting and is a total static model, no moving parts.

Really?!?!? That thing is air bubble city.

Sorry, Bro...I'm no expert...but I still thought it looked good:$ Maybe it's just that I love this blaster so much, need glasses, have been working waaaay to many hours...or just am a complete noob when it comes to things like this.

Once again it is a casting off a oringinal RUBBER stunt casting that was bubble city, that is one of the tells that shows it is the real thing.

So keeping it faithful and true to what was oringinally found I made no changes and fixed nothing, I kept it as found: oringinal.
