Limited Run BLADE RUNNER 2049: Officer K (Ryan Gosling) Jacket/Coat - NOW SELLING

I can't say I feel encouraged that the coats are shipping "regardless of a solution". I can see the coat being shipped to those who have expressed that the color isn't a concern, but why ship them to those who are without a concrete solution?

Because any solution I come up with and share will be with the intent that people will do the alteration to their own. It shouldn't be difficult, even for people not experienced in these things.

I understand that. I guess I am just concerned they are being sent prematurely in the potential event a satisfactory solution isn't found. Obviously I say this having no idea what you're findings have been like thus far. You seem confident though so all I can do is wait patiently.

Alright suckers, buckle-up: I got my coat and it is excellent.

The only flaw for me is that the sleeve length came in a bit too short, and I blame myself for that. Had to take my measurements myself, and I knew--I just knew--I'd shorted it. Thought I was being paranoid, but nope (stupid gangly arms). Plus my mis-measuring was exacerbated by the way the angle cut of the cuff falls. I've got some mod ideas in mind though, so I'm not chuffed. Perfect screen accuracy is less important to me than wearability; I bought this coat to wear because THE FUTURE IS NOW.

Ahem. Anyway.

The color is good. Yes, even the fur. This is, I suppose, down to subjective taste... but it's not just about that. It is not orange. It's kind of a... sienna brown? Yeah.

Look, I stayed mum during the last several pages of thread but now that I have the coat in hand I think this is worth saying: Cameras and the human eye are very different machines. And if your setting are on auto, things can get strange fast. I know enough about white balancing to try and make up for it, at least w/ indoor lighting (see below)... might take some outdoor shots later but it's too dim now. The fur definitely does appear darker than the dirty beige-ish screen coat (I think...), but I am confident the right kind of weathering will get it there. It's within a reasonable margin.

Color is a tough business... and honestly, for my money, the color of the rest of the coat is so damn spot-on that it overshadows everything else. This range of green is slippery as hell. Y'know how the only reason we know his coat is green is because it was literally called that in the film? (Okay yes sure... and also it was mentioned in interviews w/ the costumer.) That wasn't just Deakins-magic; it's like that in person. Really something to see. Printing came out well too. Understated, but still distinct--again, very much like the film. I was worried that my being a built like the Slenderman would smoosh the back too much, but it's lined up quite well for my proportions

Also: flipping up & closing the collar is nice and cozy. With the wind chill factored in, it was about 17 °F outside where I live and I was walking around comfortably.

I suppose I am a pretty easy sell, so I guess take my gushing praise w/ a grain of salt, but... this is a great piece.
And, as requested, it came w/ a nice square of fabric so I'll be testing waterproofs soonish.

Cheers,

--Thaddeus

Looks good and as expected the camera does sometimes lie. If I had a penny for every time I explained to someone that’s films are colour graded...

Fur looks much better in your pics Thaddeus. That said I’m in run two anyway so I assume mine will be a little darker. Regardless, coat looks sweet!

Ahh that'll be perfect then mate. It's good news to hear that the fur actually takes dye. That means if someone wants to dye theirs after the fact they'll actually be able to.

I used the term ‘dye’ loosely referring to darkening with paint or the like as has already been mentioned.

@ThadExMachina Thanks for sharing those pics. The type of fur used is far and away the best I've seen so far. Too bad about the sleeve length. Otherwise it looks like an excellent fit. What kind of modification ideas are you considering for the sleeves?

Ok guys, some good news. I think I've found a good solution to altering the color of the fur for those who are displeased with it. It's simple, low cost, and seems to change the color pretty well without altering the texture.

On the left is the before, and on the right is the after. Phone cameras and lighting being what they are it's not a perfect photo, but I think it shows the idea pretty well.

I'll be making a complete guide (probably a quick video) showing ALL the details, but here's the basic idea: 93% isopropyl alcohol (less than $2 at a pharmacy or grocery store) and Ranger Alcohol inks in a spray bottle. I've seen these inks for sale at Hobby Lobby, Joann's, and Michael's, they're like $10 for a pack of three and all of those stores usually have a 40% off coupon. Those stores also all carry little spritz bottles. So overall this was a $10 fix for me since I have those stores in close proximity. It took a bit of time but it was not hard to do.

Video to come soon I hope!

Looks great. Happy with the 'after' color and a little polish will finish it off nicely.
Looking forward to your guide so I can get what I need on order ready for my jacket.

Do you know whether these Ranger alcohol inks will survive a wash?

In regards to the spritz bottles, I assume you mean something like this?

Thanks Zlurpo! Could you provide an amazon link to that ranger alcohol ink?

Yep, I tested washing the one in the photo above before I posted it. The photo is from before the wash but I didn't take a new photo because it didn't change at all.

That spritz bottle looks like it would work just great, it's exactly the kind of thing I mean, although that one is a bit smaller than what I used it shouldn't make a bit of difference.
