Bioshock Infinite Fireman WIP

Hello there, I thought I would start off by introducing myself, My name is (Content hidden), and I love costuming. I really got a thirst for it when I was younger, and every year I made something new, from little ninja costumes for Halloween, to a Juggernaut from MW3 (pictures on my profile). As I got more and more into costuming, I wanted to do something big and challenging (not to mention detailed), and I had an epiphany while playing Bioshock Infinite.. Why not a Fireman?

I you don't know what a Fireman is, it's an enemy from the world of Bioshock Infinite. Firemen are citizens of Columbia sentenced to be set aflame as penance for their sins. The padded suits they wear are linked to an iron exoskeleton that serves to conduct heat from the boilers strapped to their backs. The boilers in turn use a bottle of Devil's Kiss as a source of thermal energy, in addition to providing the Firemen with their ability to manipulate fire. They can do things like throw fire bombs, and if the opportunity presents itself, detonate to kill Booker in a fiery inferno. The thing that made me want to do a Fireman was the fantastic appearance it had. From the exoskeleton to the amount of leather, the Fireman is imposing, and looks like a perfect costume to do. I might as well start off with a few photos of the beast:

My plan is to do the suit in layers, which will consist of:
- A lycra/spandex undersuit to absorb sweat (and be a buffer between the next layer and my skin)
- A quilted bodysuit, made from a simplified coveralls fabric pattern and fabric I will buy
- The chest core (EVA foam or pepakura)
- Leather skin over the chest core
- Arm, leg, and waist belts
- Modified boots
- The actual mechanical pieces and their mounts ("Metal" will be made from smooth-cast)
- The furnace
- Helmet with lighting elements

One good thing that has come out of my years of knowing people, is I know I can get some of this material for free, like the leather and all of the brass elements. So far I have a few concept sketches of how the "mechanics" of the suit will work. One reoccurring issue I have had is that a normal human being's body and a video game model have differences, mostly since a model can glif and stretch where it needs to, so some things will be modified slightly so that the suit stiff functions perfectly. When this is completed, It will be a fairly imposing 6'4" steampunk monster.

Just a few concept sketches and views on how I will make the mechanics of the arms work. It's confusing to get everything the right shape, and even though I've set multiple requests to Irrational, they have yet to share the 3-D model of the Fireman to me (they did it with Elizabeth for someone else though.. weird)

Well, not intended as a Necro... but I have began making progress! The last year of my life was wrapped around the US ARMY... so if that's any hint to why I was away so long, but now I can finally begin work!

While I was away, I searched heavily for anything other than the simple in-game screenshots that had been captured already, but search as I did, I never located any renders of the Fireman himself... even though literally every other character had been rendered! So my first matter of business was to create my own renders of the Fireman. After downloading countless bundles of files, I finally managed to locate his in some sub-folder, and after tinkering in 3DS MAX for a few hours, managed to pull the following renders:

With these renders, I'll finally be able to grab some accurate proportions for the costume.

To start off, I decided to tackle the metal cage of a helmet that the Fireman wears. I loaded the 3d poly-model into 3DS, and tweaked it into a pepakura-friendly model:

After that, it was only a matter of printing it out (after a few sizing attempts) and assembling it. This is what I finished tonight:

Most likely I'll finish the rest tomorrow, but I'm still undecided on how I'm going to finish the helmet. I'd rather not fiberglass/bondo/rondo it (trying to stay cheap for now) so I was considering doing a sculpt off of the pep in clay and pulling a few vaccuform molds from it. That, or I could also slush cast it (If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated). That's all I have for now, until tomorrow!

Short update:
Finished pepping the bucket (minus the ear pod, but more on that later). Decided to move right onto step two which was to use the pep for a model. Went down to Michaels and grabbed some low-density stiff florist foam, and after gluing a few together, started on cutting.

My god does this stuff make a mess, not to mention it's all electrostatically charged, so no sweeping it up.

So... much... foam.

So eventually, after a few hours of trial and error, I got the shape I was going for!

Now I just need to seal it up, finish the back half, and do a few Vaccuform pulls, and I should be good to go.

One of the great accomplishments of Bioshock Infinite (and Bioshock) in my mind is the fully fleshed out atmosphere. Some characters and elements are more iconic than others, but everything just fits together so perfectly. I admit I was always too bust fighting the firemen to admire their design, but I can see why you chose to bring it into the real world. I think this build is just begging for lights, and I look forward to seeing what you do with it.
