Best Director

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

Well they have listed the current working directors, not listed them as the all time greatest.

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

Not a bad list actually, at least as far as America and Europe are concerned.

I'd be more comfortable if the category read "25 Best Working Directors Outside of China, India, or Korea."

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

Oh, yeah, Ridley's an actor's director, alright!

Ford was driven to distraction by Scott's attention to his sets; he would look up and see Scott perched way up on a crane thirty feet in the air, peering into his lens, composing his perfect shots, and wonder: what am I supposed to be doing here? "I played a detective who did no detecting," he complained. "There was nothing for me to do but stand around and give some vain attempt to give some focus to Ridley's sets."

"Harrison wanted to be directed," says Ladd, "and Ridley wanted to fool around with light. Harrison just wanted to be reassured, and Ridley didn't want to be bothered. It was the same on A L I E N."

:lol Poor Harrison, I'm sure in the end he knew he was better off on his own! :lol

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

It drives me crazy that people call Ridley an actor's director.

As Rob said earlier in the thread, actors chased Stanley out... not too bad for a guy who wasn't an actor's director.

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

Very interesting thread, as I'm an aspiring Director myself...

My personal favorite is, without a doubt, Christopher Nolan. Everything he has done has been a cinematic game-changer and I expect him to continue creating amazing films.

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

Didn't read through the thread but I hope someone said Michael Mann.

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

I make no pretense of being a student of film, I just know what I consider good.

For a me, a great director makes films that you're children's children will likely still be enjoying.

For this reason, I'd like to add Shyamalan to the list. Yes, he's made some crap, but hasn't every one? If we forget about films like "Wide Awake", and "The Last Airbender", we are left with a catalog of unique, well conceived, character oriented, visually striking, supernatural thrillers that stand up to repeated viewings unlike most modern films.

***EDIT: I am not claiming him as the "best", or my "favorite", but this thread hardly needs more accolades(or otherwise) thrown in the direction of established greats. I just felt that he needed to be considered.

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

There is no such thing as "the best" when it comes to something like this. Better to refer to "your favorite".

I have several favorites and they all offer something the others don't.

Kevin Smith
Quentin Tarantino
Coen Brothers
Wachowski Brothers
Ridley Scott

I could go on and on. I don't think I could ever narrow it down to just one.

I cant believe I left Woody Allen off my list. Somehow I still havent seen Midnight in Paris. I think I will just go purchase it this weekend. I know its good. All of his movies are.

You might want to check out the post immediately preceding your last one.

There's plenty of directors I like. Granted, they all have varying degrees of greatness in their works. Some have made movies long after their prime. And I like 'em all for different reasons. Do I think another director could have done better on some? Sure. Do I also think that there are some that director could have done worse, no matter how bad the movie was? Definitely. Do I like a lot of the directors listed all ready? You better believe it. Why? If you haven't been paying attention to the post, then get some new glasses.

BTW, I see your Charlie Chaplin and raise you four engineering students pulling a three day stint to finish a project. :lol
