It wasn't blatant, but I do think it was represented in his actions--saving the crew on the burning oil rig, saving Earth from Zod and his World Engine, etc.. But we humans are so accustomed to eventually being screwed over by people who are "doing what is right" that many of us are constantly on guard while we're waiting for the other shoe to drop (particularly those in a position of power or wealth whose selfish interests are at stake). Also, modern times are very different from the days when Superman first made his way into the public consciousness, so having scenes of him espousing the virtues of "truth, justice, and the American way" while wearing a stars-and-stripes tee shirt would just be campy and silly to most modern audiences (and probably offensive to a lot of audiences outside of the U.S.)....I don't think Superman needs to be infallible to be relevant and resonant. But I do think that what was missing from MoS was the sense of doing what is right being what drives Superman...
I think that's an accurate way of describing the characters' base motivations, and I hope they're going to explore that in Batman vs. Superman; it would be far more interesting than yet another "Let's you and him fight" movie....To me, that's the core difference between Superman and Batman, and what makes them equally interesting, yet very different characters.
Batman does what he believes is necessary.
Superman does what he believes is right...
But the bottom line is that Man of Steel was the beginning of a new era for DC-based movies and, with the success of Marvel's Avengers movie, their current short game is to have everything lead towards a Justice League movie; that's the only explanation I can think of for them working so hard to include Wonder Woman and Aquaman in Batman vs. Superman. It's like they're writing a novel, and Man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman are only the first and second chapters. Hopefully we will one day look back and see that all of these DC movies form a coherent story, but that remains to be seen.
