Batgirl Cowl Sculpt, Elseworld's Finest

Okay, got a few pix of my wife wearing the first pull. She's not wearing any makeup or eye black, and all I could talk her into was her black shirt and cape, for now. We do plan to get a balaclava to wear under the cowl/neck armor, so you won't see any exposed neck:

And here's the same cowl, trimmed for a more traditional Batgirl look:

Once the rest of her suit is finished and I do a better, thicker pull for her, we'll take some new pix of the whole suit.

I freakin' love this! I threw together an Elseworld's Finest Batgirl last year for Dragon*Con and had to settle for cutting up a standard Batman cowl. I hate it! It's uncomfortable and just not right. I'd love to get something like this when I'm ready to revisit that costume for version 2.0. Fabulous job!

Thanks! The lady who originally commissioned this apparently wasn't able to finish her EF suit, so I'd love to see what you came up with. And I am offering these in the Junkyard, so just give me a shout when you're ready.:D

I will definitely hit you up when I'm ready to revisit this costume! Here is what I came up with for v.1.0:

The armor and "belt" is all craft foam. Each piece attaches to the suit with snaps (which have a tendency to come unglued more than I care for, in fact you can see one of the belt pieces is dangling there). The suit is just your standard lycra bodysuit that I painted the emblem on. The cape is stretch pvc that is also attached to the suit with snaps (under the pauldrons). I'd like to redo the armor in sintra to make it sturdier, attach some boot soles to the feet of the suit and possibly make a couple of the belt "pouches" functional to use as pockets. I also never got the kneepad thingys done and I'd like to finish those up at some point. Other than that and getting a better cowl, I'm pretty happy with it.

Something I'd like to run by you, since you've obviously studied this style and such: I was going to attempt to insert some mirrored lenses from a pair of cheap sunglasses into the eye holes of my cowl because I wanted to try to get the silver effect of the comic and action figure. The only reason it didn't work is that the lenses would fog horribly since my cowl fits so poorly and wouldn't allow for any circulation at all. Do you think that's something that's possible with this style?

Nice! It's an unusual suit, but I think you captured it very well! The cowl's not bad, but it doesn't look like it fits you too well.

I've never done lenses in a cowl, but I suspect it would be helpful to have a cowl that didn't fit your face as tight. It still may fog, I don't know.

Another option (and one you won't have to worry about fogging) is to use a mesh---I've heard some people have had good luck with fine aluminum mesh, the kind used to make armatures for sculpting:
Amaco Wireform Mesh - BLICK art materials

I know there are plastic meshes out there, too, that would work. Either could be painted lightly to match what you had mind if their natural color doesn't work for you.

Thanks! The cowl definitely doesn't fit me well at all. But it's really not a bad cowl for just a standard Rubies version.

The thought recently crossed my mind about some sort of mesh for the eyes, like what people use for Spiderman suits. Is that the same type of wire mesh you linked? I think something like that could work and would allow some air circulation. I have a feeling no matter how well the cowl fit that lenses would likely fog.

I think the mesh I showed is the same, or at least very similar to what some people have used for Spidey eyes. I bought some of that mesh to use with a cowl I was working on before I started sculpting cowls, and it worked fine. I think I had to double it up to keep people from seeing my eyes, but I could still see through it pretty well.

I know of one guy who I think successfully put lenses in a cowl without them fogging up, but his cowl is well ventilated and has a built in fan. For most people, I don't think the lenses work very well.
