Back to the Future Part II

it's coming nicely together I guess ^^

If someone has HD scans of the pictures I would be really grateful :x

It's not bad, Emma, but if you want to be accurate, you should pay more attention to the fonts and the positions of the single letters. All the fonts you are using, are wrong, sorry. ;)

Well I don't know any fonts they are using. So I'm using similar fonts. What are the right fonts?
I made the font myself for the USA today logo. They looked pretty accurate in my opinion. I have a low scan resolution scan under my text and it was fitting perfectly.. But yeap.. Any help? ;)

Okay, let me show you what I mean. Here are a few examples.

As for the fonts, I will see what I can do for you. ;)

So Roland, are you saying she should find the same font or try and manipulate or even create a new font. I am sure using the same font is always ideal but sometimes impossible with all the fonts out there. "What the font" fails me most of the time and I can't really make my own (I'm no good at it). I do try and find a similar font and manipulate it; change the size, thickness, height, etc. Some times I can match it this way.

Sorry to but in, this is very interesting to me.

I think Emma's work is great so far. However, I understand Roland's desire for detail, spacing and placement. I look forward to seeing how this turns out. A wonderful learning experience.

Best,

I agree with Roland here, I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist at times, so I always try to use the correct fonts and correct positioning if at all possible.

If I can't find the correct font I tend to find the closest match then edit it to match exactly. As I work primarily in Vector software (Xara) and fonts are also vectors I just convert them to editable shapes and tweak them to fit. I explained how I did this in the Xara tutorial I posted a while back. As Emma is using Illustrator she could use the same technique.

In the past I have created my own fonts (I recreated the font on the MegaCity Credits from Dredd), but I only tend to do that if there is a large body of text to be filled in, and I'll need most of the alphabet anyway.

That's exactly what I always do. ;) Of course, she should not do that. But I know Emma is the same hair-splitter as I am and she could never be happy with her work as long as she knows there are any correctable errors.

"What the font" often does a good job for me. Or you can try "What font is". Sometimes it can even help to describe the font on "Identifont".

Emma's work IS great and far better than what most of the other people could ever do. But I think we all (Emma including) want to have the most accurate replicas, if it's possible (I know there are limits, of course). As a designer myself, that's what I owe to the people. :)

I'm glad he pointed this out to be honest :)

I really want it to be perfect too! It's just that I had really bad scans, or the resolutions is too low for the file I am making, so it's a bit complicated. The images I have can be distorted by the way the newspaper had been taken in pictures or scanned :)

I will buy a usa today newspaper from the 80's, I'm waiting to receive it, and I will base the whole thing on it. So I'll make sure of how everything is positioned too, because the template looks t be pretty much the same for every USA TODAY newspapers at the time :)!

But yeah would be great to know the exact fonts, I guess I can distort them. I have already played with the ones I'm already using ^^ so that was extremely tricky, I tried my best, but I guess the pictures I'm using are not "straight" so the words are not really at the right place... Errr

I will tell you what I've been using so far:

BorisBlackBloxx > "the nation's paper" etc.
Montreal-Serial-Heavy > "SLAMBALL..." etc
Microsoft Yi Baiti > "Thursday" (headlines)
Arial > "october", "thumb bandits strike" ect
Aparajita > ""after amputating..." ect
Muro > "Youth Jailed"
OldSansBlack > "martin mcdly arrested..."
CMSansSerif-Medium > "youth gang"

MAN XD That's a lot of fonts haha!

(dont worry for the pictures and squares, I'm just testing a few things xD)

Try these scans (click to enlarge, but attention: each one of them is about 5 MB):

I don't know who has made those scans (I just know that Vivek had posted them here), but I know they are made from the original scans, that were included with the limited UK Blu-ray collectors edition of BTTF (the "tin box").

It's weird that you know me so well without even having met me haha!

This is very true! Thanks for the scans Roland, I will try to fix this! I think I will wait to have the USA TODAY original newspaper, I think it will be a great help in the construction of the main page :)

By the way? Would you like to have something on the back page? Even if the original prop has nothing on the back, maybe it could be fun to have something on there? After all... It's meant to be a proper newspaper, never seen one with a blank page on the back hehe :p

I had this idea... As the 1955 newspaper had this "new car" for the advertisement of it, I was thinking, maybe I could put the Goldie Wilson III's "new hovering car"? Like he does on the hologram before Marty goes into the cafe 80's... What do you think? That could be a fun concept :p

=P

While I will be waiting for the USA TODAY newspaper, I'm going to work on the goldie's logo x)

A very nice idea. But if you still want to be screen accurate with the inside and back pages as well, you should read the following thread: http://www.therpf.com/f45/bttf-ii-2015-usa-today-screen-accurate-correct-inside-pages-found-165322/ ... and then buy the Tuesday, May 16, 1989 edition of USA Today. ;)

I can't find this specific edition, but I'm bidding on a 80's edition that got the "money section", So hopefully I could scan it and create some filler pages with it n_n!!
