Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build NEW VIDEO JACKET pg 27!!!

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

Crap. Oh well. The pattern looked so close, but it seems we are foiled by the inaccurate scale...

Another option for the gray-colored textured jackets parts is textured ABS panels/sheets. The problem is that many/most standard textured ABS sheets have a texture that resembles many raised intersecting rows, almost a brain-like texture, whereas the jacket seems to have more of a "flecked" or "cracked" texture than what textured ABS appears to be. It is about the right depth/coarseness of texture. Take a look:

Here's a closeup:

You can get a 24" X 48" sheet here...

...or a smaller 12" X 24" sheet off of EvilBay here:

Since the texture on the gray areas is so subtle and only noticed up close, any replica with a "close-enough" depth/coarseness of texture will still look 100% accurate at anything more than 1 foot away, and anyone leaning in closer than 1 foot to admire my jacket will probably cause me to back away to maintain that 1-foot minimum distance. :lol

Of course, if the correct gray texture pattern or material can be found, great. Just sayin'...

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

The pics I posted were of ABS with haircell finish, but I'm pretty sure that other textures of ABS are out there.

In the end, it may very well be a faux leather/embossed vinyl texture design that matches best. That's what I'm researching now.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

This hair cell pattern is everywhere. It's only when ya looking ya see it. I can spot 3 different things right now in the room I'm in with it on. The side boards, a set of draws, the side of cupboard doors... Crazy. Although, after seeing it I am now totally convinced the sleeves are not a lay up off a mould or rubber. I say this because, if you we're to take a pull off any of these the pattern would be reversed. Yourll be turning male to female or vice versa. I've contacted a leather specialist in London and forwarded a picture of the sleeve. Hopefully he'll be able to identify it. I'll keep ya posted

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

I think you're right. After looking over vinyl fabric samples online, I'm really thinking that this will be the material we end up with for the gray jacket parts. But there are many surface textures available, and when looking at samples online the surface must have been photographed from an offset angle to really show the texture well so that it can be compared to the excellent photos we have of the real jacket texture.

The texture looks to be fine grain/ kid-leather, but there are still many variations even of this. I have found some promising candidates, and have ordered about 10 samples.

I'll also be testing an alternative way to make the red rubber jacket material this weekend.

Brad, please let us know if you'd rather us continue the research aspect of this project in another thread, since this is really supposed to be your jacket build thread.

Here's one of the promising candidates I mentioned above:

And here's a pic for comparison to the real jacket:

In the sample pic, you can really see the texture well, but on some websites that carry this same material almost no texture is visible. It's all in the lighting angle. Even on the real jackets many of us thought all of the gray parts were smooth rubber because the texture can only be seen up close and when the light hits it from a bit of an angle.

When the samples come in, I'll post some pics of them taken at different angles and see if we have something that would be close enough. Hopefully at least one of them would work.

Outstanding. I spent most of last night in a meeting for work and all I could do was look at my portfolio binder and think how good the leather texture would work for a jacket :)

The sample pic above looks great.

Also can't wait to see if your alternate for the rubber works.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

Hard to tell for sure, but that texture looks similar. Not liking the $550 price...

By the way, it seems us BTTF II jacket buffs aren't the only ones in need of rubber arm bellows. They are also used by Lost in Space B9 robot builders.

Go here, and click on "Arms": B9 Rubber Parts

Check out that price. Ouch.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

Price aside, they look good to me, but are they accurate for enough for this jacket?

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

They're too strong to fully collapse, so they would have to be used as a mold.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

I'm making a mould for these. Got access to lathe. Plans are getting draw up. Gonna do an Alu master and take cast off that. 2 part mould, seams will be hidden. 1 under arm and one under the buckle on the outside of the sleeve. If it works i'll palm some off on here.

Awesome. You are this thread's hero.

Is this how that one guy made his "100%" accurate jacket did it? I put that in quotes because there are a few things that are inaccurate.

I don't think he has ever told us how he did his.
