Back to the Future Guitars

Actually, I think it's a Paul Reed Smith clone...I don't believe they released a version with dot inlays until the late 90's, most of their guitars had fancy dragon, trapezoids or other emblems for inlays.

That is a PRS. They weren't exactly the company then they are now. At least reputation wise. But that is a bolt on which I am not sure if they do anymore. It would not be hard to contact PRS to ask what that color was. They might even have some VOS.

Lewis - you did very well finding that Chiquita with the black truss rod cover. Nice one!

So, I picked this up today:

For those wanting to convert you Epi's to a GIbby, i found this site:

Croxguitars Headstock overlays

Ive used it before to convert my epi-es335. also if anyone wants to go all out, i have made a fake sticker to replace the one inside the body. looks just like an old gibson manufacturing sticker to put the model and number on the guitar.

Here are my BTTF guitars in my collection.
Living on the opposite side of the world from the USA its pretty hard and expensive to source these guitars so although they are not 100% screen accurate they are very close and the Chiquita is in mint condition for its age.

This is my ES-355 with Bigsby as stock.
I have now sourced the correct black pick guard which took me a while. I even traveled to the Gibson Factory when in the USA in Memphis to try and buy one but even though they had them out the back and had a shop onsite they wouldn't sell me one.
The headstock logo is incorrect but I had to sacrifice that to get the guitar with Bigsby.
Unfortunately I had overlooked the fact that the screen used one was a stock guitar with Bigsby added later. You live and learn but I'm happy with it and it is my most expensive guitar in my collection.

I also made up a framed display with mini guitar. I had to strip down a white mini guitar and repaint it along with the hardware then make my own pick guard out of an iTunes gift card.
I thought the hardware was gold and the pick ups were silver so painted it this way...
sees there is still debate out there on this???

This is my Chiquita travel guitar.
Still need the black headstock cover....

I mounted it on this framed backboard and attached raised photos on boards plus made a matching pick like used in the movie (half metal and half grey painted).
The guitar can be removed from the frame as I used the end of a guitar strap to hold it on at the bottom and a simple L screw in bracket at the headstock.

This is the before shot when I got it:

I had to change out the pickguard surround and find the scalloped volume dial in black.

This is the after shot:
IMG_6073_zps442e6d3f.jpg

here are a couple more shots showing the headstock. I noticed in the movie it appears that the screen used Chiquita doesn't have the string info printed on the back of the headstock.

Looks great. I finally pulled the trigger on a guitar—an Epiphone 335 PRO. It's a bit nicer and closer to the 345 than the base 335 Dot, as it has pearl inlays in the neck (they are rectangles as opposed to the 345's split parallelograms, but they still look more accurate than the simple dots). Also, it has binding on the neck and the jack on the front face like the 345. It's still missing the extra varitone dial of the 345, but oh well. Here's a pic:

It will need a Bigbsy vibrato added, but that's easy. You can buy a $200 Bigsby B7 (original style Bigbsy made in the USA) or one that looks 90% the same—the Bigsby B70, which is what Bigsby calls the "licensed" (AKA made overseas) version of the B7, for about $100. Since my guitar will be a $500 Epiphone vs. a vintage or re-issue Gibson, I'll opt for the B70.

For those looking to buy a guitar more as a prop, there is an ultra low-cost version out there that can be used as a starting point: an Oscar Schmidt (by Washburn) OE30 Delta King. They can be had on Ebay for LESS THAN $200. Though the quality control on these low end guitars is all over the place, most agree that they even play fine, even great, if you are willing to pay a little more than average to have it set up by a professional. I almost went that route. Here are the ones available on Ebay:

On their website and in some sellers' stores, they seem to be selling a slightly updated version with a switch near the top...

I'll post pics of my guitar when it gets here. It's supposed to ship out on Friday.

Lastly, was there ever a consensus on the color of the pickups? I could have sworn they were gold, but after studying those pics Renesix posted, some clearly seem to show silver pickups. It actually looks like the 6 screws are gold, but the pickup covers were silver. I can't find any replacement pickups that come that way, though, silver with gold screws, so it's a puzzle. In the pics where the pickups look gold, that could easily be explained by the yellowish tinge being caused by a reflection of the warm yellow overhead lighting.

At any rate, even in the pics where the pickups seem to be silver, the Bigsby on the end looks gold as hell, which is strange because the Bigsby comes in both gold-plate and chrome-plate, and is usually ordered to match the color of the other hardware. This is killing me...

One of the rarest you will find

I am not a PRS expert, but this is probably as close as you can come to the PRS replica from BTTF 2.

The one Marty is seen with is a CE22 I believe, it is a bolt on neck which is PRS's lower end model. This company is very big now but wasn't so much in the 80's. Chances are it wasn't even called the CE22 yet.

But this guy on the mylespaul forum has this CRAZY STUPID RARE PRS for sale and it's the same blue as Marty's.

Finding a CE22 from that year is going to be hard enough, finding one in the same color is gonna be even trickier as I am fairly aware of PRS's methods which seem to be, paint a guitar and send it to a retailer.

p.s. hope you can afford it. I am guessing BTTF2 was filmed in 87/88. Which means Marty's guitar was probably an 86 or 87.

I actually found the exact PRS once, but it was £1,500... So I could not purchase it. I wish I saved the picture, but it was exactly the same guitar. I suppose they made these, but they look to be fairly rare!

I worked guitar center for 6 years. PRS rarely does solid colors. And if they used this color from 85-87 or even until 95 it will still be fairly rare to find, as they probably would not have put it on a lot of guitars. They are so known for doing SO MANY DIFFERENT bursts, trans, and other colors, that you don't see a large number of similar models from the early days.

I am fairly certain this is the same blue. Although this is a neck through or set neck, not sure. Marty's was for sure a bolt on.

Might be the pictures, but looks kinda dark, but yeha it is meant to be an electric blue, and the head of the neck is black... I really did find one before, wish I could have shown you, it was on Gumtree ^^

One like this one!! Only the mics are different, but these can be easily changed >
But the color scheme is exactly like this one:

Apparently the correct model is a '89 PRS CE ALDER 24

Re: One of the rarest you will find

Well the movie was made in 87 or so right? The one I posted is a bit darker but I am wondering about the lighting as well. ^ yours seems pretty close.

Re: One of the rarest you will find

Yeah but it would have had to begun in 87 or 88 right, shooting pre production stuff.

They have stated it took 2 years, 1987-1989 to get writing done and all sets built.
Principal photography began on February 20, 1989.

So if they built sets in the two prior years, they most likely were filling the sets with props too prior to shooting.

My curiosity is that PRS is based in the New England area I thought. The story I know is the bird inlays he now does are a bird local to where the factory is and the fretboard mocks how it dives into the water.

They would have only been in business for a couple of years, and even then they would have been competing with the big dogs, and to get into a movie that ended up being timeless just makes me wonder.
