Back to the Future 1985 Denim Jacket 2018 Update

UPDATE: Due to a member of the BTTF costuming world harassing the winner after I purposely kept her full name out of the discussion to maintain her privacy, I am seriously reconsidering sharing anything further.

The person blocked me on messenger when I asked him about it.

She is not a celebrity and I feel awful that my actions led to her being harassed in this way.

Keeping any further information closed to a few select people I can trust seems to be the only way I can do that.

I’m appalled.

Edited to add: Do NOT harass this the contest winner or the person who harassed her. You can’t fix what he did to the winner by harassing him. I’ve already apologized directly to her over this.

That's terrible that people make decisions to go after people like that. Don't feel like it's your fault though, you just decided to uncover what many of us are very passionate about. Unfortunately there are bad people out there who ruin it for everyone else.

I still feel terribly embarrassed about the whole thing. Some people seem not to have any social skills and forget that this hobby may mean a lot to them but means almost nothing to everyone else.

In order to help minimize potential ability for further doxxing, EmmaInCandyland would you mind deleting those pictures?

I’m trying to get them removed from Reddit too.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

I have received photo proof that the winner received the jacket. I did not receive this image from the winner. So please do not contact her.

I wanted to release this image, but given that the community can’t be trusted not to harass her, I’m opting to protect her privacy here.

The jacket was destroyed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina. Sadly the mystery is solved and that’s where it ends.

As a further reminder: don’t harass the winner. Don’t doxx the winner. Move on.

Sincerily, i truely appreciate the efforts made by Mr Nick Fox regarding the 1984 Guess marciano jacket but if i understood correctly, he made a Reddit post about founding the winner and then deleted it?

How can you complain that people have tried contacting someone that was exposed on a website like Reddit? Especially when the subject is an incredibly rare and iconic piece of vintage screen used clothing that everyone (yes, VERY obsessives collectors) is curious about? In my opinion when you have a piece of information like that, it’s best to keep it to yourself or a very small circle…

It goes without saying, of course it’s completely stupid and irrational to contact a complete stranger out of nowhere and i totally understand how Nick must feel that it makes the community look gross but at the same time i can’t help but feel like that information and the winner’s name could had been kept more private.

I suspect lessons have been learnt here. I’m sure if the people involved could do over, it would be a case that it’s revealed the jacket did in fact make it’s way to the contest winner, here’s a picture of it with their face obscured…and that’s the end of it. Or even just a picture of it would have suffice. The very fact people know there is someone who owns a screenused jacket in their personal collection but has remained private all this time, is proof that you can reveal something but keep the owner secret.

I’d be curious to see the “proof” that the jacket did make its way to the contest winner but of course, if they are in the picture, I can understand why Nick decided to delete evidence of this. I don’t think he could have reasonably predicted some people would react in the way they did (which I’m led to believe was harassing the winner personally by contacting them with insults for losing the jacket or something).

Nothing was exposed on Reddit. People used what I posted on Reddit to reverse engineer the person’s identity and dox them.

Her information has since been traded in private chats and numerous people have reach out demanding she provide details about the jacket no normal person would know or remember, especially 18 years after the jacket was lost.

As a result, the winner has largely stopped answering anyone’s questions.

There is a right way and a wrong way to reach out to a stranger for something like this. And the people who berated, harassed, and interrogated her, trading her information like she was a prop to be collected, 100% did it the wrong way, and ruined it for the rest of us.

And since people can’t be trusted, I now can’t be as open with the information I do have, which is sad but necessary to protect the winner.

I’ve spent 9 years on this research project and a few people who lack decorum and social skills ruined it because they couldn’t wait a week for me to compile and release information and proof.

I never posted any information about her that wasn’t already published 38 years ago in Teen Beat.

Unfortunately my attempts to locate this person were not fruitful, so I needed to broaden my scope.

Without the Reddit post, I would have never made contact with the two people who helped me locate her, but that was done through DMs, no openly on Reddit.

I would have preferred to keep everything totally private until there was a resolution, but that might have meant a year or more of additional work to locate the winner without that outside help.

I have shared the image I have of the winner in the jacket with people I can trust as well as a highly reputable person in the prop collecting world to verify my findings.

For the time being, and without the winner’s consent, I don’t see a way of releasing it safely without making things worse for her.

She was extremely gracious with me, and I feel awful that people were so rude and spammy to her that she became hesitant to talk to anyone.

Can I ask what you mean by harassment? Were they showing up at her house or something?
Primarily they have been reaching out demanding information about jacket details that no one outside this small community would notice or care about and definitely wouldn’t remember all these years later.

They’re demanding pictures, which - due to her losing EVERYTHING in Hurricane Katrina - don’t exist anymore.

They’re claiming she’s lying about having the jacket despite her never seeking publicity for it.

They’re demanding she show them the jacket now like she’s lying about losing her house in Katrina.

They’re acting like animals, basically.

Wow. That’s much much worst than what i thought had happened. I am sorry for my false interpretation. It’s truely sad for the community but at the same time i’m happy to know there is a visual proof that the jacket had found a home!

Congratulations on your research even tho i’m sure those un-educated persons ruined it for you. I hope someday you will feel like sharing that picture but considering the behavior of some people, better to keep it safe for now. i find it f*cking sad that some people are so obsessive that they would DOX a stranger about details of a jacket they know is lost since 2005… a really toxic behavior.

The only thing ruined for me is my view of the community.

I would have loved to send the winner some things (copies of the Teen Beat the contest came from, a replica jacket, etc) to in some small way thank her. But I doubt she’d be willing to send her address to a stranger now despite being open to it initially with me.

I feel worse for her. She didn’t ask for any of this. That’s why unless she overtly consents to the picture being released publicly, it never will be.

I will say though: it’s not a great picture. Haha again, it’s not from her (since she lost her childhood photos in Katrina) so it’s not like I have a Polaroid or 35mm print or something. But it’s enough to tell what it is.

I will put together the full story of the discovery, but will change her name when I do to prevent further attention she didn’t ask for.

That is freakin' awful... Ugh... :(

The reason for the Guess logo being there is because it's unfortunately not a screen used jacket.

As far as I'm concerned, all jackets used in the production of BTTF are long lost. Apparently, one of the jackets (assumed to be one where the jacket and vest are stitched together, for scenes with a lot of movement) is owned by a private collector, although there isn't much information to back it up since they are completely anonymous.

The jacket at the Hollywood Museum is actually owned by another RPF user, jonnytrooper. In terms of details, it seems to be the exact same model used in the film (correct double sectioned waistband, and correct button placement). In terms of sizing I'm not completely sure, but according to the jackets owner he said it's around a youth large or in normal men's sizing, a small to extra small.

Image of the jacket attached:

I hope you had a great time at the Hollywood Museum, it seems really awesome. Thanks for the images, too!
is the board the screen used one ?

That's a very sad episode. I'm so sorry for both of you. Unfortunately the damage is already done. Despite the despicable acts of some mean people, after all your hard work and research, you deserve to share its results with the community. Showing it again (this time omitting the person's face and further information) won't make things worse. The final decision is totally yours and it should be respected. But I'd be a hypocrite if I say I'm not curious to the see the picture.

Put a black square over her face and post the picture.
I’ve shown it to people with the knowledge and/or collections to confirm my finding and they have.

Sadly because some people can’t control themselves, (and I am still dealing with a couple of them) I have still not decided to release anything further.

People’s curiosity is not more important than the winner’s privacy.

Someone on here that can confirm your story? Because so far it’s all talk just like your run of jackets that you stopped replying to.

Sorry I have a day job that keeps me too busy to work on side projects. I would love nothing more than the time to work on those projects, but they take a lot of time, money, and attention. All of which are precious commodities.

Pro-tip: if trying to convince someone to do you a favor in the future, going after them for a perceived failing, not a great move. Lol

You could have still posted some updates or responded to questions on your thread. You have the time now lol

I don’t need a favor lol. You either post it or not, apparently you have all of the control of the proof of what happened to that jacket and it seems like you don’t want to share it.
