AvP Spear thanks to Macguyver!

Well, so far has taken me about 2 hours if that to whip this up, thanks to the work of Macguyver. I need to make the blades for the ends, and a little fine tuning, but otherwise its done, and works like a champ!
Basically I took off 2 legs from a cheapie tripod I had, wrapped the ends with pipe insulating foam, dremmeled some patterns into a 1 1/2" thick pvc pipe, painted it, and then shoved the 2 tripod legs into each end of the pipe. I initially was planning on bolting the 2 legs together, but the fit with the pipe insulation was so tight that there is no need, they are securely in the pipe and wont come out unless i need them to. The 'automated' extension works fantastic, people are amazed and wonder how the hell I did it.....just a quick turn of your wrist and both ends come out very quickly. Truly amazing, and sooo easy! Thanks again Macguyver...you made this part of my project quick and relatively painless! Next up is the backpack/plasmacaster, then redoing my gaunts, then if time allows, redoing my armor, all from last years costume. Here's some pics of the spear so far....its not quite done yet though...

This is the end of the spear closed.....not sure if I am going to stick with the 'blade' that is on there now..got that from a sword from the dollar store, not bad..what do you think? (and yes, the ends will be pointy when I am done..the little 'ball' will be gone)

Here you see the ends of the tripod legs wrapped in pipe insulation, which once I stuff them in the pvc, is in there nice and snug. You can see the bracket on the end of the one tripod I originally was going to use to connect the 2 legs together, but dont need it anymore

Close up of the PVC pipe, dremmeled the patterns on it, sanded it down a bit, painted it with black plasti dip, then sponged it with silver acrylic

thanks guys for the compliments. Now I just have to get motivated to finish the darn thing.

i have a question. How does the extension work? what mechanics r behind it? i would really like to know.
Thnx

well, its really quite simple...its just 2 legs from a regular camera tripod which are what you would call 'telescopic'. There are no mechanics to it really, its simply due to spinning the spear quickly, extends the spear out both ends...once this is done, I still have to close the clips on the legs so that the spear stays open and locked. Unfortunatley, closing the spear does not work like that , you have to actually push both ends back in...although Macguyver did have a solution to that..where you simply hold the spear vertically, which would make the top half close by itself, and then crouch at the same time which would close the bottom half. I will try to do up a quick video clip showing it work...it is really quite simple...yet works great!

Spear is all done! Finally got around to finishing it off...too many projects going all at once! Now onto the backpack....not lookin forward to it! Not sure even where to begin....wish me luck!

I LOVE IT! U GOT IT WORKING GREAT!!! :)

with many thanks to you and your design! Now...if you could hook me up with details on building a backpack..that would rock! Started dealing with that build tonight....I have yet to see anyone build one from scratch (not including sculpts)...so I'm totally on my own ideas for this one. But...I think I may have it solved....did up some templates and should be rockin on wednesday. Thanks again Mac!
