Avengers... Where was War Machine?

They were too busy recasting him?

I haven't seen any but I can lob a few guesses:

-Two powered armor guys on the team would be redundant
-War Machine isn't typically an Avenger (at least not with the same layman familiarity as Cap, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Hawkeye)
-Not over-saturating the film with characters
-Budgetary reasons

He wasn't selected for the Avenger Initative. Everything War Machine brings to the table comes from Stark. Shield needs Tony/Iron Man, but not War Machine so much.

I'm guessing something will be mentioned in Iron Man 3, from a 'world in peril' perspective he should've been there?

A big interplanetary portal with huge skyscraper wreaking aliens ships is pretty hard to miss...

I didn't really "get" war machine anyway.
So Rhodes can wear it without arc reactor planted in the chest?
Should all the suit tailored to Tony (Me and my suit are one, handed over to the government would be.......), which has the arc reactor which drives the unibeam.
Moreover, WM is based on Mk2, should it be using paladium, which will be degraded over time (not to mention killing the wearer)?

In the Avenger, I see no US military involvement? Everything is SHIELD, even the nuke is coming from the flying fortress. The only government involvement that I see (if I remember it right) was the police officer trying to blokade some blocks in the city.
So no wonder WM was not involved.

I agree that he wasn't/needed selected for the Avengers Initiavtive.

IMIM2 brings up a good point because Rhodie just snatched that suit from display a through it on without an arc reactor

My reasoning was that they didn't want to bring in too many elements from Iron Man II into the Avengers.

I would have figured in universe that the military had him off doing something else with the suit if he even has possession of it.

My guess is there were too many characters already. Why put War Machine in and take away from the other characters to give him more screen time, or barely give him any at all in which case why bother at all? I like the idea that he's elsewhere in the world using the suit.

As I understand it, all the suits have backup power units. Jarvis even tells tony this in the first movie against Iron Monger when his arc reactor almost runs out of power. My guess is that with the upgraded suits and arc reactor, Tony would upgrade the backups as they wouldn't be powerful enough to run the newer suits. So with these upgraded backups, who knows how long the suits could run.

Black Widow makes a comment about this in Iron Man 2. When Nick Fury is talking to Stark about what happened, she mentions the suits are somehow set up for an individual to use them, implying the suit was made for Rhodes all along.

Seeing as how he doesnt need an arc reactor implanted in his chest as Tony does, I'm sure the arc reactor is just part of the suit in the War Machine version. If that arc reactor is paladium based, it is not embedded in his chest, therefore does not contaminate him.

to take it a step farther. Since this is the Marvel universe, why wouldnt the x-men, the fantastic 4, and the other NY based superheros show up to help?
