Avengers Movie Captain America Project

looking fabulous!

On the padded fabric pieces (like along the abdomen area)... how do you do that? Is it just sandwiching something like foam in-between two parts of fabric and stitching around them? I've always wondered how they do that. I do a fair amount of sewing, but I've never tried to do this sort of thing.

Goodluck with your suit, it's looking awesome!

Yeah the abdomen is craft foam sandwiched between layers of fabric. I had to drawn up a digital pattern for the abs, so I knew they'd fit me and be more precise.

It's a detail that's easily overlooked, but Cap's stripes aren't parallel lines, they're tapered inward. So had to make sure everything was laid out perfectly before any fabrication was done.

will craft foam hold up to washing?

I have a feeling it'll have to be handwashed. Foam has a habit of warping when heated, so hot water would DEFINITELY be a no-no. Washing machine on cold might not be as bad though. I'd suggest making a small test piece just made to test wash before actually going ahead with it though.

anything new, and how did you make the gloves?
and amazing work by the way best captain america avengers costume I've seen so far

It's been a little while, but I've got some new progress to share. BOOTS!!

Here's the leatherette boot top, glued in place over my Oakley SI boots, cheap elastic straps replaced with nylon webbing, and new red laces put in underneath.

Still need to attach the calf bell section (I'm thinking with Velcro) and paint the base boot red in the appropriate areas.

When finished these should look really close to the originals! :)

I got hold of some Oakley SI gloves on eBay, which aren't what were used in the film as far as I can tell, but look close enough to the real thing, and are the same brand as the boots, so I figure it'll work just fine. They only go as far as the wrist, so you have to make a sleeve extension. I got one made in leatherette hemmed and attached it with Unibond Impact adhesive.

The forearm armour that goes over it is also made from leatherette and all I did was add more stitched details to bring it closer to screen accurate, and add nylon webbing straps with velcro tabs on the ends as a closure.

I've still gotta paint the glove itself red, and add the blue suede palm piece. But when that's all done, I'll definitely take some more pics for you guys to oogle. :p

this looks fantastic. i'm blown away by your ability. someone get this guy a job doing this stuff!

great job on the boots, amazing costume
and does anybody have an idea on what material i should use on the blue for the suit that's not very expensive because I'm on a tight budget

I was wondering if anyone has thought about using ponte fabric? I had bought some, but I was hopping to get some feed back from what you guys think.

Here's the first uploaded pic of my Captain America suit worn today at Kapow Comic Con in London. For some reason the blue looks really light, I think the colour balance on their camera may have been a tad off. :p

I didn't finish the hood/mask in time, or the gloves or belt, but here's what I was able to wear to the con.

More to come.
