Art Asylum / Diamond Select TOS Phaser build with metal parts.

Unfortunately the green lasers are the only ones visible in clear air, the others need smoke or dust t show up.

... considering a build from an Art Asylum and Federation Phaser parts... Had a question. I may be wrong...and understand how the prop was built... but,
I seem to remember when Kirk fires the Phaser 1 he presses the bar behind the silver aspirator with his thumb ? That bar was the trigger, at least to the actors... I think. Am I remembering incorrectly?
tried to find video of different people using it. Most images show the forefinger extended so it could not press the button on the bottom... any thoughts?

In retrospect I think that when pressing the lower button with your index finger your thumb naturally also presses into that bar as well. I used to think that bar was the activator for decades.

I also thought the next gen phasers operated the same way!
Thanks for the reply.

Anyone know if all the functions of the art asylum still work when the federation parts are installed?
What is the best base phaser to start with?

Take a look at "Return Of The Archons", and see how the P1s are operated. Kirk and Spock always have their fingers on the bottom button when firing.

...well ok... I trust Kirk...Spock I'm not too sure of! ; )

I scratch built a Phaser and communicator from watching reruns in the 70s. Built from Pine wood and made my own "filler" wood putty from saw dust and glue. Bottle caps and tubes. They look surprisingly good even today, not sure of the scaling.
Time for a better version I think.
I hope to follow you guy's leads and advise.

Kpax the p1 still works the same with the new parts. The side dial on the p2 needs to be adjusted if you still want to turn the LED on the p2 on and off. Other than that the rest of the metal parts work nice.

Great thanks!

Is the Art Asylum and Diamond Select-Diamond Comics the same product? What is the best base to start with? Looking for the best base material/plastic etc.

Anyone ever try to upgrade the asporator lifter to a 1/4 round acrylic rod? or something close? Also any upgrade to the numbered wheel?

Anyone know why the grip is considered to be a dark bronze color rather than black-ish/ the same color as the P1? Are there better reference images out there?

It makes more sence..at least to me...that the P1 and grip would be the same, from a "real" product point of view. 3 differnt colors seem unnecessary.

I've studied maybe a thousand photos & screen caps, it's definitely dark bronze with a hint of metallic charcoal. Trek Prop Zone or Memory Alpha are great places for phaser research.

I guess the screen caps are better for "as seen or intended" rather than the stills of the prop off screen as the "filmed" colors are different that what the actual paint chip may be?

Actually when you know it's not truly black, you can see the real colour when you watch it on DVD or BR. You'd just assume it's black if you weren't really studying it.
This picture is a little washed out, but you can clearly make out that it's not black here.

Kpax the Art Asylum version shown here is the first release box made back in 2003. The Diamond phaser came out later but it is basically the same phaser. The only difference that I can tell is the original 2003 phaser body color is gray and the new Diamond phaser body looks more on the blue side. If your a collector you may want the rarer eleven year old out of print Art Asylum first edition box.

Well, in the end it shouldn't matter if you're in for the long haul as you'll be painting 100% of it anyway, right?

I agree Chris, when this phaser is painted you will never know that it was a 2003 Art Asylum first edition phaser.

This screw should hold it together;)
