Are there any free fonts out there that are not copyrighted?

I want to save an illustrator file with writing on it as a pdf, but the fonts I have are copy righted and won't let me save.

If I save my prop design schematics as a png, will it retain the to-scale diagrams I draw in illustrator?

Pretty sure I've tried nearly all in my font folder. From 'Arial' to 'Year Supply of Fairy Cakes.'

I don't care what it looks like so long as it's readable, has punctuation, and can be saved from an ai to a pdf.

wow, didn't hear of that one before.....:confused

what if you change the text to vector outlines, that way they become lines and are no longer fonts

I've never run into such a problem.
Seems odd because Arial is a common font.
Maybe it's the save settings?
Could you turn off editing capabilities or just not imbed the fonts?

Just tried saving a PDF in Illustrator here and it works fine with Arial.

just changed the font to Arial, no dice. I keep getting "unknown error" which was always avoided before by removing the font or saving and printing as an ai file.

I'll try messing with changing the text to vector outlines. Never done that before.

Change the fonts to outlines. Saving as a PDF means you don't have to do that. Fonts are copy written yes, but that's so they are not pirated. The nature of a font dictates that it be used freely by the rightful owner of that copy. It's a font. A visual tool. Your settings are mucked up. Go into your preferences in Illustrator and you should be able to fix it. There may be a problem with your permissions. There's no way to tell with the info we have, but it's your save settings.
Laffo.

I changed them all to outlines and it worked like a charm.

Thanks everyone!

Picking up on a tangent, how exactly do (or even CAN) they stop the piracy of fonts? It's not like they require a serial number to activate. Do the owners simply keep an eye out for unauthorized commercial usage and cross-reference against customers?

Seems like out of everything to enforce, font piracy would be the most difficult.

Awww, just a tad too slow to reply about that "outline" trick ;)

To prevent any mistakes happening when outsourcing stuff to print (i.e. all high quality prints) I always convert text into outlines/curves. Makes life that much easier without worrying about having to include all the fonts or someone "accidentally" replacing the font you specified for your artwork :unsure
