Anyone Scratchbuild a Mal Reynolds Pistol?

can anyone think of any other areas to measure
as i have measured lots and dont know if i missed anything

Nothing comes to mind. I mean, we should be able to extrapolate what we need based on the numbers you gave us. This is a big help, thanks!

no problem by the way the barrel opening is just over 9 mil
post some more in progress pics as you build buddy

happy building :)

I started one about three years ago. The barrel is the only portion that has been machined, the rest was hand shaped with metal files and a dremel. I haven't finished it at the moment. Here are a few pics with one of phil's resin casts for reference:

Suh-WEET!!
I toyed with the idea of doing a build like that and totally wimped out.
The availability of the Sidkit was the final nail in my project's coffin.
I did make my own magazines, tho'.

I use .30 caliber Carbine ammo to stand in for Mal pistol ammo.
I know the production staff of the BDM Serenity stuck a .38 Special in theirs,
but a rimmed round wouldn't feed out of that mag too well.
Also, the .30 M-1 Carbine round makes for a reasonable 6 round capacity for the Mal pistol.
Any less ammo capacity than that, and you gotta wonder the value of carrying such a large pistol.

The guys building the whole pistol are really accomplishing something.
I have access to a vertical mill (Bridgeport) which makes everything easier.
I had to make a 3-piece fixture to bend the feed lips on the mags.
I want to display the gun, 2 spare mags, a cleaning rod and 24 rounds of ammo
in a green velvet lined presentation box.
My bending fixture didn't work quite like I planned,
but fortunately these are static display and not for a working weapon.
All the work on the scrolls was hand file work.
I put a 1/4" dowel pin through the hole and located off the flat.
That way, all the filing is done on both pieces simultaneously so that both pieces are the same when you are done.
After I finished the scrolls, I cut a piece of dense, kneeling pad foam to simulate the mag follower.
I "loaded" three rounds of live M-1 Carbine, FMJ ammo for the photo.
The final touch will be to drill and tap the bottom for two 2-56 button-head-socket-cap-screws.

I bought a cheap injection molded copy off ebay and have been working on getting smoothed out and as accurate as I can because I have it cast in bronze.

Does anyone have any tips to finding someone with a means to melt some scrap bronze and pour it in to a sand casting? I live in Washington DC, if anyone have and connections in the general area. I have been having a really hard time finding any info of this and I would love to talk to some people about pricing it out

Thanks

All of these builds look really great guys. My hats off to all of you, and I look forward to seeing more pictures, and reading more on the construction. I still have yet to scratch build anything, and these threads really inspire me! :)

I've got the majority of the gun put together but something just occurred, how do I get a decent brass look, what kind of paint would be best. :confused

Sorry to necro this ancient but awesome thread, but does anyone have a measurement of the maximum width from side to side?

Since my last post, I've acquired the QMx replica of the Serenity pistol. Comparing it to photos of the screen-used props, it seems that there are some pretty severe differences. Some sources have been saying that the QMx model was a cast of the rubber stunt gun, cast from one of the "actual" props.

I am interested in doing two things: making some modifications to my QMx replica to fix some of the more glaring inaccuracies (adding wood grips that are faired smoothly to the center section of the handle, for instance), and machining/constructing an aluminum version of the gun (Show version rather than Serenity version).

Has anyone dismantled the QMx replica? I took one of the (junk) setscrews (which should be socket head cap screws) out of the handle and discovered it didn't hold anything anywhere. I suspect there is a lot of glue involved, but I want to take some measurements and lots of pictures before I hack it up too much.

Is is possible for you to post some high res photos of it? The more the better. I would love to see it for my self.

Someone has compiled a pretty amazing set of pictures of the movie version of the prop:
Index of /Firefly/guns

I will definitely be posting some high res pictures of the QMx replica when I take them. I also will be doing some fully dimensioned drawings, which I've been having a lot of trouble finding- there are some partially dimensioned drawings online, but very few of them have good measurements for the features on the right side of the gun.
