Any famous folks in your family tree?

Andy Lau is my second cousin, once removed. Only met him a handful of times. Last time was backstage when he was doing a concert in Vancouver in 2003. Apparently, he's been in talks to be in Iron Man 3 as a scientist. Andy Lau - IMDb

Love this thread! So many cool connections.

On my Dad's Mom's side is Matthew Thornton, last signer of the Declaration of Independence. She was a direct descendant as her maiden name was Thornton. Pretty interesting dude; Matthew Thornton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (I'm also pretty certain we're related to Billy Bob, but haven't confirmed that yet.)

On my Dad's Dad's side is John Long Routt, the last territorial and first state governor of Colorado. He was appointed by Grant. He was also a pioneer for women's right to vote, and his wife was the first woman registered to do so. When I first saw his pic, it freaked me out. He looked so much like my Grandpa and uncle. His date of death was also the date of my brother's birth. I've visited Routt County, CO. It was cool to see my name everywhere. Another interesting dude; John L. Routt Governor Colorado

Also, my Dad is a cousin of Ronnie Sue Blakley. She was the mom in the original "Nightmare on Elm Street"; Ronee Blakley - IMDb

I'm distantly related to Henry VIII of England and his family, including the rather lesser well known Henry VII, (his father), and Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I (Henry VIII's children). The connection comes through Mary Tudor, from what we know; Henry VIII's sister and the Virgin Queen's aunt.

Also, apparently Nathan Hale's commanding officer. Hale was the guy who said, "I regret that I have but one life to give for my country" during the American Revolution.

Apparently I am distantly related to Evil Kneival...

As a relative you should get the name right -- Evel Knievel. :p
He was so huge when I was a kid, a true one of a kind!

Interesting stuff guys! Keep 'em coming! :thumbsup

Kind of OT but I've always wanted to do my family tree but being that we don't talk all that often, it's kind of difficult. Are any of those websites like ancestry.ca any good? I'd love to find out if I had any famous ancestors lol.

I've traced mine back using ancestry.com. Over the last 2 years I've gone back to 1320. And have over 450 members in my tree. That's just in the direct lines. If I branched out to each and every sibling of my ancestors and their decendants it would be a ridiculous number. I find ancestry .com very useful and it speeds things up but if you want to dig deeper you have to look at parish records and dig a little deeper. Reading this just discovered I have something in common with Gdafi.

I know from personal experience Ancestery.com work well, with the paid search(I forget the exact amount). 1 of my ex's dad paid for the search on my family and was able to trace our history all the way to about the 12th century.

This guy...

... though distantly, as he never had any offspring...

My mom did a bunch of genealogy stuff for her side of the family a few years ago (for a family reunion). If you're interested in actually doing some digging and not just browsing on Ancestery, the LDS libraries have a wealth of information (and no you don't have to be a member of the church, lord knows we're not)

I'd really love to take a look into my own ancestry... though it would be more complicated to do so as I was adopted. I know my biological mother's name and where she lived when I was born so I have a starting point. I'm just not sure I want to open that can of worms.
