Ant-Man (Post-release)

Mass and weight are not the same things.

An astronaut on the moon will only have 1/8th of his original weight, but still retains all of his mass.

They can jump higher, but if they are running it is just as hard for that mass to come to a stop as it would be on earth.

I tough so too, otherwise the train would have actually damage Yellow Jacket, and Ant Man wouldn't of made a dent on the car when he fell from the building at his small size. But then also, Daren wouldn't of been able to pick up the shrunken lamb with 2 fingers. In the movie they say the particle reduces the space between the atoms, which I would think in real life logic it wouldn't decrease mass, but it the movie it seems to go both ways.

I loved this movie, but yeah... apparently the people writing this one didn't even follow the rules of their own story. The tank should have weighed a lot and the Thomas train shouldn't have weighed enough to crush the car. I guess the ant stayed its proper weight though since an ant that big wouldn't be able to walk....

This movie didn't take place on the moon... how does that even make sense.
As I understood it, the whole idea was the Pym particle closed the space between the atoms of everything it shrinks. Basically proportionately compressing the object. Weight should be the same since you're not taking anything away as they shrink. Hence his tiny body cracked the ceramic tile when he landed.

In short, the science of this movie wasn't consistent... but who cares. It was fun to watch.

My wife even liked this one and she's not into a lot of these movies like my kids and I are.

And yes, I'd say it was better than Avengers 2.

Loved the scene at the Upstate NY Avengers HQ

Really cool. They're doing good with the lead in to Civil War. Sokovia seems to be their 'Stamford incident', and stuff like this is reminiscent of the Frontlines book about media in Civil War

Couple of questions when it comes to the tank:
- It had fuel this whole time? Or did Pym somehow use ants to refuel it.
- Would the damage it could cause with the cannon increase in it's micro size?

(Heck Hydra could use the shrink stuff they stole to shrink nukes or anything they want to steal / use.)

I'm surprised that the bad guy was angry that the stuff he was making didn't work the first time. Its a scary weapon if its broken and blobs organic material.

Okay, having finally seen it last night, I noticed a few things, partly what people were commenting on here...

So there was the montage of Hank learning how to use the suit, go small than big while fighting or going through doors, etc... Than Darren puts on the yellow jacket and is a freaking pro in 10 seconds. Knows how to use all the weapons, fly and maneuver like a jet plane.

Aside from what folks mentioned of how he designed the suit and most likely wore it and practiced in it full-size... In all their fights, I saw Scott using his shrinking to tactical advantage for maximum effect. I saw Darren only shrinking in reaction to Scott, following him to one scale or the other. And what's this "maneuvering like a jet plane"? I saw him fly and/or hover from point A to point B a few times, but mostly his tactic was "stand there shooting lasers".

I loved the new female Wasp suit too, although I don't like the idea of a sleeveless fighting suit. Oh well, guess Hawkeye won't be the only one with the female sleeveless outfit anymore!
Welll I hope they cover up her arms and neck, otherwise the suit isn't going to work (or rather the Pym particles).

Dialogue is important. Hank told Hope it wasn't finished. There ya go.

On my negatives list is the inconsistent or downright bad science, more than any other Marvel movie so far (my main quibble there being Mjollnir's incorrect portrayal). If Scott retained his mass while shrunk, no way he could have ridden any ant. And if his mass were reduced, yeah thanks to muscle cross-section he'd have a much greater strength-to-weight ratio than when full-size, but not nearly as much applicable force as full-size, no matter how concentrated. And for the same reason, Fido would have collapsed under its own weight. The reason why Them and Attack of the 50-Foot Woman wouldn't work. That's one area where they needed to have done a bit more figuring-out and a teensy bit less hand-waving. I can take Vibranium and replulsors and the arc reactor and the Super-Soldier Serum and such for what they are, but the Pym Particles needed even one line to the effect of "they compress or enlarge both your mass and volume, but for some reason when they're active, your strength is amplified somehow, though I was never able to figure out why". After all, the same process brings us Giant Man, who can lift tons, so it isn't about retaining the same mass and strength as when you're normal-sized.

Apart from that, it was brilliant. I really hope we see the entire crew back in the future. I agree with everyone saying Luis practically stole the show. I like the implications that Hank is (or at least was, when Janet was still around) an abuser. Hope thinks he killed her (mainly subtext in the film, but it's there, and more explicitly so in the tie-in comic), and to have reached that decision as a seven-year-old, there had to have been a pattern of abuse already going on. Recent research has shown PTSD sufferers (not those who have full-on meltdowns, but the ones who slip past seemingly normal) have trouble with relating to others, especially those close to them, an increased occurrence of substance abuse, and -- interestingly -- a strong desire, almost compulsion, to help people. Hank and Howard are two of a kind. Wonder what they went through early on...

I'm still trying to figure out who that underground journalist was referring to with "one who jumps, one who swings, one who climbs walls..." One is Spidey, yes, but the other two...?

Climbs walls maybe black panther? After a we do see him climbing a wall in the civil war pictures

another question. How does ant man grow? The blue fluid in the movie makes things grow. Is that in his suit too? He puts the blue disk in his regulator to come back from being sub atomic.

Saw it this weekend and REALLY enjoyed it. A few thoughts.

1. The anti-aging stuff was really, really good. I was stunned, especially in comparison to only a few years ago with Tron Legacy, where there was always an "uncanny valley" effect. This one was barely noticeable. I mean, it helps that Michael Douglas is in pretty good shape, but still. Very impressive stuff.

2. I really enjoyed how...small the movie was, if you will. By that I mean it was a very self-contained story. Yes, it was a "fate of the world" film, but it was so much more straightforward than many of the recent films have been. I loved Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it was fairly complicated due to all the espionage, double-dealing, and multiple superpowered characters. Great, great film, but more complicated. This one felt like just a straight-up film. It didn't leave me wanting more, exactly, but it left me looking forward to more, if that makes sense. Mostly, though, it just felt appropriately paced. It didn't feel like there was too much going on, too many plot threads to squeeze in, etc. I enjoyed Age of Ultron, but I found it to be...too busy at times. There were so many plot threads that you just couldn't weave them all together effectively. More on that in a bit, though.

3. The science was inconsistent and doesn't really make sense...but I didn't really care. Man, it was FUN when I figured out (before they showed it) that the tank...was a tank!! And the ant-dog and Thomas the Tank Engine were just fun and funny.

4. Never name your ant. As soon as Antony got a name, I knew he was a goner. I'm guessing Pym figured that out a long time ago.

5. Loved the hints for a second film, with the quantum realm and Wasp possibly still being in there. I don't expect the science will make a lick of sense there, either, but whatever.

6. I now think that Marvel's big "team-up" films need to be even more plot/action-driven. Not necessarily convoluted, but the heavy character lifting should be taking place in the individual character films -- even if that means the films feature more characters. The longer the MCU exists, the more characters they'll be having to squeeze in to a film. I mean, think about what the Infinity War stuff is gonna be like. You'll have all the Avengers (including the "B-team"), all the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, the Inhumans, probably Spider-Man...I mean, even spread over two movies, there just won't be enough time to give everyone character moments and have their own plot thread. If you thought Age of Ultron was "too busy" (as I did, even though I enjoyed it), the Infinity War stuff is just going to be insane. That's why, the way I see it, the other movies should really start to build towards Infinity War. By that, I mean the stories of the individual films need to start building towards that and shifting focus towards the plot point of those stories, and not just the after-credits sequences.

It didn't leave me wanting more, exactly, but it left me looking forward to more, if that makes sense.
I just recently figured that out, too. Marvel Studios have revived an evolved version of what got people back to the cinema every Saturday morning to see what happened next in Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon. It's a serial. Which is at the very heart of making a successful comic book. The mid- and/or after-credit scenes are the cinematic equivalent of "coming next issue".

Think about what the Infinity War stuff is gonna be like. You'll have all the Avengers (including the "B-team"), all the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, the Inhumans, probably Spider-Man...

Don't forget the Asgardians and probably the Celestials, probably the Nova Corps, maybe even all of the Kree military, not just Captain Marvel... I am so angry at the whole Fox mess keeping Galactus and the Silver Surfer out of the fight. And Mattel for having kept Rom sidelined all these years.

Also, I feel like I'm in a minority of liking AoU a lot. It didn't feel too cluttered to me. As with the first one, the character development was minimal and confined to the characters who didn't have their own movie series (Natasha and Clint, primarily). I expect once the extended cut is released, it'll flow a lot more smoothly.

You can clearly see hanks wife the original wasp as Scott shrinks between the molecules. You can even clearly see an arm in one of the pictures
