ANOVOS issues (ANOVOS ONLY discussion)

I am super happy to report that Jasco paint remover works wonders on the Anovos. I wasn’t sure how it would handle the 2K clear coat but it is cutting right through it down to the primer.

It will take a few passes but I am confident this method will be vastly superior than simply sanding it.

Before any of you freak out like the people in the FB groups, this helmet will be fully stripped and painted with the proper Alumaluster finish. Believe it or not.. I have been doing this for a while. I know what I’m doing.:lol::lol:

Alright, now that I have a few free minutes to type I wanted to explain a little more. So first off, DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible for any damage you do to your helmet. USE COMMON SENSE. If you are not comfortable or handy with paint work, send it to someone who is! If this post is not relevant to you.. feel free to skip it.

With that out of the way, I can tell you a few things learned from this helmet. The cast is composed of:

Darker gray polyester gel coat.
Lighter gray 2K filler primer.
Matte/Satin Black base coat, possibly catalyzed. Seems solvent resistant.
2K clear.
Metallic paint.
2K clear.
Weathering

On this helmet, ALL I removed was the coats ABOVE the filler primer. The matte black provided a good barrier so the black and filler primer were not affected by the Jasco. I never let the Jasco touch the gel coat directly. It says it isn’t great for fiberglass and I didn’t want to risk it.

I applied the Jasco, waited about 25-30 minutes, and then used a dull metal scraper to remove the majority of the clear coat. A stiff bristle brush was used to the rest. It was then washed several times with soap and water. I am just now doing a little sanding on any small spots that were not removed with 320 grit, but the helmet is nice and clean and completely smooth.. I will work on it a little more in the coming weeks and post up some photos of the primed “raw” cast for reference.

Has anyone received shipping notification for the Royal Guard helmet? Anovos website shows its shipping now but I live in LA and usually get shipments immediately. I saw on FB that one was received already in Singapore, which is odd if they’re shipping from the US. I also noticed that inside the box there was no artwork. I’m not mad about that since It would make me more comfortable with discarding the box rather than adding it to my massive collection of shipping boxes. :)

Somebody posted they got one in Singapore... i was stunned one actually shipped...

Edit... just noted you mentioned that...

Looks like ANOVOS added a paint disclaimer to their product page:

*PAINT DISCLAIMER:
Please note, since these are handcrafted products we cannot guarantee that the finish of the ordered product will be exactly as pictured. Imperfections or variations in the weathering, clear coat, color coat, or sheen of the product may occur organically due to the nature of the hand-painted finishes. In addition, variations in distressed finishes such as faux dirt and faux aging may differ in color and application. As a result, these characteristics are not viewed as damages or defects. Please note that images of products displayed on the website may differ in color due to differences in resolution, color settings, and brightness of computer monitors.

Which is funny, because they also sent out a marketing email stating the following:
"Like Legacy’s original approach, we use a laborious multi-staged process to get the finish just right. One misstep along the way and a helmet must be completely stripped and painted again. We take a lot of pride in the result, but the true magic that ties the helmet together is the weathering."

So for those of you who are still waiting on yours, be careful! They are now going to claim that fingerprints under the clearcoat are not defects/faults. I am pretty sure they added the disclaimer because per their marketing email they realized they shot themselves in their own foot. Since if you were to receive a helmet that was in a similar condition to mine, per their (ANOVOS') own words, the whole thing would have to be stripped and repainted...

This is a really scummy move on their part. But keep in mind that that disclaimer was not added until recently. So do NOT let them fool you that this applies to your order, assuming you placed it before they updated their product page.

I am sure the Anovos warehouse is extremely busy at the moment so that is probably the delay on the Royal Guard. Have you seen all the Q3 stuff they are trying to get out and only a couple weeks left in the quarter, LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you confused on the quarters? Q3 is July - September.

Do I really expect them to start delivering all of those Q3 products in Q3? Nope, not anywhere near all of those. They have never delivered that many different items in a quarter.

Wait a sec...hold on.

Fingerprints are..not imperfections?

You pay 649 US for a helmet..and you find the finish on it is marred and this is acceptable to them?

I get the want to have something perfect and going through the trouble, time AN EXTRA COST to have something perfect, but for 649 bucks, Id expect the product to come with all the care and love in the world going into its production.

This is insanity. Ive bore witness to 3D prints with better finish and paint jobs than this. For a fraction of the cost too.

Totally: There are red flags everywhere, wall to wall, about ordering anything from this "company."

I don't get it.

You are dating a diseased model who doesn't eat, is addicted to heroin, and spends your money to keep doing it. She doesn't shower. She passes out, sometimes without vomiting, not always, before you even undress for bed.

She doesn't care about you.

But you say, "ooooh, but she's so hot."

I don't see where it says fingerprints are fine. It says "Imperfections or variations". This whole statement is pretty vague and subject to interpretation. I don't think it means they can ship an item with significant flaws. Even something as specific as fingerprints could be very different as far as how noticable they are.

We have seen examples in this thread where photos of the exact same helmet look like very different colors depending on how the photos were taken.

I think the statement is just legalese to say the finish is expected to be a little different on each helmet and it is intended to look distressed. The weathering is supposed to make the helmet look distressed to some degree. But there can still be issues that go beyond the desired amount of distressing and weathering. I don't see this as an out to ship products that have obvious unintended flaws and the customer can't do anything about it.

I still find it suspicious that this notice came out just after a few people got helmets with fingerprints on them and as of today no one that has complained about them in this thread has heard back on what Anovos is going to do about it other than they are investigating, what the frack is there to investigate, send out a new helmet already without having the customer sending the bad one back first.

As promised, here are a few photos of the “raw” Anovos Mandalorian. I still need to go in and do some detail sanding and smoothing here and there, but this is essentially what you’ll get after stripping the paint. The ear stripes are still incredibly shallow which is unfortunate. I’ve still got to fill the “thumb print” indent in the left ear cap so don’t mind that either.
