Another Apollo project - LLRV 1/18 scale

It's been a while, joberg : ) How's it going? Yeah hopefully this puppy's going to see the light soon. The real thing went from planning to first flight in less than 2 years. Just a model and I've been at it for 8. I should round it out to a full decade, lol : )

Outstanding project. it doesn't matter how long a project takes to complete. The real enjoyment is the deep dive and learning all the details that go into making our desired object. That is why so many of us jump straight into something new as soon as we finish. I personally am loving watching this project.

Going crackerjazz, going;-) Your project is something that I watched eagerly! Not only for your dedication & research, but also for your ability to produce/build, from scratch, the intricacies of the minute details of that vehicle. It's a lesson in model building that I try to replicate in my work since, to me, you're one of the few here having put the "Scratch-Build Bar" on a high ceiling:)

This looks fantastic. Any chance you might release the files? I would love to make another at some point for my man cave. Here is a photo of me working on the brass frame for the ones in the HBO Earth to the Moon show. Made at a small shop in L.A. called Vision Crew. Cheers!

Thanks for that pic...what was the scale agreed upon for that show?

Hi Mike, probably in kit form : ) but only in 1/18 (15 in. long) or even 1/24 (11 in.). 1/6 is huge! That is some amazing creation. How many did you build for the show? I've seen some Edwards AFB pics of your model with the figure on display right next to the LLRV.

Thanks for the kind words, Joberg, I was thinking the exact same thing about your builds : )

Thanks! We made two. I learned A LOT about silver soldering brass on that project. I gotta get to Edwards. I still haven't had a chance to see it on display. Well, I'm interested in a kit when they become available. Any scale. Cheers!

Sure thing! : ) My biggest worry is that the thing warps under load on its 3D-printed spindly legs, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Worked on the 1/24 scale gimbal frame. I thought I could print it in one piece but realized I won't be able to print the rivets pointing downwards so I had to split it into top and bottom pieces. I then saw that it wouldn't fit in the build plate so I had to split it further. I just made sure the joints of the top pieces don't line up with the joints of the bottom pieces so that all the breaks are supported when test fitting the parts.

Thanks, guys! : )

I couldn't fit the 1/18 legs on the build plate when I tried printing them last time and I had to cut across some trusses but 1/24 does fit nicely on the plate when I measured.

The front legs are easier to break free as a single printable section.

6
The rear legs were a bit trickier where the trusses of the rear electronics tray cross with the trusses of the legs so I had to split them somewhere.

Will be breaking down the rear tray further but this is how the main parts of the frame will go together pretty much.

They're pics of the same leg : ) Still have to do the other three.

Some progress shots:

I tried out a different orientation to try to eliminate some ridges on the tubes caused by the supports. The ridges look like the pointed tops of tents and they happen on the rods which are more horizontal or have a shallower angle. I think when the support rod wicks the resin and the resin stays on top of the layer that's curing it gets cured as well. I had to sand them down.

Had some issues with the wavy ridges from the supports on the tubes that are near horizontal. Was trying to see if I can use a sacrificial tab where supports can connect to that can just be snapped off clean.

Still needs sanding but easier than sanding down the ridges from supports.

This is in 1/24 scale, by the way. Haven't gotten back to the 1/18 yet.
