ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

ugh thats so frustrating. ........hm...... you wouldn't be able to ...like.....sacrifice a couple mm of length to bring the butt up to the height of the hex and then start over shaping the bevels?

And I considered recruiting the barrel a bit as well, though I don't have a lathe to cleanly to a job like that.

As for aligning it, that part just had to be done by eye and with a lot of sweating. At first glance it DOES look good, don't get me wrong! It's just my inner OCD that is really kicking myself for not getting it perfect, which sucks for different reasons.

Maybe if I had another $600 I'd buy a second FM C96 just to try this again and get it PERFECT, though obviously that's no option haha

Filing the mauser upper angles could do it too but then you loose the engraving on top.

Shortening the barrel wont hurt the build.

I didn't think of the engravings!
shortening wouldn't hurt, except of what I meant for how he "aligned" the bevels with the mauser. shortening the barrel means that when threading it, it will not end in the same orientation if that makes sense.

I totally get that you might feel frustrated, but this is already a really nice job and the best might be to leave it as is :)

Maybe if I had a lathe I'd give that a try too, though I'd rather not mess with my parts and risk messing anything up beyond repair if I could help it. As is, I'll maybe experiment with some metal weld but otherwise mostly just leave it alone. The only other thing that would work would be to have somebody weld the unthreaded bull barrel's bevels and re-cut them entirely.

Maybe if I could also find a secondhand Todd's Bull Barrel I could just use that one instead; his older barrels had shallower bevels and no side bevels at all.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the real Hero prop had wonky bevels too haha

You just keep flattening the rear until it snugs to the correct alignment,

Then file the bevels to match the profile of the upper.

What you are suggesting is much harder than what I would do.

Really easy to just scribe a line and grind flat. Go slow.

Grind flat with what? I really don't own a lathe to easily turn away material at a measured point, and I don't have an angle grinder or the like.

Most of my work is done with needle files and impromptu workarounds, and even then working on steel is tough.

just thought that the bull barrel has the threads pocking out of the end, no way to file the barrel shorter.

you did a really awesome job with the tools you have, so much could have gone wrong and you have a very clean result (y)

I think eethan is right, making it a bit shorter would change where the threads inside exit the bull barrel! dang..

Omg, duh, theres a threaded MALE end on the bull barrel. yea, you'd need a lathe for that. Scottjua might be able to help, or Dann

I still have plans to get this sent to Scott eventually, but that was mostly so he could add the appropriate stamps to the upper and lower. Mayhaps he could turn the back of the barrel slightly, though it would have to be a specific length to compensate for the additional turn the barrel would need to be tight again so the bevels would line up.

I had actually asked Scott if he could possibly manage to install a TC barrel on FM's steel C96 himself, although he told me he did not think he could. This was largely why I decided to tackle it myself.

Unless this is a live fire you can file to the edge just fine.

IF you dont want to do the grinding and not live fire and you don't intend on ever taking the barrel off.

Grind out the threading on the upper. Use epoxy weld to recenter the barrel where you want it. As the epoxy starts to harden you can make adjustments to align perfectly.

You could shim to center the barrel
