ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

I'll also point out the lower frame is silver under the grill greeblie that popped off, adding weight to the idea of doo-dads pulling off paint or blueing

i take that back.. thats the edge of the mount bar. Still missing the upper grill section!

I don't think the upper grill section is actually missing - I think it's much more likely to be a trick of the light, especially based on what we know.

Of course I could be wrong about this, but I don't think that the Star Wars prop team would really bother replacing a small section of the grill that happened to fall off during production, especially since they didn't with the barrel greeblies, mystery disc etc. It just doesn't strike me as "important" enough to bother spending time on.

Also the entire grill is present on the blaster's post production photos, after all, so the chances arethat it remained that way during filming :)

Chris,

This is a wonderful discovery, something all of us trying to research this prop have been wondering for years, as have you of course.
But this has been nagging at me ever since you posted this..haha. Considering that's a clearer version of the top-view chronicles photo, is there any clearer view of the Barrel Greeblie by any chance?

Going over reference for this blaster the other day, I noticed a small detail that everyone seems to have missed.
The two thumb nuts are STRAIGHT knurled, not diamond knurled. It appears that every single replica missed this from Master Replicas to the new movies.
I'm guessing that after MR did diamond knurl everyone else assumed they knew what was correct and copied it.
Not sure how MR missed it.

Dave at Dark Energy said he's in the middle of a run now and could make some with straight knurl.

Little bit of a minor update on this thing! But after doing some hunting around I finally managed to track down the correct 1/2 in.-28 npt tap to thread the MGC's upper receiver to accept the Todd's Costumes bull barrel.

Speaking of which, thanks so much again for the parts H0llyw00d! The barrel definitely saved my butt on this little project.

Getting this thing tapped properly was a right pain in the booty, but with enough careful threading and hand drilling out the chamber I managed to get it all fit up!

There's definitely still plenty of work I need to do though - the main thing being refinishing the upper receiver (was sanded and polished a fair bit in the meantime; I'll use some Aluminum Black and get it dark again). But I also want to crank some more on this bull barrel and get it fit up perfect; the underside hangs just a BIT too low to be flush with the recess. So that'll get hand sanded down just a touch more.

I was originally in touch with Scott about potentially having this done as a part of a project, but since I found the correct tap I was feeling particularly adventurous and went for it myself! ^^ (Sorry about you loosing this as part of the project though Scott haha)

Took a little effort, but yeah! There is a section without threads which I think you can see; that's where the inner diameter is just naturally too large. I'm thinking of filling it with JB weld just so I'll have additional contact on the threaded male section of the Bull barrel for additional contact, though even without that it feels surprisingly sturdy.

Super glad to have salvaged this thing!

Mostly by hand, yeah! I did chuck the bit up in my drill and went back over things afterwards, but that was mostly to make sure it was completely tapped. I actually had a bit of a scare at one point, as at first the barrel seemed to screw in at a very slight upwards angle. But I managed to find the issue and now it sits straight :)

EDIT: Also; a minor showing of Corellian Export's new replacement MGC grips! For the most part they're more than serviceable, although there's a few minor cast air bubbles that need filling. Future iterations could also stand to be a fair bit darker, though for the value I'm more than happy with them!

don't worry about the small step on the bottom between the barrel and receiver... its on the HERO too.

Nice job... good save.

Thanks; and yeah I'll get it as good as I can - it just hangs a LITTLE too low for my liking as-is.

And just out of curiosity, what did you use to blue your own MGC? I believe Alu Black is what most people use, but just want to get some input before I buy a large bottle of the stuff. (Someone also recommended me Blue Wonder, but I haven't found many examples of that.) Wonder that MGC themselves used for their finish?

Not sure what MGC used. Always lookd very black not blue to me. Prob black ox. Any cold bluing will work on zink based materials. Prob steer clear of bright bluing like Colts use. You may want a Blue/black bluing.

Lots out there. Look for gun bluing or zink patina. PermaBlu, Black Oxide, Zink Black etc.

Surface prep is important. CLEAN. Don't polish the surface. fine sand and finish with 000 steel wool to the smoothness you like. This finish will not cover small scratches like paint.

Warm metal... not too hot. Use brush or rag to apply. May take more than one application to get the color coverage and depth you want. Wipe dry. Let cure for a day and then protect with oil or car wax etc.

Looking great, Vanitas! You could always fill those air bubbles in the grips and paint them the appropriate color. Something to think about!

Thanks MastahBlastah! I actually just decided to purchase some industrial zinc/cadmium black oxide solution to re-darken the upper receiver that I cleaned up a bit. Hopefully that'll let me match the tone back with the lower receiver that I left alone!

(What I have in mind)

EDIT: And yeah, I was also thinking of cleaning up the grips as well. Some epoxy should fill in the few air bubbles around the edges, and I'll be looking into seeing whether or not they can be stained or if they'll need paint. Still got plenty of work to do!

That sounds like a good plan! I was actually referring to the grips though, with the paint comment. If you paint them to better match the MGC grips, you could fill those air bubbles while you're at it. Just a thought!
