From these pics it seems like the head has raised bands or ribs and no grooves.
you can see the edge of the cross sec. the rib sticking out beyond the head body. Where are the two rings recessed rings in any of these other views?

Looks like a top wider rib and a second less distinct rib, maybe the in-between is flat/straight?

Were there more than one type of antenna?

It also seems to suggest that the heads and rods were one piece with a tapered radius transition.

This may have been a model part. Maybe from a ship model? Looks more like a peg of some sort.

Did the SW guys take the time to attach the rods , all nicely centered and with neat glue tapers? (the rest of the cockpit is pretty rough with glue everywhere)

I think that would be unlikely. Why not just use easier parts? The antenna there look a little weird anyway.

I keep coming back to this front sight antenna thing. ( this is the final part we are looking at)

Since we'd like to be able to offer a simple one piece part IN ADDITION to the separate antenna and track, I am trying to settle the overall look and position.

I think Deadbolt posed an interesting question about the recessed rings on the antenna and based on the new speeder pics, it seems they originally had raised ribs. The "rings" we see may be due to the modelers filing off the ribs to make the antenna sit lower on the blasters. The
"rings" may be the remnants of the ribs. Sometimes with injection molded parts, the plastic creates a sink mark due to cooling. You see this on kit models a lot.


This does not change the fact that we would need to duplicate the antenna with the filed off ribs anyway to look like the HEROs.

Aside from that, I am still convinced that the antenna were placed directly on the barrel, next to the track rail.

I found the image below of Leia with the blaster at almost a perfect side view. Slightly high vs a 3/4 bottom angle of the clear Merr Sonn hero)
Even though the photo blow up is poor quality, you can make out the position and placement of the antenna head and track top.

The antenna head is clearly below the T track blade.

In comparing the views and placement, it seems clear that the T track base was ground off or narrowed to allow the antenna to fit as shown.

This is the only explanation I can think of to explain the views. My model proves this out as well. If anyone has any other views or proof that it is different, please post.

I don't see why the modelers would have treated the Solo HERO any different and the photo evidence and positions seem to support this design. The 3d models and my physical model look like the HERO.

The only real question is the condition of the HERO. In some pics there is the one full antenna and maybe a partial track blade, in others the rod is broken. I have seen no photos where the SOLO HERO has the front sight fully in tact but was no doubt designed and produced in one piece. It is prob. sitting at the bottom of that holster!

I know this is a debatable issue and there is a long history of belief here, but for me this is the only way it works.

in the cross section below, you can see where the track had to be trimmed to allow the antenna to match the photos. The track base was either ground off completely but left the full height, or the base edges were trimmed as shown. I think to make a nice looking front sight part, we should trim the base around the antenna and make a solid one piece part.

Just something to think about while we wait for the final 3d models... shouldn't be long now!

I came across these 70's era helicopter toys and noticed the shape of the blade ends. I don't think it's the part we're looking for since it's too large, but maybe similar? Might just be another area for us to look. :)

The helicopter in the photos was made by a company called Madelman.

I tried fiddling with the top view of the ANH blaster pic and couldn't get anything out of it. Sorry! But these antenna things, didn't someone on here ID them? Weren't they toggle switches or something from a mixing board? I did a search and couldn't find the thread, so maybe I dreamt it? :confused

Well this looks to be the possibilities so far for the antenna detail.

The bulged ring doesn't look to be present in the Merr Sonn close up, but looks to be maybe an imprinted ring or seam around the top instead? It may be possible they wrapped wire or maybe a small o-ring into that imprinted ring for the landspeeder dashboard. But who knows!..Seriously, anyone know? :D

I agree that the third antenna looks like the accepted Merr Sonn photo. Since there are no Solo Hero antenna with any detail to suggest anything else we should make them that way for out partss. If we discover anything new we can redo them.

...but I think if we start looking for a part that looks more like the antenna in the speeder photos, we may just find the actual parts. I think we have been searching for a part that looks like the Merr Sonn antenna and it does not exist like that.

The antenna (s) on the speeder have a raised rib near the fat end of the head and a possible second less prominent rib below it and maybe a flat are between them.

Compare the green drawing against the speeder antenna and the Merr Sonn close up in the upper right.

(ignore the glue residue on the top of the head)

In these pics I think it is clear the antenna head and rod are one piece and shaped the way Deadbolt modeled it.

What do you think?

Good thought but it's kind of big for just a seam/parting line flash. This part, if it is a molded plastic part would be split down the length unless it was a part where it was important not to have a parting line. If it was molded and split there, the parting line would be much finer and cleaner if they didn't want a raised rib. It must have a raised rib ring. And note the area just below that ring. Looks like a flat area and then another bump/rib.

I think the ribs may have been filed off for the Merr Sonn blasters to let the antenna sit flatter on the barrel. The recessed rings may be left over sink marks from injection molding or as Carson suggested, glue or paint residue.

Maybe someone will recognize that part if we start visualizing it with the ribs rather than embossed rings.

Could be but wouldn't that have been a little harder to find for these props. Was RC that big in 76 that there would be a bunch of left over parts available?

I was thinking some sort of model part or peg.

If i've learned one thing in my time here, it is that assumptions block the way to identifying parts.
Lets keep our minds open to any and all possibilities.
