ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Why in the world would they set it that way!? Such a pity.
Well, guess that's the problem with the flash hider! :lol

Thanks for the photo kpax!

This looks like the original version.

Note how the gun is photographed - leaning on the table-pushing the FH up!

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

which begs the question.

Is the goal to create an accurate "as it was" ANH prop that has a wobbly FH and other defects due to production damage- or an accurate, how it "should be" replica.

Should we replicate the shortcomings as well or allow the builder to adjust the parts, such as aging and weathering.

I don't think the prop house intended or wanted a wobbly FH... did they?

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

That always depends on the specific person you ask.

From 10 asked users there would be for sure 8 different answers - with a range of answers from "as it was thought as part of the movie-universe", over "as fresh build from the propmakers" to "as used in scene xy" and "as seen on the pics of the real deal at exibition xy". The most here would choose one of the last 3 - a version of "as the original, no matter if wonky".

Not counting the answers like "it has to be light enough to carry it all the day" from the costumers, "it needs to be under xyz$, whatever i get for that" from the people with a tigher budget, or "gold plated with a lot of bling" from the guys without any good taste.

right you are.

Lets try to sort out the best answers old and new finds and make a set of 3d models of highly accurate parts. After that we can decide if there is enough interest to justify a run. Then each person can do what they want with them.

...but a blaster with a two level effect and a path running up the middle would be so nice...

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Just my opinion, but I think the flash hider is off center because a piece was missing or something that kept it that way was missing. It wouldn't make sense to just have it on there so it flopped all over the place.

I've seen a lot of threads where people take pictures too literally and don't think about at what point or in what context the picture was taken. People will reproduce damage to a prop that happened after the movie was produced, because it's in the picture.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

yes, in the post production I can imagine they may have lost the booster insert after cleaning or maintenance. If the booster actually held the FH on the barrel tight.

The barrel length of the Naked runner gun is right about the correct length. The booster hole looks about the right diameter for the bull barrel to fit so it is plausible that they either lost it or forgot to put it back for the post production pics where the FH is tipped.

Has anyone ever seen a production pic or film still with the FH tipped? I haven't

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

One other point about the Grill/Disk area.

It has probably been said on the RPF before but the "Disk" most likely was already on the lower receiver when they built the prop otherwise they would not have needed to cut the curve in the grill to let it show or be out of the way of what ever may have been there.

If it were painted, they could have just painted over it when they painted the grill.

I think that makes sense...

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

There is a disc in that area on the Merr Sonn as the lower receiver was cast from the Naked Runner gun but they covered it with an 'imperial disc'. I did that on my Merr Sonn so the imperial disc is raised.

I always imagined they had an imperial disc on Han's blaster as well. There is a dark spot in the middle of the disc area which could be from where the imperial disc was screwed on.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

I know but as Deadbolt pointed out the disk on the Merr Sonn has a notch in the edge that should have shown up if painted just like the "hole". Anything is possible...

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

also the "hole" is smaller that the threaded rod on the mount in Naked Runner AND there is no mount hole visible in the pre production blaster (without Grill) at the rear position.

curious problem.

I know Lonepigeon addressed earlier.

I think we just have to figure out if the disk is recessed or missing paint. The questions for why and what it was is only relevant to figuring out what it left behind and should look like.

My point was that if the production/film receiver is that same as the pre production (grillless) receiver, then they PUT a disk/pulley on there and carved the grill to fit. If it was the Naked runner receiver it would have larger diameter holes in front and rear.

If it was a NEW receiver, why put the disk area there at all. Maybe for continuity?

Maybe, as I said before, they used the NR receiver for the Merr Sonn castings as suggested by Lonepigeon, realized the HS version would not holster with the pulley/raised disks on it OR it kept coming off so they either swapped the receiver or hid the holes?

One note too, as far as I know, c96 Mausers were not particularly interchangeable so it may not have been that easy to find another lower to fit and operate. It would need smithing. No doubt they had some available but then they "could have welded up the holes and refinished the gun too.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

When I make this blaster again, I'll be using my remaining MGC to do it. I have been following this thread with great interest, because I intend to do the most accurate blaster I can. I wish I had bought a real Mauser near the end of the last century, when I first began looking at them. They're at least 40% higher now than they were back then. Otherwise, I wouldn't even consider using a MGC, when I'd just as soon as use the real thing.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

There could be tons of reasons. But if there is a hole in the center of the disk and the prop makers that built the Blaster are the ones responsible for that hole, then to me it seems possible that it could be for either hardware mounting the 'Disk' on (which sounds less likely that it would fall off) or maybe a hole for a guiding and centering whatever bit used to possibly 'recess' the disk. Which may not of been necessary.

Just a couple possibilities. :)

Here's a picture I used a while back to accurize my MGC a little more, it looks very close to the Mauser in the Pre-Pro shots. It has the correct 'slimmer' looking lip on the front of the lower receiver. And looks to be the same two tone colored mix of pieces too, silver bolt, silver hammer/assembly and the correct Solid safety.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Good point. :thumbsup It may work as a piece by piece run though. Start with one, move on to the next? Wouldn't be a full replica or a kit then.. at least until you've collected all the parts and have begun assembling them. ;)

I'm just going through this awesome thread and stopped at this post. Yes! I agree completely, that if I could grab each part and assemble it myself, that would ROCK! Sign me UP! :cool:thumbsup:thumbsup

Last time I tried to buy a Denix it was seized at the Border. :angry

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Is there no shop in Canada that sells them regulary?

Tried to mail Denix if they have a distributor in Canada?

(y)thumbsup from me too. This would be excellent.

I haven't tried since but it seems "RUKO" is the Canadian distributor for Denix. I don't see any Mauser replicas on their site though.

While we're on the subject of creating parts, would wood grips also be available in this "wish" project? I really want (need) Han's ANH blaster! :lol

If they have Denix, they should be order one with their next order/delivery.

Maybe not the fastest way, but maybe the safest.
Order 2 or more, who knows what version you want next. :lol

They need to be made specific for the Denix, as it´s grip, it´s frame, and it´s mounting is completly wrong and oversized.

If grips were used that were made for real Mausers, the grip/frame of the Denix needs to be reshaped.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Before i went for MGC, i ordered 2x Denix with woodgrips - both times plastic versions arrived. :unsure
