Anakin Starkiller vs Solo's Hold Luke V2 Saber (Plus D-ring, Card & Paint Help/Info)

Re: Anakin Starkiller vs Solo's Hold Luke V2 Saber (Plus D-ring, Card & Paint Help/In

So how many of you who have assembled your Starkiller V2's have used the set screw shaft collar method with your bearing? And how many of you have attached a screw in "mystery chunk"?

Re: Anakin Starkiller vs Solo's Hold Luke V2 Saber (Plus D-ring, Card & Paint Help/In

I did both. I drilled and then tapped the hol for the chunk. However if you screw it in all the way and dont have it centered a little highter up, a corner of the chunk ends up digging a curve into the lip below it. Didnt bother me, figured it would hapen on the real one if they screwed it in.

I also used a set screw shaft collar, works great. Just putting the bearing above the collar makes it spin more smoothly. But if you use the gaffer tape, it wont spin anyway.

Thanks for the info, and did you placer the mystery chunk directly below the knurled knob or is there a specific position a little to the left of right?

Accidental post how do I delete?

Is there a hole already on the V2 for the mystery chunk? Or do we have to drill & tap? & didn't someone find a square set screw at a hardware store for this part?

There is not, you have to drill it and tap it, which is something I'm looking for advice on doing.

Here is the link, http://www.mcmaster.com/#94087a114/=10kzq1i that one is in stainless steel, I ordered one in stainless and one in oxidized steel.

I tried very hard to get Dan to drill the hole on the V2 with no luck.

I'm probably going to just cut down the screw and glue it on the body. If it's placed wrong, (or the real piece identified) I can always pop it off and fix it with minimal damage to the prop. If you have minimal experience drilling in metal, I think it's better than risking ruining the prop with a bad hole.

Wow, Excellent job! She looks gorgeous! But what method did you use to instll the d-ring? The regular cut a 16'th from each side and then open it up with pliers?

No, I just opened it up with two pairs of pliers and then closed it again with the same pliers! 1/2 minute job. When closing you just need to bend the ring on both sides, otherwise it'll be all lopsided.

It's pretty easy, you just need to have the right drill bit to go with the tap. I got lucky and happened to have both that matched the size of the squared off set screw. Otherwise I would have just drilled the hole and ground it down with the bit until I could hammer the screw in.

What do you mean by bend it on both sides?

Do we know if this run will include the D-ring? Or will I need to add it to my soon-to-be-ordered clamp lever from Roy?

By the way, if anyone out there needs parts from Roy (wannawanga.com), he's awesome!!!

Re: Anakin Starkiller vs Solo's Hold Luke V2 Saber (Plus D-ring, Card & Paint Help/In

Thanks man! Is this the correct size square head bolt?
It is. Here is the link for the same thing in different types of steel
316 stainless- http://www.mcmaster.com/#94087a114/=10l1n2u
alloy steel- http://www.mcmaster.com/#91416a110/=10l1ike and in
plain steel- http://www.mcmaster.com/#91416a110/=10l1ike
18-8 stainless- http://www.mcmaster.com/#92308a537/=10l1m91
I ordered all of them to see which one looks the closest to the color of the saber. I also ordered set screw sleeves to keep the emitter and bearing on, here is the link for those if you are interested.
Black oxide steel- http://www.mcmaster.com/#9414t7/=10l1iga
316 stainless- http://www.mcmaster.com/#9943k17/=10l1igv
303 stainless- http://www.mcmaster.com/#6462k13/=10l1iho
Brass- http://www.mcmaster.com/#6240k14/=10l1iil

I don't have a good reason for ordering all the different materials of sleeves since they are never seen.

I imagine it will also include a d-ring but I would recommend ordering one from roy anyways since his d-rings are custom made and super accurate, more so than I imagine any other d-ring could be aside from the one actually used on the saber.

It's a bit hard to explain, but when you stick the half open D-ring in the hole on one side, and you close it by bending the other side only, you end up with a lopsided ring. BTW, only open the D-ring ever so slightly, just enough to stick it in.

Didn't brandon say it was a chunk of aluminium?

Re: Russrep vs Solo's Hold vs Anakin Starkiller Luke V2 Saber replica? (Plus D-ring H

A lot of this info is in the Starkiller V2 thread and the corresponding first run thread. I did mine with Semi-gloss.
Semi gloss rustoleum? Also how did you get your paint on the rings so cleanly? Did you mask off the individual rings?
