An RPF Open Source 5 ft Millennium Falcon Build/Reference Thread. All Are Welcome

Woo-hoo! Nice FIND! Are you telling? I put a Payhauler piece there, which is clearly wrong if this one is the right piece. Does the length match with the greeblie that sits on top?

I don't know. Honestly I don't. Maybe the experts can weigh in here. Heck it might not even be right.

Ok i’m going to weigh in with my opinion.

Not saying you should share. Not saying you shouldn’t share. What I am saying is if you did the hard work and you found a part yourself the info is yours to share if you want to. No matter who else found it 10 years ago. It’s your work.

I get the sense you are worried about breaking some unwritten rule. There is only one real rule: if it’s somebody else’s work then it isnt yours to share.

One rule of thumb I've learned in six years of posting is what I call Rule Number One:

1.) Never post a claim if you don't have the part in your physical possession to compare with neighboring parts. It's way too easy (and I fell for it often) to get super-excited about a matching shape that you see on a Parts Tree scan, or an Ebay listing, and then pre-emptively make a declaration that turns out to be a red herring. Get excited, then buy the kit, then check, and then make the claim. It takes longer, is more expensive, but builds trust/credibility much better. It's also when you DO do your homework first, and "prove" it's a match, that others who have gone before you will typically come out of hiding and say, "Psst, that looks good, but it's the wrong part -- the right part is this one" and I've been helped out of my own "certainty" more than once on things like this by showing my work.

2.) The Second Rule I Always Follow: If you're a man, never put the phrase, "I've been told that it is too small" in any post, ever, anywhere, about anything.... ; )

(I mean, c'mon, you did kind of walk yourself right into that one...)

One year in. Hard to believe.

I've learned so much this year and it's all thanks to the work and helpfulness of all those here both present and past.

I'd like to wish you all a happy holiday season and tell you how grateful I am for all of the help and friendly conversations over the last year. I hope the New Year brings you all cool projects, no need for Band-Aids, cheap kit prices, and lots of fun....

John

Santa hooked me up with some sweet planes. I’m thinking it might be time for some shelves . Lol

I understand not wanting to drive prices up, I really do, but that ship has sailed. My TIE-Fighter has cost me more than $8,000 to build and I'm not done. If you think you're going to get into studio scale model making without spending gobs of money, I've got bad news for you. Just the Sealab alone is going north of $1000 and it's in every A New Hope model. Or the Bandai Panther G, when I bought my first one it was $35 now they go for $75. I get it, I really do, none of us want to see this hobby get any more exspensive than it already is but I'm not sure how we're supposed to know which model kits we can talk about and which we can't. I don't want to piss anybody off, especially all the people that have really helped me over the years. I couldn't make any of the models I do without the help and support of this community. I know we've all dealt with a lot of leaches over the years, "tell me all the kits". Hell, I've been guilty of that in my early days but I think we need to cut each other some slack, especially for those who have actually contributed to this community.
ABSOLUTELY! (y) (y) (y) (y)
It's mind boggling, in my opinion, to keep such info a secret:rolleyes: This is not CIA/FBI material folks. As for keeping the "leeches" at bay...well, good luck with that. At a certain point in time, your "secret" will be reveal whether you like it or not...as I said: time is of the essence.
When I find something "rare" I share, period. Keeping info is having power over someone and this type of hobby and the folks dedicating their efforts to it don't deserve it.

Joberg I couldn't have said it better myself. The only thing I don't share is if I'm told in confidence, "hey this is top secret" or "hey I figured this out, don't tell anyone". I wish there was more sharing going on, it really slows everyone down not to. I'd love to see more scratch building too but as I said before, it's a stupidly exspensive hobby.

I don't see any issue keeping certain details secret, publicly, and only sharing with actual falcon builders.
When it comes to rare items they have to be protected from stashers and hoarders. There's a lot of folk out there with more money than sense in my experience that just stash these items away if they get their hands on them and do nothing with them simply because they are rare and sort after and don't plan to do anything with them.. and there's plenty more of these folk than actual falcon builders.
So I say only share info on those rare items with actual Falconers.
