Amazon's Lord of the Rings (tv series)

The tone seems to want us to have some empathy for Sauron at times. No, man. No.
Also the metal smith elf looks so much like Michael Palin it takes me out of the story every time I see him.
That's it. Don't mince words. Just give it to me raw.

It's getting depressing seeing everyone succumb to the hubris and deception that will bring about the darkest days in the history of Middle Earth, that will only be made right in another 1000 years or whatever and not even within the scope of this series. The lives of almost all the characters just get worse from here. It's the story the writers were dealt, but I don't know if I'm going to enjoy experiencing it.

Wonder if some unknown dark Jedi will make themselves known out of the shadows, and get our hopes up...

...wait, wrong series.

spoiler alert, Isildur cuts the ring off Sauron's finger

Sauron, enemy of the free peoples of Middle-Earth, was defeated. The Ring passed to Isildur, who had this one chance to destroy evil forever, but the hearts of men are easily corrupted. And the ring of power has a will of its own. It betrayed Isildur, to his death.

In all seriousness though I assume the whole series will most likely be a lead up to and culminate in the Last Alliance of men and elves and the victory over Sauron which in the end will be bittersweet.

But yeah, the fall of Khazad-dum, the fall of Numenor etc...

Also, while I am dreading that it will wind up being Saruman, they are at the very least strongly trying to make you think it is him, much the same way all signs point to the stranger as being Gandalf.

The problem with Saruman, not counting him being there in the second age all together, is that he seems to be an "evil" figure already but should still be on the side of "good" and does not reveal himself until "Lord of the Rings" time frame when it is a big shock to the forces of good

Finished Season 2, and I have to say I actually enjoyed it overall. They're still moving faster thru the timeline than I'd like, but meh, I'm fine with it.

I've found it helpful to ignore any kind of "canon" discrepancies mostly by considering that (1) they can't use Silmarillion material, (2) "canon" is a fairly squishy thing for Tolkein beyond the original four books, and (3) you can treat a lot of the rest as "legends" for which there can be different versions. With this as just another version.

Some stuff is a little obvious (e.g., "Grand-Elf"), but the rest has been overall better this season.

I think the first season just had SO much table setting to do that it felt more incoherent. This season felt more focused.
