Aliens: Colonial Marines

Liking the box art.
Watched the walkthrough, loved it up until the first alien attack, which seemed like a bit of an anticlimax. I think I'm going to want this game for the cutscenes if nothing else...

See? This can't acknowledge Alien3. The Sulaco's name is in black as it was in ALIENS. In Alien3, it was white!

Saw the game up for pre-order locally here. No release date yet but hey at least somethings happening!

Indeed. Was announced in December 2006 but real development didn't start until around 2008.

Actually, this game has been bouncing around for over ten years at least, being passed between different developers and publishers, originally to be released for the PS2. Many years ago I worked with one of the people that was responsible for the story during the "early years" and I say be VERY grateful that the game was never finished way back when, because it would have been awful.

As for inconsistencies and things like adding new breeds of Aliens... the reality is this: a pure 100% canon game that would please all the hard-core fans (of which I am one) would never, ever, ever, EVER have become a reality. the simple fact is that 90% of the people that will buy the game will never notice those things and to successfully make and market a game like A:CM you need to cater to those 90% first and foremost. I don't much like it either, but that's the reality of it all. I was actually (kind of) involved with creating a prototype game for the Aliens franchise once (back when I wrote scripts and directed cutscenes for games before moving on to design and more recently, producing) and the license is generally viewed with heavy skepticism by publishers.

I will be happy if this game capture the feel of playing through some of the greatest moments in Aliens, even if the plot is not 100% consistent. NO Alien game has succeeded in that area so far.

It may have been announced in 2006, but I first learned it was in development around 2002-2003. The guy I worked with at that time had already worked on it but it never went anywhere. I actually think that version had been shelved before I heard of it and the first time I heard of it was around ten years ago. Announcing is not the same as bouncing around. ;)

Nope, as I already said in my last post. Might want to read the rest of it.

A previous game titled Aliens: Colonial Marines was developed by Check Six Games and was to be published by Fox Interactive and Electronic Arts for the PlayStation 2 in 2001, but was cancelled before its release. A more traditional first-person shooter, it shared the same subject matter and setting as the upcoming Gearbox-developed game. Its story was to be set between the events of Aliens and Alien 3, concerning a rescue team of Colonial Marines searching for the Sulaco. Despite the similarities in gameplay and story, however, Gearbox has claimed that their upcoming game is unrelated to this early version.

As other people have already pointed out, this game was originally announced and started development about 11 years ago. I remember the issue of EGM that unveiled it. It was an FPS, exact same name, took place between Aliens and Alien 3, and it involved them searching for the Sulaco. Hell, I probably still have that issue somewhere in a box, I should try to find it.

The concept has been floating around for a decade, but the game itself has not. The original version you guys are referring to was scrapped a long time ago, and this new one was created from the ground up by a completely different company.

Read the Wiki article that Alienscollection posted, it explains it all pretty clearly. This is a totally different game than the one that was announced 11 years ago.

I did read it. And right you are! While that's true, the same thing happened to Duke Nukem Forever several times during it's 14 year "development". Entire builds were thrown out, and the game was rebuilt from the ground up at least four times. The build of the game we ended up getting was actually only in development for two years or so, and mostly by a completely different team, yet no one considers any of the previous builds a "totally different game".

Considering that, I suppose that's why several of us still consider this the same game that was announced 11 years ago.

That is totally different, since the same people worked on the game over the years, unlike A:CM where none of the original developers have worked on this version. 3D Realms started working on DNF, but could not finish it. After 3DR closed their doors Gearbox software, Triptych Games and Piranha Games finished their work and released DNF.

Also the only thing the PS2 game and Gearbox's A:CM have in common is the name. Like for example if I make a movie called "Stargate" about a hotel in Alberta, Canada over the course of 23 some odd years, does that mean it has something to do with a certain other movie/tv show called Stargate? No. A good title is a good title. gearbox liked the title so they used it, simple as that. :)

Hahah, fair enough. We could go back and forth all day, but that would just be silly.

I just hope the game doesn't suck. I really, really want it to be good. Especially after how awful 2010's AvP game was.

That is totally different

No, it isn't. At least it isn't regarded as such within the industry. (As a Producer in it, I better darn well know what's what or else I should be doing something else.) The "game" in this instance is a proposed product and an intent to release it. Doesn't matter if a single line of code has been passed on, the intent to release this as a product has been going back and forth for ages. The core idea of the product hasn't really changed all that much from when I first heard it, so all efforts that have been done up until now can be regarded as the various prototype stages. Finally, someone got the pitch right and got the green light to do it.

Certainly, you could start to argue the point "when does a game become a game" but there is no point to that here. This game was in development ten years ago and was shelved. Other people have talked about taking up the torch. (I know... I've worked for the license holder once upon a time...) Now gearbox got the puzzle right and all the stars lined up so that's why it's finally happening.
