Aliens: Colonial Marines

I don't see how this is any different than the Aliens game that was released last year? Is there a better online multiplayer engine?

trailer cut scenes look cool. I just hope the gameplay and multiplayer is exponentially better than AVP from last year.

I'm not gonna jump and buy this right away like I did with last years AVP, I'll wait to see actual gameplay and reviews its not a good feeling when you fork over $65 and then the game sucks :(

GearBox just posted a live presentation of Aliens: Colonial Marines featuring gameplay and cinematic footage. Here comes my commentary on their commentary.

Randy Pitchford: I'm freaking out because we are making an Aliens game! Somehow 20th Century fox decided to trust our publisher Sega and our studio Gearbox Software to make "Aliens: Colonial Marines". To make a true sequel to the film in video game form.[/bi

So they're still sticking to with their quote that this game is going to be a true sequel to Aliens, yet at the same time still maintain that Alien3 actually happened. I guess that might work... until we see this.

Wonderful. Despite the developers stating that Alien3 did happen, they sure forgot one of the biggest retcons that movie made just to make it so it could happen!

As the video plays out, we see that both Marine ships crash into LV-426 head first and the surviving marines are now back at Hadley's Hope. They walk through the complex to find yet another retcon.

That's right. One of the face huggers in the tubes is still alive and kicking. What was it that Bishop said regarding the face huggers that were stored in ALIENS?

Bishop: Two are alive, the rest are dead.

And later in the movie, Burke uses those two face huggers to try and impregnate Ripley and Newt. Both of the face huggers were killed and annihilated by full bursts from M41A Pulse Rifles. There should not be anymore living face huggers in med lab after the face hugger scene!

Randy Pitchford: Remember that map that Hudson used to find civies? That's it.

Not a retcon, but bad continuity. If you look closely, you can see that the map shown is the atmospheric processor, but that was not the last time our characters used that map. Remember when Ripley and Hicks were using that same map to determine the best way to defend themselves from the Aliens? Guess they forgot about that plot that detail to.

Later on, the marines are attacked by Aliens and your character gets pushed outside by another Alien when...

More bad continuity. The Aliens are sporting Alien Resurrection, AvP and AvPR style tails. At least they don't have that god awful chin that the designers from both movies thought would make the creatures more "menacing". But that won't stop Gearbox from trying something different.

Randy Pitchford: An all new species of alien.

Let me guess. Pre-Queen?

Randy Pitchford: We call it the crusher. Your bullets can't penetrate it's thick armor. It wants to smash you with it's head.

No, no. You got it wrong. There was already a breed of Aliens that did that kind of job. It was called the Bull Alien!

And last but not least, my favorite part of the video.

These marines have been fighting the aliens for a good ten minutes, they know how sneaky and clever they are, so the best place to establish a defense perimeter is in-between two large vents.

Well, one major change is that the colony is there at all. Let me guess, the atmosphere processor is still standing, too? Yeah, Bishop was probably exaggerating when he said that it would a "cloud of vapor the size of Nebraska", but there's no way Hadley's Hope would still be standing.. it was what, a mile from the processing station?

I was under the impression from Alien Resurrection, based on the idea that they were going through all the trouble with Ripley, that the derelict ship was also destroyed in the explosion. Otherwise, they could have just flown in and picked up as many eggs as they wanted.

I also don't like the "new type of alien" thing. That alone might be enough to put me off of this game. They seem incapable of figuring out how to make an exciting game in the Alien universe with only one kind of adversary. Rather than give us interesting, exciting, and scary situations, they decide to cheap out and give us the exact same situations as every other game, and earlier parts of this game, but make the enemies tougher. That's just lazy game design.

Any idea if we're going to see the original Giger design in this game? I remember YEARS ago they mentioned having it as a separate class of enemy (ranging from scout, to drone, to Alpha Male boss, etc), but without any details or screencaps to back it up I have my doubts...

I still have my fingers crossed for this game. the last one that came out for the xbox was really fair at best, bordering on bad. I did the marine missions, played with the predator stuff a bit and then sold it.

I have been watching this game a years now and hoping for the best. the last footage I saw with their commentary running over it didn't get my hopes up all that much though. I am really tired of them coming out with a new type of alien every time a new game is released. Im happy with the bugs from the first two films, please leave it at that.

One of my biggest gripes with the last few aliens games is that the aliens will be nowhere to be seen and then suddenly there's dozens of them popping up all over but it's all done with triggered events. There's nothing on the tracker then you take one step and bang! You are swarmed. if you walk backwards you can even see them materialize from nothing in some of these games. As old as it is, the original aliens vs predator on the PC had them show up realistically, you could see where they were hiding, you could flush them out of some areas and thin their numbers before you walked in somewhere to get killed. It just felt more realistic in many ways than the newer ones have since.

As far as Aliens and multiplayer goes I have yet to have a better time online than in the ancient online only game ALIENS:Online . Yeah the graphics sucked but the game was loads of fun. Sigh, the good old days. :darnkids

Aliens Infestation was great, worth picking up if you're an Aliens fan and own a DS. But be warned, it's really, really short. Seriously, I finished it within four hours my first play through.

It would have been nice if this would have replaced Aliens 3 in the timeline. I always had fun with the Aliens arcade game and the AVP arcade game where you could play as Dutch.

Sucks so bad they removed squad commands and stuff like that :angry
Maybe for the sequel!

I remember this being talked about back on the original playstation, then the PS2

Completely different game.

Last Aliens game DID suck.

AvP isn't ALIENS. Thank god.

however it is supposed to be on the right side of the magazine section).

The ammo counter was on the right side in the movie for a very logical reason, being visible to the camera. They just fixed that for the game so now it's also visible to the player :)

Including the story to Alien3 is a mistake

Amen, Alien 3 and Resurrection are just really bad dreams. Hicks never died! :p

Let me guess, the atmosphere processor is still standing, too?

It is, watch the 10 min demo video and you will see it.

That is sooo stupid:facepalm It blew up! If they wanted to use a colony setting then just use a different colony. Not one that blew up.

Yeah, I saw that video.. not only is it still there, it's almost entirely intact, with only one side blown off, Mount St. Helens style. Yeah, it's probably safe to assume that Bishop was exaggerating a bit when he said "cloud of dust the size of Nebraska", but still.. thermonuclear explosion.

It's the little things like that that are putting me off the game. The big one is the "new types of aliens" thing. That's just stupid, I'm sorry. If you're not smart enough to create interesting gameplay with only one type of enemy (it IS possible), then maybe this isn't the franchise you should be working on.

They mention the derelict, it'll be interesting to see where they go with that. Maybe they'll actually explain why the company didn't just go get more eggs from the ship to begin with.

Completely different game.
Nope, same game. The original developers went under and it was picked up later on. Same plot. Same attempt to fill in the hole between Aliens and Alien 3. This one has been in the works for quite some time. Not quite Duke Nukem time, but still a long long time.

This one has been in the works for quite some time.

Indeed. Was announced in December 2006 but real development didn't start until around 2008. The game you are thinking of is completely different. Only thing the two share is the name and the fact that both were aiming for a co-op experience. Different plot.

And it has been confirmed on the official forum that we will get to visit the derelict.
