Aliens: Colonial Marines

From Kotaku's Article...

This game opens shortly after the ending of Alien 3 with members of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation arriving at the Sulaco to investigate.

:angry

You play as Winter

Ok. For those of you who know how much I love to rant about stuff I hate, or those who like Alien3 in general, this is my opinion on the game's story line.

It sucks. Including the story to Alien3 is a mistake because all I'm seeing here is "Ripley was a failure in the movies because all her heroic actions only made things worse, so we have this group marine dudes to come in and do the work properly".

I know that's a bit extreme, but that's what I'm getting. You play a male marine character who is no doubt the hero of the story in a series that has made a mark for itself in having a female character take charge of the story and truly develop into a hero by the end of Aliens. Following up on Alien3 just destroys that prospect entirely since Alien3 deems Ripley's rescue of Newt as a mistake! The article even has this to say.

"They discover Aliens and with the help of Ellen Ripley, ALL DIE TRYING TO KILL THEM OFF."

*cocks shotgun*
I'll go first.
*aims below his jaw*

I kind of stopped reading when I read "a new type of alien". Probably the single worst thing they could have done is to try to make it "better".

You're probably gonna want to take that shotgun out from under your jaw and point it at me first for mentioning this but...well here goes..........

Didn't AVP completely negate Ripley's mission to prevent the Aliens from reaching Earth by saying they had been there a long time ago? TPTB have kind of screwed her character enough by this point that I'd figure them saying she helped kill all those Marines can't really do that much more damage than has already been done.

This just pisses me off. Idiots need to stop trying to "improve" things. Do they really not have enough material to just have the story set in the Alien universe? Aliens are scary and are a big enough villain to stand on their own without extra s$#& piled on top. :angry

That's the issue that's always bothered me. Just one of those things, whether it be a warrior or Queen gets out of your sights, the world is theirs. It took only one face-hugger to bring an entire colony down. The fact that thousands were on the loose in ancient times and in modern times totally diminishes what ever world wide threat these creatures posed, especially in THE FUTURE!.

So it's not just Ripley that got diminished, it's also the Aliens.

I'm cautious but relatively optimistic with what I've seen and heard so far, the folks at Gearbox developing this title were also behind Borderlands which was hugely popular among our XBL group a few years back, if they can deliver as polished a multiplayer co-op component here as they did with that game this could potentially be quite an entertaining experience.

time to be a little more original rather than relying on an old formula. someone should go back and have the films played as a game, drive the apc, fly the dropship and land it, find newt, kill and battle the queen - base it on the film with some little twists. a game with a james horner soundtrack blasting away really would wow me

You know, there actually WAS a game just like this. No really. I played it on....the Commodore 64. It was pretty badass as I remember. Land the dropship, fight your way to the APC, crawl through the airducts, rescue Newt, and fight the Queen. And you could break movie canon and actually get most of the squad back alive.

It would rock if they redid that on a modern machine.

Having said that, I will probably at least try this new one. The last one that came out was meh, but I actually enjoyed Extinction.

Yeah, there were two "Aliens" games on the C64, weren't there? The US and the UK version. I think the one you're talking about was the US version. The level where you had to get the squad out of the cocoon area was ace.
