Re: Aliens APC - 1/12 - ** 37th upd., pg 19 **
Hey guys,
My new job is settling down now, so i can once again spend more time on the APC's.
Regarding paint:
RAL 7013 is definitely not the same as Humbrol 170 Brown Bess. To be honest i don't have Revell 46. Beware that most printed color charts differ from the real deal. Same as the color of the lid of the paint tin generally not looking 100% the same as it's content.
As far as i know, there simply is not a ready made/mixed paint that's equal to Brown Bess. And believe me, we have tried.
People have been trying to remix Brown Bess, the Aliens Legacy forum has a few threads in its archive section where members used Tamiya, for example.
As for casting the hull:
I build up two layers of tinted tixotropic (thick and sticky) resin in the silicone mold with a 20mm and a 40mm brush, leaving time for each to set in between.
Then again coated with clear epoxy with a 40mm brush. Precut carbonfibre is impregnated with resin using a paintroller, outside the mold on a taped piece of plastic sheet, and then inserted, rolled out into the mold gently by pushing it down firmly with my (gloved) fingers, inch by inch, preventing any airbubbles at the same time. For the roof, 3 layers of carbonfibre are impregnated at once (layer 1, epoxy rolled into it, layer 2 on top of layer 1, epoxy rolled into it, etc.).
A paintroller pushes out air from the composite, while speeding up the working area. Where possible, a mohair roller is used to push out excess resin and airbubbles.
I leave a hull a minimum of 48 hours into the mold after setting.
Hope this helps. Feel free to shoot any questions.
Cheers,
Wasili
