ALIEN Warrior head refurbishing project.....

I was set to get one of those heads years ago from Ian. May still have the emails somewhere. The only thing I see is I haven't seen or heard from him in years.

Behold! The first cast!
Came out really well considering I had no idea what I was doing. Would have been perfect if I hadnt accidentally dumped out half the upper teeth resin (Doh!)
But as far as the texture, fit, and detail picked up, im very pleased. Cant wait to do a "real" cast when my gel gets here. This one is just straight fiberglass / resin. It has some thin areas and needs some filling in behind the teeth. If someone ends up with this cast I just want it to be clear that this is NOT a perfectly flawless cast and will need some work. Cool? Cool.

Over 30 years since Alien was released and people still make dick jokes about the alien's skull...

Since this issue has been resolved, please continue to discuss the making of the item. Please remember the ever-standing rule of no sales talk of any kind outside of the Junkyard.

We didn´t have a discussion like this one for quite some time, IIRC.
But I want to point out that this was not the "end all"-discussion about recasting, although it may look to some people like it was. All future cases will be decided on a case-by-case basis, and we are going to be as vigilant regarding recasters as we can.

Now, please back on topic with the focus on the build.

Thanks,
Michael

Hey guys! Just an update showing some casts. The eopxy resin gelcoat I had a man-crush on was totally worthless for this application. Ive seen auto body panels made with this stuff and they looked KILLER but apparently it shrinks like crazy when in a mold. No idea why.
The first problem was the epoxy wouldnt stick to the silicone. It ran off of it like water off a windshield.

I managed to get some fiberglass mat soaked with epoxy and used that as a laminate in one experimental section with decent results...even so the shrinkage is unacceptable.

My next plan was to spray the interior of the mold with black primer to give the epoxy something to bite into and stick. It kinda worked...

More on the epoxy here in an bit, but the next experiment was with slushcasting urethane resin. It was a great suggestion by Kagn and was much appreciated since I didnt have the balls to try it without an experienced and talented member such as him giving me the thumbs up. The results were great!

Back to the epoxy...When I finally beat it into submission and got it to stick to the mold, I thought iI was home free- that I would pull a perfect cast exactly as planned. I followed through with the fiberglass /polyester resin backing and cast the upper teeth onto the head. It was a disaster lol.
Believe it or not but the epoxy and polyester DIDNT STICK to eachother. I wound up with a fibrglass shell with a thin skin of loose epoxy that shrank by 5%.
Here's a picture, the epoxy/fiberglass version is obviously smaller than the full size urethane cast. The resin I using actually expands a bit while curing so zero shrinkage compared to the original.

And hey pretty soon it looks like we'll be doing the tounge sculpt! One of our members just so happens to be a dentist and has very generously donated some false human lower incisors for use as the "flat" teeth on the alien tounge, just like Giger used 30yrs ago. A huge amount of thanks goes out to him, and to all of you as well for your support and interest in all this:)

Simply amazing! Such a perfect cast. I really love the top teeth. There alot better than the teeth I have on my warrior head.

Looking forward to seeing how the Tongue turns out.

Cheers
