Hey guys! Just an update showing some casts. The eopxy resin gelcoat I had a man-crush on was totally worthless for this application. Ive seen auto body panels made with this stuff and they looked KILLER but apparently it shrinks like crazy when in a mold. No idea why.
The first problem was the epoxy wouldnt stick to the silicone. It ran off of it like water off a windshield.
I managed to get some fiberglass mat soaked with epoxy and used that as a laminate in one experimental section with decent results...even so the shrinkage is unacceptable.
My next plan was to spray the interior of the mold with black primer to give the epoxy something to bite into and stick. It kinda worked...
More on the epoxy here in an bit, but the next experiment was with slushcasting urethane resin. It was a great suggestion by Kagn and was much appreciated since I didnt have the balls to try it without an experienced and talented member such as him giving me the thumbs up. The results were great!
Back to the epoxy...When I finally beat it into submission and got it to stick to the mold, I thought iI was home free- that I would pull a perfect cast exactly as planned. I followed through with the fiberglass /polyester resin backing and cast the upper teeth onto the head. It was a
disaster lol.
Believe it or not but the epoxy and polyester DIDNT STICK to eachother. I wound up with a fibrglass shell with a thin skin of loose epoxy that
shrank by 5%.
Here's a picture, the epoxy/fiberglass version is obviously smaller than the full size urethane cast. The resin I using actually
expands a bit while curing so zero shrinkage compared to the original.
And hey pretty soon it looks like we'll be doing the tounge sculpt! One of our members just so happens to be a dentist and has very generously donated some false human lower incisors for use as the "flat" teeth on the alien tounge, just like Giger used 30yrs ago. A huge amount of thanks goes out to him, and to all of you as well for your support and interest in all this
