Interestingly, when Ripley's helmet re-appears in the opening of ALIENS, it suddenly has a light on top.

I never noticed that before with Ripley's helmet at the beginning of Aliens.

That helmet is a bit of an enigma. Seems odd that they would have added the light to the helmet between movies BUT Steve and I have information that this helmet does exist and that there is a 4th helmet with the light attached. Its not Bob Burns Ripley helmet , Not PSOL's helmet(which I believe is the Dallas helmet) or Kanes( converted face(missing, most likly burned). Seems that it was either made later or there was originally a back up helmet. Could be a kids version as I dont think the Kane kids suit is accounted for, later repainted.

Look at that screencap from ALIENS...

The interior of the helmet isn't detailed at all, we can see that when it's scanned by the monitored arm at the begining of the film !

So I would say it's a recast of one of the original ALIEN helmets, made especialy for its sequel... or one of the kids helmets (was their interior detailed ???). (it looks pretty small, compared to what we can glimpse of the set)

I can't be sure, but I think the ALIENS helmet must be an adult-sized helmet... the kids' helmet seems too small. Especially in the big pan shot of the Narcissus where you see the helmet sitting on the control panel, it looks adult-sized.

So that means either an unknown backup helmet painted white, or else they made a new one for the sequel.

On the one hand, if the production of ALIEN did not have a backup helmet, that seems pretty odd, since the space suits are so critical to the plot. What if one got damaged?

Then again, since Ripley's helmet is supposed to be Lambert's helmet painted white, that implies that they did not have a backup (unless maybe they just had an extra set of helmet parts sitting around and THAT was the backup... they would have built up a helmet if they needed to, but to save time they just repainted a used one...?)

If the ALIENS helmet is really the Ripley helmet with a white-painted light fixture installed on top, you'd think Bob Burns would remember them borrowing the helmet from him and then giving it back (since it's still in his collection).

The helmet looks too accurate to be a total scratchbuild made for ALIENS... but then again they had to rebuild the Narcissus miniature, so why not. I'll have to dig up my old Cinefex on ALIENS I guess...

I don't think you can draw any conclusions on whether the ALIENS helmet has the photoetch detailing, from just screengrabs. The scene is shot DARK (on purpose, to camoflauge just how sketchy the Nacrissus re-creation set acually is!)

If there are any still photos shot on the set it may be possible to see better, but since the helmet is painted white, it'll be hard to tell unless the lighting is just right.

Its NOT the Ripley helmet reused for ALIENS with a light added. There IS, reapeat IS, another helmet out there in a collectors hands with the Light on it. I can not post pics but I have seen them.

So this helmet probably IS the ALIENS helmet.

Thus at least one more helmet.

I cant imagine the ALIENS crew adding a light if they barrowed it from Bob Burns since the helmet would have been correct except for some paint touch-ups.

Lambert helmet IS the Ripley helmet.

Dallas helmet most likely on the PSOL display.

Kane helmet most likely destroyed by adding the facehugger scene and when cut in half for that scene and later thrown on a bonfire per Bower.

ALIENS white helmetwith lamp IS a 4th helmet.

On the Aliens white lamp helmet there is the turn switch on the right side. You can see it in the above screen grabs.
The Ripley white helmet in ALIEN does not have the turn knob for the lamp. This a a detail I don't think they would have added to the original white helmet just for this shot. So do we thing that for this shot they added the top lamp and also added the knob... odds are not likely.

Just so everybody knows, I was not seriously suggesting that the ALIENS helmet is Rilpley's helmet with a lamp added. I was saying that HAD this been the case, Bob Burns would have remembered it, implying that it would be common knowledge by now.

So there's a 4th helmet, with a lamp like the EVA suits, but painted white like the survival suit. Interesting.
