Alice in Wonderland's Red knight aka Queen's card soldier

Hey guys,
For halloween this year, I decided to create the costume of the card soldier from Alice. Mind you, I couldn't remember anything from the movie .. and I still thought they were little card man with a red hat! Boy was I wrong ...

After looking around on the net, I found this design .. which I find totally awesome ...

I figured this would be "kinda" easy to create .. so after sniffing around some more .. I found this guy who already did it ...

Now, the question is .. is this guy on this forum? If not .. I'm planning on using this type of material to do it

Red Foam Roll 36"X60" FOAMROLL-73

It's low density foam that comes in sheet of 36x60 or smaller (but I'll need the big one). Although I just CAN'T seem to find this anywhere in Montreal, Canada, I'll figure a way to get it shipped from the US I guess...

HOpefully, I can figure this out within a month which should be feasible ..

Thoughts? Tips? Comments?

hehe the moment I saw the movie I wanted to make one of these..
the one you showed looks pretty cool, but it would be a lot better if it has the same weathered look.

as for the foam I live in Europe can't really help you out.. the schoudlers of the current one look like the camping mats I've seen people using before.

Anyways.. Good luck..!! I'll be following you!

OK - I guess I should really make an effort to see the movie now :)
I think this design is awesome for the card soldier.

As for foam in the Montreal area - you've got different choices, but nothing is equivalent to the what you're linking. The roll is 2mm "craft foam" or foamies, so ...

1- You can easily buy small sheets (9"x12") of this stuff at any dollarstore.
2- You'd be able to find bigger sheets of this same stuff at Wal-Mart (12"x18"), but they are pricey compared to what you'll pay for the smaller sheets.
3- You are able to find camping mats (20" x 74") in dollar store as well... but they will be thicker (6mm) and of a lower density and durability
4- You could get thicker small sheets (6mm but still 9" x 12")... I've only seen these at the "Fôret du Dollar" in Brossard (behind the Panama bus stop).
5- Final option is anti-fatigue foam mat in 2 different formats
a) Dollar store: 12"x12" tiles at about 6mm thickness
b) Hardward store: 24"x24" tiles at about 10mm thickness

That's all the foam option we have in Quebec.
If you're planning on going to Ontario in the near future, you'll find the rolls you've linked at craft store like Jo'ann or Micheal's.

Wow!
Awesome info buddy .. thanks a lot!!

I'll go check my dollar store tonight .. never thought about it! Walmart is a good call too .. I'll check it out and let you guys know for those who follow this thread anyway! ;)

For those in the unknow, the specific make of the foam we're talking about is Darice Foamies roll/36x60.

I need at least one of those as I don't want to patch my chest/shoulder area with small 9x12 sheets .. so I'll probably end up ordering them on the internet. I found one store that could ship DSL to me.

I just finished downloading the 1080 HD version of the movie .. I'll take screenshots tonight and post them for future reference!

@ Fullmetalsam Where you from, I live in Rosemont .. juste a cote du stade! ;)

Hehe - glad to be able to help... not many on here are from Quebec (unless I've missed them somehow).

To answer your question... Je suis à St-Hyacinthe (30 min du Tunnel sur la 20 en direction de Québec)... that's kind of why I rely mostly on wal-mart and dollar stores... maybe you've got something special in Montreal that I'm not aware of. But it would have to be a special store somewhere, because I've been to the obvious places and they don't have anything outside of what I already mentionned :)

Let me know from who you'll be ordering those rolls... if they can ship to Quebec, I'd be very much interested to know about them - sometime you just need that big sheet because you're not able to hide the seam lines between the small sheets.

That seems so cool. Can't add anything helpful, but can't wait to see where this leads!

Full .. yeah .. I'll lyk what I found tonight. If I can't find anything in my store run .. I'll order online.

Step .. hopefuly, I won't disapoint you! ;) hehe

Small update .. I've got nothing to show for you guys ... I'm getting on the depressed side with this .. I got the foam rolls and all my material to build this .. but the foam is just too soft to build anything that would keep its shape .. so I'm kinda stuck!

I did all kinds of test to build different parts of it, the elbow part, the face mask and the hands ..

plus the fact that it's very organic - read a lot of curved shapes - so the really useful thing would be to have some kind of 3D program an an unfolder - read peparuka but I obsviously don't have time to do this ...

So .. I'm thinking or reselling that foam and moving onto an old costume for this year! Oh well!

With time, I'm 100% sure I would have done a good job .. but now, I can't see that being possible with the level of accuracy I was aiming at!!!

;)

Wow! Nice back handed compliment! Just trying to get you motivated AND give you some ideas of what has been done before you!

Go for the low hanging fruit first!

- Mask
- Staff
- Gloves

That should inspire you to get it ready for your Alice In Wonderland Oscar Party!

Sell the foam and try getting a red pleather. It comes in different thicknesses so you can feel it and decide what thickness is best for holding it's structure. It will probably look better than foam too!

I don't agree... red pleather will not give you the look seen on the reference image. It's actually much closer to foam (since it look more matte than "glossy").

Hey Bigturc - if you think you still have it in you to get this rolling, I can tell you how to give foam a lot more strenght/structure. In that departement hot glue is your friend. What I usually do on all my costumes built with foam is I always glue a second layer of foam (I usually use the cheap dollar store 2mm foamies for this) on the inside. The trick is using a "good" amount of hot glue and making sure it's covering most of the surface of your costume.

Kinda like using fiberglass mats on the inside of a pepakura you've just resined.

Using this process with foam will give it structure, will make it keep a certain shape/curve/etc. and will make it all around easier to work with.

Last thing... to get more complex form out of foam - read round shapes/curves - then you have to heat the foam (heat gun) and then shape it on something that's got the shape you're trying to replicate. Let it cool down on the shape and it will keep that shape.

A lot of good ideas .. I like the hot glue trick a lot .. might try it on the mask I had begun! I'll give that a try tonight .. I mean .. worst case I don't have time to finish it .. maybe for next year!

Damn, I don't even know what pleather is .. I'll google it up later! ;)

I'll try to upload pics of where I am at this point!! Which is close to 0! :)

I'm interested in making this as well. Any larger screenshots of the back pattern? Its really intricate and I really want to get it right.

@Bigturc - he's not from therpf. He uses the same foam as we do.

c'mon guys i don't think you need to pep this. It's just big pieces of squares glued together.

It's like get a long sheet of paper and fold it in half but leave the middle fold round in shape. then add the square pieces in front and back then the details. it's as simple as that. You can make this in cardboard if it would help since it is a card soldier anyway.
You can build this in 1 or 2 days if you seriously take it. ;)

Izabel, this comment made me laugh.
It just confirms you guys down in Philippines just have longer days than us... or you just don't have to sleep :)

I - for one - know I couldn't pull this off in 1 or 2 days.

:lol of course we do not have 25 hours. amf. and we do sleep

its just that if you're freelance and have nothing else to do, with complete materials you can finish it in 2 days. HAHAHA! maybe we're just crazy here...

FMS, take a vacation here for 1 month...we'll make you a costume in 1-2 weeks. ;) hahaha!
