AlClad o.k. with Krylon fusion?

I'm thinking about using Krylon gloss black fusion as the undercoat for some AlClad metalic paints. Does anyone know if these two will work together without causing a bad reaction?

I know everyone recommends Tamiya gloss black, but I've only got one tiny rattle can of the stuff, not enough to do all the things I have waiting.

I thought that the black undercoat for Alclad had to be an acrylic? I know Alclad is a lacquer. It's been a while since I used it.

You could always test it on a small piece of scrap. That's what I did when I used it. Like you, I figured gloss black is gloss black and used a rattle can. It worked. Might've lucked out with the chemical makeup, but I did test first. :)

We use Alclad a lot for prototypes here at work and I've sprayed it over all types of gloss black paint and various clear coats. I know they label it as laquer but I'm not too sure about that. Alclad is basically neutral and if anything it's heavily alcohol based.

Alclad's proprietary gloss black basecoat is a lacquer. But you can use any gloss black for the undercoat.

All the black does is add a layer of depth. It's like the black backing on a mirror, it's what adds the reflectivity. Which is why you only need the black for the chrome paint. On other colors, it makes no difference.

All clear coats will end up dulling the final finish. Has something to do with the way the paint particles lay in reflecting the light and the clear coats interfering with that reflectivity.

We use clear coats over the black (before the alclad) to smoothen out the surface. Sanding works too (super fine grit) but that takes forever and unless the surface is high gloss...it won't look like chrome after Alclad is sprayed. Fred is right, anything sprayed over the Alclad dulls it.

Spray it and then wear white cotton gloves.

I've "heard" you can seal it with future floor wax. But the results seem mixed.

I've also heard AlClad dries just fine and can be touched and you don't have to use a sealer.

Man, I wish it's use was a little more clear.

Others have already chimed in here but I'll add my two cents.

I've used Alclad over Rustoleum gloss black and it looked great.... until I sealed it with clear coat(Dullsville). Just give your gloss black base coat time to fully cure to minimize any chance of a reaction.

Does anyone know if wetsanding (and/or) buff polishing the clear coat after it is dry will do anything to bring back the shine, or does the dullness occur at the surface where the chrome and clear meet?

The dullness occurs where the clearcoat meets the metallic paint.

Wetsanding will make it worse and buffing has no effect.
