Age of Ultron Captain America shield handles

Interesting. I don't ride anymore, but can you tell me, could the spring tension be dialed back enough on pedal clips like these so that you could release the cleat from the clip, rather than just tearing the clip or cleat off your shield or forearm?

I'm worried that the release tension would be so strong that the clip and cleat will stay together with more strength than any mounting material could secure each to the shield and gauntlet.

I like the look of the Shimano PD-A530 SPD pedals. The underside is flat and the clip sticks up nicely. The low price I found was $35 for a set of two.

You could grind off a ton of superfluous material.

I also discovered that Shimano makes two kinds of cleats, one of which can uncouple from the clip in a lot more directions than the other, so it pays to make sure which type you get.

Would this possibly work? One could lock in the upper forearm first, and then the back of the hand. To uncouple, I see it working like this; torque your wrist toward your little finger to release the cleat from the clip. Holding the shield with your opposite hand, rotate the shield to torgue it of the upper foerarm clip.

Can it work?

Someone mentioned in this thread or another about using bicycle pedal type clips. Being a cyclist myself and knowing how easy and sturdy spd clips are, I really believe that's how this shield is supposed to function. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ngSBfLgKhA go to about 3:46 to see the mechanics. The shield looks to use the same principle.

The design also looks to be ambidextrous with the appropriate handle folding out depending on whether you are left or right handed and minimally the forearm section "clipping in" for stabilization.

EDIT: Maybe the one on the back of the hand is for quick acquisition and the handle is meant to fold out if you want a more solid control of the shield

More screen caps for what every they're worth to anyone who can make more sense of them than I can. Wish the quality were better! BOY do I wish the quality were better.

I'd presumed if magnets were to be used in a replica that it would be Rare Earth Magnets (AKA Neodymium). They're inexpensive, readily available, come in a variety of shapes, and as far as I know, are the strongest magnets, pound for pound, that there are. So they pack a strong punch while staying as compact as possible.

I know they've been successfully used by some RPF'ers to make a system for mounting Cap's shield on one's back. So I presume they ought to work to secure the shield to the forearm and hand just as well.

Here's a resource.

I modeled and printed the arm magnets for Phizzle Cosplay a month or two ago, although we didn't have anywhere near these many reference images so we had to go off set photos:

Finished Magnets (we molded and cast them from rubber so they'd attach to the gauntlets better:

Maybe we should take another crack at them and see if we can get them to glow like in the trailer? Or would you guys rather go the practical route with magnets?

The hot toys shield, while being far and away the most accurate reference for a toy, has a couple of differences from our screen grabs. The brackets are too centered and symmetrical, And the new handles are too thick. In the captures from footage, one bracket is closer to the center than the other.

Just saw this thread after making my own, been working on this. Here is what I have so far, got the magnetics functioning great - just working on the details now... IMG_4325.JPGIMG_4326.JPGIMG_4327.JPGIMG_4328.JPGIMG_4329.JPGIMG_4330.JPGIMG_4331.JPGIMG_4332.JPG

Now that the movie is out in most places, does anyone have any new observations about the new shield brackets?

If your post is plot related, it might still be considerate to preface it with a spoiler warning.

Like this: SPOILER

Yes, I mean it. SPOILER.

Well, of a sort. I was disappointed that the new system wasn't specifically addressed by a mention of why it was done, and how it works.

Cap, in the early Avengers comics used a magnetic retrieval system created by Tony Stark, but abandoned it after less than a year with it. (I found these in an article on-line)

Cap adopts the Shield magnets in July 1964 (Avengers issue #6).

And Cap abandons the Shield magnets in February 1965 (Tales of Suspense 62).

Well, THAT didn't last long. First shots from Captain America: Civil War shows that Cap's shield has the leather straps back and his arm and glove have no hard mount points.

May be since he will be on not so good terms with Stark in this movie, he refuses to use any of the latter's tech?

Either way anyone modding their shield for Age of Ultron might as well keep it as it is. He's in the same costume too minus a few color variations. I guess they decided to stick with that one for this movie instead of changing the entire outfit.

Haven't been on this thread in a while. Seeing some cool stuff in the works here.

The Civil War shield appears to be a new leather handle design. Not sure if it's still magnetic or not. The gloves and forearms no longer seem to have the magnetic pieces, but the gloves still have the same shape on them as the magnetic gauntlet pieces did in AOU. Hmmmmmm...

I have this feeling that the leather straps you see aren't really canon to the in-universe pseudo-magnetic connection points, but probably a good sturdy way to hang onto the shield for the purposes of filming an action scene so the shield doesn't just fly off all willy nilly. I bet the shots of Cap with the straps are either behind the scenes shots or just unfortunate camera angles.

Then again, we all know that Cap's a big proponent of "tried and true" methods. Perhaps the magnetic shield holders were a temporary experiment to amuse Tony and he decided to go back to what he knows best.

In the Debut of the most famous uniform Tony Stark had magnetic tights that automatically attached themselves to the main part of his suit. It would make sense for him to do such a thing.
