Advices for weathering crates based on planet

Hi,
I’m about to do my first paint wash for weathering a crate. I was just wondering if you would weather with another color than black if the crates was supposed to be out in the weather on tatooine ?

First sand edges for a worn look. Beat up the wood a bit to give it a used and old look. Brush this stuff on the wood and it will instantly age it to a weathered gray. Then, after drying, do some dry brushed darker dirty coloring on edges. Then dust it with some Fuller’s Earth and wipe the excess off but leave dust in crevices

Thanks. Sorry for the confusion, the crate is not wood. It’s pelican case style crate/case.
So I was just wondering if for a desert planet brown is more appropriate for weathering than black.

Ah, gotcha. Sorry I assumed it was wood. Lol

I would look at pix and try to match what you see.
Tans, Lt Browns, etc.

Washes in the corners and dusting on top to simulate settled dirt.

Some of the crates in the movie also look like they did something like the ink sprayed with alcohol technique. It leaves little bubbles that pop and looks like some chemical interacted with something on the surface. Also think about where this crate would be. If it's in a mechanic's shop it might have lubricants on it.

If the case was on a planet with 2 suns, and no moisture, then the box would be heavily faded or yellowed, and if it was painted, a lot of the paint would be blasted off. The dust from the sand would be in the crevasses. A plastic case would probably be cracked or broken in places, depending on how long it was in that environment. If the case was used often, it would most likely have been repainted and repaired several times, leaving somewhat of a patchwork of faded paint all over...lettering half obscured or worn.

I can't see the video but thanks for the idea. And indeed it would be in a mechanic's shop. So lubricant splash is somthing I will keep in mind. Thanks !

Thanks. Living in southern califormia next to a sand arena, I may be able to get some of that weathering by just leaving the crate outside for a couple of months

Looks pretty good! I don't know if you're done, but I would do some silver drybrushing on the latches/hinges and maybe even some rust. It's all depends on your idea of the age it's supposed to be, wear it was sitting/stored, etc.

I'd also add some major oil spills, like 1-3 per side going down. You can see a lot of these on OT props found on Tatooine. To do this, thin out some oil paint using odorless thinner or mineral spirits, then pool it on the edge and let it fall down naturally.

Thanks ! I'm trying to figure out if I'm done , if the brown/black on the side is strong enough. About the silver on the latches hinges. Do you have an exemple of what I should try to reach ?

It's kind of what I tried to do on the side, but I just did a oil paint wash with water mixable oil paint. Maybe I need to not dilute the paint as much ? Will the thiner or mineral spirit make it look moir oily ? It's kind of hard to see the dark colors on that dark green.

It needs to be thin enough to flow but still pretty opaque, plus you need to make a single stream on one single point. The side of your crate is too evenly weathered and it looks artificial as a result.

Also, keep giving it more applications using other techniques, like a sludge wash or sponging on paint chips and such.

as it was oil and not dry yet I tried to remove some to make it less even. Should I keep removing or just leave it and add the oil spill and other stuff? based on those pictures where would you add the oil spill ? Thanks so much. ALso teh paint ships I have on it are from droping the crate a few times on concreate. So they are real. But do you suggest puting some black on those to make them pop more ?
This is the first time I do soemthing like that so any help is appreciated !

So this is what I ended up with. It now has a functioning locking mechanism with a lock-picking sequence inspired from SW outlaws.
