ABC Lifesize head from scratch...

there's a few ABC warrior threads on this board, when you look at them all together it's a great resource. I am very tempted to have a go at making one.

I really like the cardboard approach of building 'frames' or silouettes to get the dimensions right then filling in the gaps. I'd be tempted to use 20mm mdf and use the same approach.

Sir Round apart from time can you remember what were the main challenges on this build?

The main challenge is the head itself. I got the lower jaw pretty much done.

Other than that, it took a lot of time, looking at it from different angles and comparing it to reference and adjusting accordingly.

Mdf will work well. I choose balsa because I could cut that as cardboard and in the end sand it like regular wood or filler. I didn't trash the project though. There's still hope! LOL.

how accurate do you think the golden armour head is? It would be a great start to a build but yeah I think I would prefer to make my own. Even if you lose accuracy it's something hand made and that rocks!

The GA is taken from a studio mold. He offers a reworked version now, from pics it looks promising. You can't get any more accurate on measurements.

nice! There' some reasonable pics on that site which would give me some good proportions to work on. Especially all those pistons.

The idea I am toying around with is a Judge Dredd style ABC warrior but with a bit more of the comic elements in it.

So it would be the basic film prop but with a helmet (removable?) and maybe a hammer instead of a hand (one less hand to make). I would also look to make more body armour. The film prop looks amazing but there's too many exposed cables. To me it looks like a stripped down version of an ABC warrior. That works in terms of the film and the fact that it's a antique.

The arms and legs look like they could be largely left/ right generic.

Do you know anywhere that has a set of dimensions? Anything would do :)

yeah I saw that in this thread. it's a really good way to go. Sir- round how did you decide the overall size of the head? You started with the jaw piece; what made you decide on the measurements you used?

It's been a while... I decided again based on the model kit, combined with reference photo's. Can't make any more of it, sorry. I think I'm not that far off...

I bought one of the kits from GA. It's in storage at the moment so I can't grab pix, but it's really not going to require much clean-up, if any at all! The details (especially the side greeblies) are fantastic, and the kit had been re-tooled to get the eyes and some other details closer to screen accurate.

I know he's gotten a really bad rep here, but apparently the past is not the present. Cristofer was really cool to deal with, honored an earlier price (it had increased $30 from the time I inquired about it to when I ordered), and tossed in free shipping. The kit is really crisp; it's not a recast; it's from molds purchased from a member here, IIRC.

If you're thinking about getting the kit, I'd say go for the "plain" one and add your own electronics.

Cheers... About his rep. Yes, he sold bad castings in the past, but as I said, new reworked looks good, so now it's confirmed.
