SLOW Moire ??

Just got my Entertainment Earth version (shiny lid, extra voice) and overall it looks pretty cool -- in some ways I like the feel and look better than the Vegas version.

The moire did not work out of the box -- so I took it apart and it seems like maybe some of the screws were too tight...the moire started moving and when I put it back together I was sure NOT to overtighten the screws but stil made sure the two body halves were secure enough when I put the back cover plate on.

When compared to the VEGAS version, the moire on my Art Asylum one spins much more slowly than the vegas -- maybe not twice as slow, but noticably slower. I checked the gears and pout in a fresh pair of batteries -- this did not affect it one way or the other.

Has anyone else with BOTH the Vegas and the Art Asylum version noticed this? I am debating whether I should send it back for a replacement, but I don't want to do this if a slower moving moire is standard operating procedure for this AA comm.

I tried watching the videos posted to YOUTUBE of the AA one in action, and it is sort of hard to tell -- it LOOKS like they are also moving more slowly than the Vegas version.

Any feedback appreciated...I have two standard AAs on order from BigBad ToyStore, so I guess I could wait and compare to them, but no idea when I'll get those (I preordered a while back and have yet to receive a shipping notice from them) -- and I don't want to wait TOO long should I decide I want to return my EE version for a replacement as I imagine they need returns done within a certain time frame.

The slower moire isn't overly troublesome, but if mine is abnormally slow I don't mind sending it back.

By the way, the motor on my EE/AA version is quiet...perhaps more so than the Vegas version.

AA moire is definitely much slower than the Vegas.

The appearance of the moire in the AA is dim and murky, but if you can mount the two discs closer together (see earlier in the thread) you can get better results without replacing the entire moire (which works too).

The motor in the Vegas is much quieter and smoother however (I have one from the first run, I heard that later Vegas comms are louder).

Thanks for input, guys. It's great to have this forum to get such quick feedback.

I'm not sure if it's 2 RPM, John - I'll have to time it...but now that I look at the Vegas comm, the Vegas comm DOES seem to be spinning a bit too fast compared to the screen-used props.

Of course, I realize in the end that, to quote Woody from Toy Story -- "It's just a TOY!!" And, being such, I should likely not be so worrisome about this detail. But then again, I think, "hey, I just dropped 30 bucks on this -- let's make sure it works!"

Thanks again for everyone who responded -- and to those who provided reviews, photos and YouTube videos.

Oh yeah -- and John -- looking forward to your licensed comm kit!!!! As if you didn't already know.

I got mine today from Entertainment Earth and I'm a bit upset. When I push the A button to signal red alert, then close it, I don't get the hailing signal and subsequent Spock sample. Anyone else have this problem? I wonder if I should send it back!?

Does it have a shiny grid?

And, although I'm sure you did -- just double check to make sure you removed the TRY ME tab on the side.

If it still doesn't work after that, you will likely wanna send it back for one that works.

It does take the comm a little while before it sends the hailing signal -- probaby about 10 to 15 seconds.

All the other sounds were working just fine. Anyway, I put it down for a few hours, came back and now it does the hailing call as it should. Then one time it did the hailing call, the moire disk didn't spin... tried it again, then it did spin. I guess that's what you can expect for a $30 prop.

Nah, send it back. Sounds like you got a lemon.

I wouldn't knock it b/c of the price. I know people who've spent 100's if not 1000's for products that have either come from the factory screwed up or got banged up during shipping.

Just contact the company you got it from... hopefully they won't mess you up with shipping.

Just to clarify, the red light IS flashing when you close the communciator, correct? That's the only way you'll get the hailing beep.

Yes. It's odd, when I first got it, it would not work. Then after a few hours it works every time. I think I'll open it and put some silicone or WD40 on the motor because as stated earlier, it's noisy.

Oh, and I got the AA Phaser, too. Great pair for the money!

I started a few mods last night.......added some t-jet hubs on the bottom 2 controls, what a difference jut they made! Next I will add train wheels and jewels.....already removed the cheesy plastic lights.....I think that is all I will do!? just a little fun!
Buttons are still functional, cut off the top of originals and glued these into place!! :love

Unlike what I stated earlier, I did not mistakenly have the exclusive version. It did not have the extra sound. But, due to this board, it does now. I just took the dremel and cut through the center of the solder. Great! It was relatively easy to do, and the communicater was simple to open and put back together (aside from a washer in the outer shell that got in the way while putting it back together, so I removed it). I think I will cut out the speaker grill and replace it with some mesh from the hobby store. The gem lights and buttons may need to be replaced as well, only because it looks so easy.

Thanks for all the tips guys!

I'm about to order mine, which would be better the regular version or the exclusive w/ gold plated lid? I can make the mod for the sound, so its not a big deal other than lids.

wow, the hubs do make a huge difference.
