A Darth Vader Collection and Lineage Thread....

Vader threads are pretty rare in these parts, so for old time's sake I thought I'd show some mask/dome combos from my collection. Since I (finally) got my SL copy, and the gelcoat matches my other masks more closely than the SL master, I did some mixing and matching with the inevitable comparisons. On the left is the SL ANH mask/dome combo and on the right the new DS 20th Century mask with SL dome. More to come...

Curious, which is the more accurate? And would you have any more pics? Higher rez? I have a Vader lid (ANH) and would like to mod it to be more accurate.
By the way nice lids always like ANH lids better than the others.

You need to get yourself some paint and go to twon on those castings.
That SL is a very sharp looking piece.

Those are both raw, unfinished and unpainted fiberglass. No lenses, mesh, paint- nothing. Both of them still need the fiberglass eye plugs cut out so lenses can be added.

Here are two more...SL vs TD...

TD vs DS 20th C...

The thing that always interested me about the TD was that its face is more symmetrical. You see that also on the DS 20th C which is actually quite closely related to the TD. The original ANH mask was molded at least twice, once in the UK (with tabs on) and once in the US (with tabs removed). The TD and DS 20th C are on the UK branch of the family tree, as are the ESB masks. The VP ANH as well is part of that tree. The SL is from the US mold branch of the tree, as is the MP (that ESB movie poster helmet) and the DJ (Darth Jones) ANH. Part of my hobby is to understand the relationships between these castings.

Well, I don't compare the SL and TD in terms of accuracy since they represent castings from the original ANH taken at different times. Yes, I'm sure many would like to see high resolution images of these. I have my reasons for not showing every angle at high res, but good to hear you are working on your own ANH helmet...

Yep. The DS eyes are not cut out and what you are seeing is texture in the filler material he used. I'm a big fan of raw castings...

There are good resources out there if you like to learn more about the abbreviations and the different fan castings...including www.starwarshelmets.com and The Prop Den...or of course you are free to ask here too...

I like the DS 20th C/ SL combo the most.

Great to see, Thomas. It would be interesting to see an illustrated tree similar to the Fett one, even if it is a tentative one.

A Vader helmet chart is gonna be messy... and there are so many more Vader helmets than there are Fett helmets.

Ya, something like that. You have the benefit of having the images contributed to that helmet thread on TPD. If I would have permission to use those images to make a tree, I could, otherwise I'll just use what I have from various sources. There are quite a few things I would organize differently.

Odd that you have the MP leading to the DJ and SL? Is that supposed to represent time? Those three came from the same mold (DJ and SL for sure, MP is my guess), so they would branch from one point, but at different times. On a lineage tree, the branches denote lineage and the branch lengths can denote time....plus you have things starting and stopping whereas a lineage is continuous.

I'm not finished. The lines will make sense once I've added them all. The MP doesn't lead to anything... it is simply a helmet along the tree line similar to the SL & DJ - I just moved some of the fan helmets down onto the same line to keep things organized while working on the list.
