5 Mortal Kombat 9 Masks (WIP)

awesome work sir. true inspiration.
Thank you very much! :D

Bit of an update for today. I did some work on scorpions belt and actually have it about 80% finished but Can't show progress pics unfortunately.. My friend had to borrow the camera for the day to go to a linkin park concert so I only got 2 pictures before he came to get the camera this morning.

I copied the pattern I created onto the foam and cut it out. Then, to give it a rough texture and leather/rino lining look I used the heat gun to burn the surface of the foam. Once done it looks GREAT and I could see this helping on other builds too! It save from having to paint it black and it gives a nice texture.

Here are the two pics I've got. One of the pics shows all the main pieces of the belt lined up before assembly and the other pic shows a little closer detail that the burning causes. Hopefully I can get the camera back soon so I can take some up to date pics...

Love the balaclava work and the gauntlets etc......
Not sure on the costume part yet, need to see it a little more finished and with the armour I'm sure it will look awesome but at the minute I can't really tell.... I dunno if it's the material that doesn't do it for me but everything else is fantastic mate, keep up the great work

Thanks :)

I was thinking the same thing about the material when I started but since I've test fit it a time or two I have grown to like it. The big accomplishment is that The gold satin and the gold I'm paint the parts with are EXACT which was something I was kind of winging and ended up working out for me..lol.

Only down side is, I'm out of the gold paint and now must pay around $12 for another can because it's not sold locally anymore...hello shipping costs!

I've got some more work on the belt today. Progress is moving right along, I just can't wait to have the camera back to take some more pics! Tomorrow I hope to finish the belt (minus paint) and start working on the buckle.

Happy building, I'm off to bed. 5am gets here quick!

hey man im working on the scorpion mask now, but i didnt scale it up and the tabs are really small, did you scale yours differently from the original?

Thanks, I'm trying my best at these costumes ;)

Yes, but there are a bunch of small tabs on scorpions mask even when scaled correctly. I don't recommend it for someone who doesn't have a lot of experience building harder models with pepakura because it can become confusing even to the best of us.

im not new to pepakura, just the rpf, ive been on the 405th for about 2-3 years now, i left it orginal scale which is roughly 4.17 by 5.2 by 5 so i think it should fit, just wanted to know what scale you used

Same here, I've got the same build thread going on over there too..lol. I couldn't tell you what scale I used though, I didn't save it. I just printed and went with it, sorry :(

Finally got a hold of a camera. Still didn't get the other one back so I borrowed the neighbors.

Also, I was trying to figure out how to make the "spikes" on the belt and this is the meathod I came up with(i'm sure it's been done before but it's new to me..lol).

First I did a rough sculpt in sculpey and baked it. The created a negative with some more and baked it too. After that I was left with a press mold.

All I did was hit the foam with a heatgun to make it pliable and then smashed it between the mold pieces and after about 10 seconds I had some nice spikes to glue onto the belt!

Here's a few pics I took today. The belt is pretty close to finished in construction, Just the buckle to go then I can start painting it!

And here's a reference pic of the belt design:

I know the belt design is far from perfect but it's the best thing I could think of doing and still keeping it able to flex around the body.

Well, Small update for now. I finally got the belt assembly finished and it was ready for paint so brushed on some white base to prime it for the metallics. Then Got the silver painted on the buckle and spikes. Now I just need to pick up some gold to finish it.

Reference pic of the buckle:

Mine's a little more oval that I would like but didn't notice until it was too late so I'm just going with it...

Thanks for looking, Comments always appreciated :thumbsup

Update: I was finally able to get a hold of some much needed gold paint and a rivet gun so I was able to finish both the belt and gauntlets/bracers over the past 24 hours. I've started on the shin plates now..getting close to the finish line for the scorpion costume!

I know the bracers don't have much detail on them but they were my first foam building experience. I won't be changing them so that I can stay on schedule but for the record..I know they could have turned out a lot better..

Dude, you're doing a great job! I'm working on a Scorpion and Cyrax costume myself, for a MK Costuming group I started. When you release the files for the shoulders and gauntlets let me know, I'd love to have them!

Thanks guys! :D

Update: I got to work on the shin guards today. Would have had both finished but I ran out of gold paint yet again so I need to pick some more up sometime this week if I'm lucky and then finish the other shin piece. After that I just need to mod a pair of shoes to match and sew the shirt and pants!

Spikes are a little thinner than they should be but I'm still very happy with them.

Update: Got the bracers and shins finished today! :D I remodeled the skulls on the bracers with some scratch foam building to make them a bit more "3d".

Edit: Added better pics.

Update: I got to thinking about the swords today and figured I could make some less detailed ones for the time being. This way, If I can't get the funds in time for the casting supplies I atleast have SOMETHING to fill the spot..lol.

Anyways, I made a handle out of eva and here's how it turned out. Tomorrow I'll be making the other sword and the holster for them.

Also, Here's a better quality photo showing the spear along with the sword, wrist and shin pieces finished.

Thanks for looking and please feel free to comment. The feedback is greatly appreciated! :D
