3D printed Robocop suit 1987 build- COMPLETE

Wow! This is fantastic. I really wanted to build my own costume and go find a halloween party. I came across this forum post and saw the date and thought "nah, he's not still be going at it after all this time" and here you are still going strong. It looks amazing, and I really hope you get to wear it this year. Definitely makes me want to try it; first I need to get to grips with 3D printing, seeing as I've never done it before lololol

That suit, is incredible. Can i Ask.....rough estimate....

how many hours you put into that, and total cost you guess?

Totally worth it IMO.

Thank you sir for the kind words. I'm not really sure on hours but I know it took me about 2 years altogether to finish it. There were some short breaks in between all the work due to weather and moving to a different location but not much. I do know that it took countless hours to get it done, there was numerous days of working on the suit for 5-8 hours at a time mostly due to the many modifications I did to the suit. Estimated cost between filament and clean up materials probably somewhere around $500.00 maybe a little more but something around there.

$500, you wouldnt be able to buy the helmet for that, so all things considered, a total steal.

Very nice job. One of my all time favourite films and not many people around with a Robocop suit!

I completely understand the feeling. To be honest when I first started the project I didn't have the slightest clue about 3D printing. I stumbled across Do3d's Robocop models and thought they were half decent and already having a little experience in prop building figured I could put some polish on it and make it much better. I wouldn't worry about not knowing anything about 3D printing there is plenty of wealthy information on youtube and printer forums that mostly anyone can figure it out if your determinated enough. Just expect a lot of work! :)

Ahhh well that's good to know then about the 3D printing lol, it's something that's fascinated me but it's only very recently that prices have started to get better for a functioning printer.

I don't mind how much hard work it will be, RoboCop is my all time favourite movie - to the point that when I watched that 2014 pile of crap I had to walk out of the cinema lolol

printers, you see them dotted around, some for reasonable money, some astronomical money....but where do you draw the line, what is a reasonable budget for a functioning basic printer that will output stuff like that?!

For what I think your looking for $300.00 is a good budget for a printer that will do the job. Creality makes some really good stuff in that budget. I have an original Creality CR-10 that still works like a champ and is stock everything. For my Robocop suit I purchased a Qidi printer that was around the 600 dollar mark but back around 2016 that was a fairly good price.

Ive seen one on Aldi, people rave about. Its around the $300 mark, £240 or so. Apparently very good. I saw the Creality ones, so i guess its whatever i can blag the Mrs for Christmas....

Hi, I have been following this post for ages now and, like everyone here, I'm in awe of your dedication, skill and determination. I recently purchased the D03D files myself. I have a couple of questions that perhaps those that have purchased these files could perhaps answer.

I have not yet decided I I will build for display or build for CosPlay. I know that for a fully wearable suit I would definitely need to do some major re-scaling as I'm one of lifes vertically challenged people (5ft 9inch approx) - however here are some Qs that i have:

1. Are the included D03D files all of a similar uniform scale i.e. if I were to reduce one file/piece by 2%, could that easily apply to all pieces?
2. Does anyone have any suggested 3D print settings regards: Wall thickness, Layer Height, In-Fill settings etc.
3. I seem to have accurate and up-to-date files except... I don't seem to have a "posed-and-scaled-stl-file" for the "shin-right" file. Having checked both left shin files the only different (apart from the file size) is that the larger file includes the separate piston model already included in the model.

Here are the (non-piston) shin files that I have:
shin-left-robocop-1987-full-body-3d-printable-by-do3d @ 8,075KB
shin-left-robocop-1987-full-body-3d-printable-by-do3d-posed-and-scaled-stl-files @ 24,513KB
shin-right-robocop-1987-full-body-3d-printable-by-do3d @ 8,075KB

I would have expected that the shin-right file would come in two variants just like the shin-left did. Is this what other people have too or should I contact D03D for a "shin-right-robocop-1987-full-body-3d-printable-by-do3d-posed-and-scaled-stl-file"? Checking in FreeCAD the length appears to be the same at approx 50cm.

Hello sir and thanks for the comment. I'll try to answer your questions the best I can but its been awhile since I've done this project and I don't really remember a whole lot. The suit is definitely made for someone in the 6ft range so keep that in mind when scaling, I'm not really sure if 2% would be enough you'll have to convert the measurements yourself to find out what will and wont fit you. All I remember having to scale was the abs and shins. The abs seem to have been scaled for a 6ft super model so I had to do quite a bit of scaling to fit a 34 inch waist.

I don't have any suggested print settings. To be honest I used the most basic settings in Simplify3D for the Qidi 3D printer profile back in 2016 when I started, if I were to start over I would probably use my Creality CR-10 also with the most basic settings in Simplify3D. I do recommend using Simplify3D as it does make things super simple. I used Hatchbox PLA filament for the majority of my build and it worked great! I highly recommend. When your doing research you'll soon realize that some people like to complicate things and treat 3D printing like it's scientific......it really isn't. There is some really good information to be learned though you'll just have to pick the good from the bad.

For the shins i have the file that has the older more inaccurate piston attached to it. I had them revise the pistons for me and make more accurate versions. I used Meshmixer which was free to seperate the pistons from the shins. You'll also have to use some software like Netfabb free to cut up the large pieces i.e. the chest, arms, etc...into smaller pieces to make it more printable.

I hope that helps you a little.

This build has definitely been my inspiration to start my build. I’ve bought the latest files and printing will start soon.

I wonder if I could trouble you with a couple of questions?

What strapping system/method did you go for?

Would you recommend casting some of the pieces in urethane? Chin piece, ab section, gloves, boots etc?

many thanks in advance and congratulations on a phenomenal build

Thank you. I used webbing and buttons for the pieces to hang off. The webbing I get from Joannes craft store along with the buttons. I do recommend cast the midsection/cod in either urethane or silicone. With my new build I plan on molding mine with dragon skin silicone and also casting it with silicone.

Very cool work. The reason why I found this was because I just purchased a 1/3 scale RoboCop but it needs a lot of work to get looking right. So I was having a search for any 3D files that might be around just to reprint the odd bit to get up it up to scratch.
