I see some red underneath the tip that's not there on the CO (a light?), and they've filled the black neck grooves with silver. Is that tip a sphere or bullet shape? Can't tell...

I like it! The more I see these blue-painted emitters, the more tempted I get to pull mine off and re-do it! What kind of paint did you use on yours!
Thank you! I used some testors enamel from a starter pack from Wal-Mart. Mixed it with a little water, brushed it on then gently wiped it off. I did this a few times until I got the look I wanted.

I think this is a re-jiggered CO toy without the ring and a black bulb at the end that will probably light up.
I originally thought it looked like the bullet from the 8th sonic, but it may be too big for that. It looks like of oblong but I think it's just the way it was photographed and it's actually a sphere.
It's... interesting, I guess. Kind of a missing link between the old screwdrivers and the new ones.

It's sad that John Hurts sonic screwdriver isn't anywhere near as interesting or cool as the Design A Sonic competetion last year. There were some very interesting "transition" sonic screwdrivers, this one is lame. It's a barely modified Character Options fourth Doctor sonic screwdriver. Probably ten minutes after it airs a fan will have a conversion tutorial on this site. I hope they don't think they'll make a fortune selling that prop toy!!!

WAIT. That's not a black sphere on the end. It's a coat button.

Thought I'd give you time to work that one out. ;p

I agree, a more original prop would have been nice. That said, it may not have been worth the cost/time. The prop department would have had a lot to do and probably not very much time to do it, and budget isn't infinite. I should imagine the electronics were gutted and replaced.

It's still a nice throwback to the original run. It's a shame that they did at least add a bit of light weathering to match Hurt's costume more.

ACK. I briefly thought of that but since I couldn't see a corresponding button on the other side of his jacket, I thought it must be a part of the sonic. And I didn't think they'd really just cut the end off the toy and call it a day.
Dang. I guess now it has elements of the Second and Fourth Doctors sonics. (trying to stay positive!)

So the prop really is simply the 4th toy with the end cut off, and hollowed out for a red light. And the red button on the other end. Should be fun and easy to make :)

There's an even larger view here (not embedding since it's his photo):

It?s almost here ? Doctor Who?s 50th Anniversary. | PurpleBlancmange

So...battle damaged sonic, perhaps? I would imagine an overloaded sonic (wiping out the Timelords may have that effect) would look like that after the head exploded. Just a thought...

Haha, yeah. I think my brain was 100% expecting to see something on the end of the sonic handle, because that's just how they are, and so interpreted it that way.

So judging from my CO sonic and the closeup from PurpleBlancmange, the glowy bit looks to be around 7mm in diameter. Possibly dome shaped like a standard LED? Clear, possibly tinted red? That or it's lit, but Hurt is not retracting the slider (another switch added? the hand position makes it look unlikely he is pressing the one on the butt). Or the red is photoshopped on.

Oh snap! Paul McGann...and he's rocking the classic sonic from the movie...was kind of hoping he'd have his alternate for the minisode :behave

Yeah, they sort of canonized his audio story companions, but didn't go with his new outfit or sonic from the cover art. I guess there are a few possible explanations - continuity with the TV movie, continuity with War Doctor's sonic, he didn't have it with him to bring to set or they wanted more than one on hand (sounds familiar)... Oh well. I still think the alternate is brilliant :)

I think there's still room for the Alt. 8th sonic and the costume in continuity. The Alt. 8th could have been destroyed and he rebuilt the classic one before he died. And he just changed clothes that morning. Ta-da!
Loved the minisode. Loved seeing McGann again.

Oh... kay... thanks for your opinion. :unsure
Here's a promo shot of McGann in his new costume holding his classic sonic. From what I could see in the minisode and this image, it appears to be made of metal and has the correct tip. I'm not sure if it still has its gold ring near the middle or not. I bet they used the one on display at the Experience.

You know, as beautiful a design as the Alt 8th is and as much as I LOVE it, having built a replica of one has taught me that from a practical standpoint it could have made for a very fragile prop, especially around the emitter...look at how often Matt Smith's got broken over the course of shooting during his tenure! So maybe it was best to have the movie 8th design on screen instead of the alt 8th...the basic design that lasted from Pertwee to McGann was quite robust.

I've always thought the 8 alt looked like rubbish.

I'm with you on that, it's always looked odd and somewhat unwieldy.

The new costume is great, though. It looks like he's been in a war even though he's trying to avoid it. I have a feeling that it would also fit into the Hurt TARDIS well.

I can imagine the little hoses on the crystal popping off all the time and the crystal itself snapping off while in your pocket. I can see the Doctor whipping it out the tip flying across the room.

I finished my Alt. 8th tonight. I added some more oxidization and it came out far too dark, but I'm done with this for now. It does not light up. The button is a plastic BB sanded and shaved down to size. These pictures show the shade of brown on the grips and the crystal much better.

Very nicely done...I really like how your button turned out! I think I'm leaving the emitter on mine as is, though--not worth the risk of breakage, as it's on there pretty solid now...

I wouldn't worry too much about overdoing the oxidation...it gives the prop character, and besides, who knows what sort of exotic Gallifreyan alloys this thing would have been made of in-universe??

My resolve faltered a little with the confirmation that the War Doctor's Sonic is essentially a modded 4th Doctor version, and as I've stated above I see the practicality of sticking with a tried-and-true prop design, but I think that when Doc Octoroc does another run I'm still going to order another Alt 8th and do it up in what I think would be a "War Doctor" color scheme...red emitter, and darker colors to give it a more military bearing...
