Just thinking phil, i might do some "righteous" and "wickedsick" pics of your beast. We shall (if we can) discuss this at your Bday party, which i am looking forward to.

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Hey Chris, some very good news, they have some of the colours, so that's great !
They don't have the reds I need, but he said "tuscan" is close to either the caboose red or the boxcar red..he can't remember which.... Do you know if that would do or not ?

Btw, is rust the colour used on the sandcrawler ? Also, do I need "aged concrete" or just "concrete" ?

Sorry for all the questions..

Thanks a lot

Cheers

Phil

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Hey Phil, the rust is the same for the sandcrawler. I'm not sure on the "tuscan". The colour charts show it close but a little darker. Some others here might know on that one. I do know that "Testors model master insignia red" is fairly spot on to the "boxcar red" and should be easy to get. I'm sure Tamiya has one close also. You need "concrete". Hope that helps you.

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

So Blokes and Blokettes, another small update...you saw the grey primer pics earlier, so after that I did this...

bellypreshadesml.jpg

However..this was a big mistake,, because, I got hold of some of the floquil paint after I did this preshade, and it turns out the floquil is very thin and can be airbrushed straight from the bottle. So even though the grey primer doesn't look very dark on the pic,.. it's darker in real life btw, ...it was a pig to cover, and I used half a jar just to cover the smaller parts of the model. I didn't even start to do the main ship. I realised that I wouldn't have enough to do the whole thing with the one and a half jars I had left...what a balls up !
So, Back to the garage, and out with the white primer, and this was the result..
toprepaintwhitesml.jpg

It ended up being a very light grey in fact, but much easier to cover with the main colour now..

After that I mixed up some tamiya paint to match as close as I could to the floquil grime. I fired this mix at everything so hopefully the grime will go on over it easily, and I'll have the real base colour on there to start the next stage..
pic below has just the tamiya mix and a bit of weathered black in the pits and the engine vents..no grime on it yet..
toptamiya1stcoatsml.jpg

I was surprised how light a shade the grime is though, I was expecting it to be more of a light gull grey kind of colour, but it's more a very slightly dirty white...if MR lightened it up for their model it seems a bit odd, it's very light already...

Anyhoo, I managed to get all the floquil colours apart from boxcar red and reefer grey...I reckon I can mix the boxcar from the caboose red with a bit of rust added, and I'm sure I can knock up a tamiya mix for the reefer grey. Looooonnng way to go yet though..

Comments, advice, abuse, laughter, always welcome..:lol

Cheers

All I can say is that this is one of the very best builds of any studio scale model I've ever seen here, and there are a LOT of great builds. The Falcon is one of the harder paint jobs to duplicate, but your attention to detail tells me that it will look great when finished.

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

I must concur with ringa, fantastic attention to detail and second to none. Outstanding job, tk1608!

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

How do you fancy bringing it to Leeds festival on the 28th Aug :)

Its going to look amazing mate, your too far in to get this wrong in any way. Out of interest did you keep a record of your Tamiya mix for the Flo Grime?

If you haven't already I highly recommend Oakly sanding pads from Halfords, 180 & 220 grit. Just wipe em over the base coat before you do anything else and it will give you a perfect finnish to do all the detail painting on. You dont sand with them just smoothes the paint. I wont leave the house with out em these days.

Did I say it looks stunning and and I agree with everything thats been said above. It really is a show stopper.

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Thanks blokes, and thanks Guy for the sanding pad advise, I've never heard of those, but I'll have a look.
Are you kidding about Leeds fest ?, I can't tell..lol...
Is there somewhere to show this stuff off there ?

Cheers

She really does take on a different look once a coat of prime and paint are slapped on. Nice looking work Phil!:thumbsup

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Superlatives fail me , I cant even think of a word to describe this. I would have to resort to nonsense made up words, disconfabulonished, you get the picture. Thank you for sharing

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Lookin good man! Glad to see you're into the painting. Honestly, if your Tamiya mix is a good match I would skip the floquil altogether for the base. The floquil won't make as smooth a finish. Another thing, if you do use the grime, don't use the sanding pads! It will turn a light yellowish color wherever it's abraded. Even just lightly scratching it with your fingernail will make a yellowish streak. When I did some painting on my MR falcon I tried sanding a few places to smooth out the finish and it turned it a very light yellow. Don't know if others have had that same experience, but I have every time I've used it. If you use the floquil it would actually be good to put a flat clear over it to prevent abrading the paint when you start to handle it for the rest of the work.

As for the MR bird, they did approve a 50/50 mix of grime and reefer white; however, all the factory ones were considerably darker than straight grime.:lol Pretty much straight up tan. Never figured that one out.

Nice Bird Phil
Anyone cinsider Humbrol paint? - for my outrider, which I tried to match the Falcon colours, I used a mix of 50/50 flat white and number 128 I think it was. Gave a nice light grey slightly yellowish color and worked fine as a base colour ontop of a flat black Humbrol "primer"
Then I switch to:
Model Color
for the rest.

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Ha Ha, on my tour bus mate, or in the catering tent behind the main stage :)

I was joking but let me know if you want to come along and say high, I have a VIP pass spare for Sunday 28th?

The Oakey pads are an absolute must have mate, dont do any more painting till you've got some, they'll change your life.

Oakey Between Coats Contour Sanding Pads Pack of Two Fine/Medium

Seconded on the Oakey pads, cant say ive used them in anger on any basecoat yet, but i use them between primer coats and its like going back to glass.
Ive seen how they work on Guys A wing though, and the result is just superb.
