32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 23

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Not really, its a very collectable kit for motorsports fans anyway, much like the Eidai Mclaren, and most of the Tamiya 1/12 kits, autosport fans are just as anal as us guys for accuracy!

I'm the one that bought the Entex that just sold on eBay. Unbuilt - worth every penny.

The body and other key parts will sacrifice themselves for my Slave 1.

And my AT-ST. And Snowspeeder.... ahhhh. Styrene!

So are you going to use the original parts or are you going to make moulds and use those? Just curious.

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

My personal build will be styrene - I'm building a second one and that will use Entex castings!

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Guy's I've been doing some panels as you can see...I've used the floquil "primer" colour, It looks not bad on these pics...but to the naked eye it looks too blue in tone.
It's a bit weird, I'm assuming that the "primer" is the right shade, because if the reefer grey is a darker shade that would be too dark. I don't have any reefer so can't be certain..

First pic with flash..

Next two no flash, just daylight through the window..

I dunno, the panels just look too blueish to my eye..darn screen pics are misleading. Should I carry on with the "primer" shade or make something to look closer to what I think I see on printed pics and on screen...arrgghh !
The turret panels look closer, they're a mix of grimey black and primer...

Discuss....please..lol

Gorram painting, always a faff...

Phil mate, just go with your heart, if it bugs you now it will bug you for ever. Think about what will go on top of the panels re weathering etc. Will this change the look to be more how you want. If your not happy start over on them. It doesn't matter if they look the same as the pics as these just dont help. Choose one single ref pic that you think has the colour you want then go for that colour.

Too much info will clog up the results you want to get! Post a pic of the best ref shot you have re colour for the panels and lets see the comparison to your colour?

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

I am in awe! I love the RPF; sorta a noob, here, not to props and forums, but here at the RPF. And so far I have seen some great builds. I know the time it takes to put into them as I have made a thing or two, and then on top of that take time to share it with us, well shows you have class. Thanks for sharing! Even more, you have mad skills!

Agreed, I have tried many times over the years to colour match paint from photos, old and new, at the end of the day you just have to pick one and run with it! :thumbsup

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

I've also learned you just can't trust photos to give you accurate color. And when painting, sometimes a color alone will have a totally different look when other colors are added around it. I agree though, go with your heart on this one.

[On a side note, if you were doing this for me I would say don't change a thing because it looks FANTASTIC!!!]

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Just to echo, keep on trucking Phil, your doing a killer job. Just go with what you think looks right to your eye, so far, its spot on!

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Thanks guys, it's odd 'cos sometimes when i look at it and compare pics, it looks like it could be ok, but then it'll look too blue..I think I'm goin nuts..
It will need a misting over with the base colour I think, to age it and whatever, so that might be what's wrong with it..
Anyhoo, these pics below are what looks right to me. They seem to be well lit, and look sorta right..

from the lucas archive book

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

I hate when you get to the point in a project where everything just seems wrong even tho its perfect hahaha.

I think you have the colour right, its just the lucas pics seem to be over exposed or just old faded pictures. I think you should test weather a primer panel and a regular panel and put them side by side, have a look and go from there.. The archive primer panels appear to be highlighted with a white in the centre and then darkened at the edges..wish i could tell you what colours they used!:p

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Hi Phil,
I know what you're going through. From my experiences as a graphic designer and illustrator, I've found that no one will ever match a color by going off any image you find in a book or archive. Unless you have the original sitting beside you or an actual paint chip you'll have to "wing it".

I think it looks good, but by the sounds of it you feel it's just "Okay". So if it were me I would change it now before you move forward. It'll be easier to do it now than later (when you have the other colors down). Guy is right... "if it bugs you now it will bug you forever."

From time to time, people think I'm crazy for starting over halfway through a project/job... but it has to do with listening to your gut.

Well that's my two cents. You're doing a great job. Just RELAX about the colors and paint... this should be the fun part.:lol

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Phil, its not my feeling that thinks its not right, it does look amazing. Only if your not happy with it is a reason to re do them.

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

On a lighter note phil, if you think you're having trouble with paint, my Falcon at the moment is just 2 very large sheets of 1.5mm styrene so there :lol

Go with what you like, because at the end of the day its your build :thumbsup

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

It can drive you nuts if you're picky like I am. That's why I went with the original colors, so I would no that despite my obsessiveness, they would be as close to right as is possible. Looking at my bird that Dean painted right now & that color does have a blue tone. If you'll notice, the large triangular panel with the large rectangular one below it near the cockpit, both have a slightly washed out appearance. When i redid my MR falcon I used the base coat and very lightly added the washed out area near the center. I don't know if on the original it was just because the panel was lightly painted for that kind of effect or if it's the weathering around it that makes the center look lighter but I tend to think it was just sprayed on very thinly. You'll notice some panels, especially the concrete ones like around the turret, are painted very lightly so that they are transparent and the base coat shows through them. Be careful when you do those panels not to over do it or the color will be to dark. Here is what the panel looked like on mine after I lightened the center a bit.

Don't throw anything at me but this one should be concrete.:lol

Re: 32" Falcon Progress/ more new piccys page 16

Thanks Chris, I feel better that you've said it's the right colour, I think I'll leave it as it is. Yeah, the panel in grey that should be concrete...I realised after I'd done it, that it was wrong, so I won't throw anything at you you, honest.. :lol
I really appreciate eveyone's imput, so all comment's are great !

Cheers all
