2001 Monolith build

if you check my design with the other builder of a Monolith, you can see a few things that are the same, and a few things that are different.

But I never would have attempted starting this project without the other guys photos to show me so many things...

last look before I call it a night.

I got out the tape and took the measurements.

and they are a bit different than what other guys might build to be sure.

height.....11 foot 10 inches

wide.....4 foot 1 inch

thick.....9" and 1/4 inches

from top of monolith to the bottom of the buried poles is.....a hair over 16 feet.

so its stands apart from other designs im sure...

The size is just what it ended up to be.
I did not really start this project to try to match inch for inch the movie prop..

I talked about before how the main design for the thing I have in mind is all based on the doorway from my living room into the dining room.
I have looked at that doorway opening for 30 years, , and it seemed to just always remind me of the 2001 monolith l so I designed my project with that doorway in my mind.

The monolith will just be 3 foot taller that the doorway, and as i write this Im looking over at that doorway and I have this gut feeling that I am going to be very happy with my results !

So, rear projection or front?
I have a secret plan for how I will display the finished Monolith.

I want lots of solar powered lights on it in a circle, for guests to be able to see the thing at night.

i want a bunch of bones on the ground ...

and...I would somehow like a solar powered speaker to kick on when anyone walks close, and it would play that same type of music/sound that was in the movie during the Moon Monolith part....

This video clip has the type of sound I would like to kick-on when a guest walks over to the Monolith....

I was thinking of some type of hidden outdoor speakers....?

I came up with a Plan "B"...

in the other guy's monolith page, at this point he sets up a way to spin the monolith as he does the drywall to both sides.
But I also noticed that you would need to be carfull from then on not to scratch the drywall corners and the paint.

There is also the matter of all the sanding dust to consider , as that might make a mess in my garage I never get free of in the future.

So I think i will just drag the monolith out to the backyard and set it up into the cement holes I will dig...and then later work on the drywall and painting .

less mess...less dust....less worry about scratches

I think you are making fine use of that acreage. Interesting walking paths are the coolest thing. I have a sliver of heavy undergrowth next to a creek and have high hopes of doing the moss covered statue path.

Time to haul over the sheet of plywood

I think my plan of actions for Day #4 will be to find a breath mask, and start sanding down the corners.
I think need to find a way to move the Monolith tomorrow so that I get my garage back.

My brother came over tonight and we went into the backyard and got a rough idea where the monolith will go.
he wants to find the most common wind direction in our area so that we face the narrow side of the monolith into the most common wind direction .
I think I have a lawn carts I use in my vineyard that should be strong enough to carry the weight of the Monolith if I can get them moved underneath and run some straps.

But....Im very happy today to have completed this project this far.

Day #4,,,,,the epic journey,,,,

today started out normal, with doing some sanding on the corners to make sure everything was flush.

after I was happy with how things were looking, I started to think about how I was going to move this monster into the back part of the yard by myself?

I have a garden cart,,,so I got it and put it next to the monolith,,,and ,,,it did not look up to the job.
But its all i got to use, so....I had to try.

Now im sure a smart man would have come up with a better, plan....
But my plan was short and sweet.

I would tip the monolith over and with luck it will not crush the garden trailer.

and,,,,,it landed hard, and the impact destroyed one of the tires...
