Hey guys,

Please enlighten those like me that don't understand what's so special about that kit? It seems pretty small no? Is that just a question of accuracy and I seems to remembre reading there is a 1/48 FM kit that would be bigger and ?equally detailed?

Jee .. from all the excitement, I'm almost inclined to buy one and I don't even know why!?! ;)

Thanks Tek,
That's what I thought .. although they seem so small .. I guess I got used to my MR Studio Scale! :)

On another note, anyone knows why they won't do it StudioScale size?

First of all there is disagreement about accuracy and scale, so just be aware. But this kit is incredibly detailed, with about 900 parts. Most of the detail is made up of individual parts to replicate the experience of the original model makers who put hundreds of random parts to create the detailed hull. Fine Molds took hundreds of photos of the original 32-inch filming model and tried their best to accurately represent this. Be aware this kit is based on the ship in ESB and RoTJ, and a fair amount of surgery is required to get rid of the extra front landing gear boxes. Some people preferred the look of the earlier ship. There are some (what I would call minor) differences in detail compared to the 5-foot studio model, and some would have preferred FM use that (even if they kept the extra gear boxes as they were added on to the 5-footer for ESB and RoTJ). The radar dish is too small, and the ... well ... something about the mandibles that were not supposed to talk about, and the over all thickness of the hull (measured from gun turret to gun turret) is slightly too flat. And some put the scale at closer to 1/95th or so. I believe that might cover the controversies that creep up. If none of them bother you--or if enough of them don't bother you--don't walk, run to get this. I've got three and I'm uber-tempted to get another.

That's dollars and cents. Or should I say yen and sense. The 32-incher would be at least $500, maybe $1000, and there's just not enough of a market to make a profit. I wouldn't be surprised if they had to sell them for what your MR costs. Those are still available on occasion at e-bay, and that's another kind of competition where you would like none. And some say (though it's never been proven, and even works against logic in some sense) that the license would be different and a lot more. That is, Fine Molds can't just do anything they want. Also, Fine Molds seems to be doing kits in comparable scales. The studio scale X-wings, etc. wouldn't be in scale with the 32-inch falcon. I never understood why they went with the 72nd scale kits right out of the gate as they seemed so small. I understood the risk was smaller, and the detail is very good. But when I saw the MF, it all made sense. And dollars and cents for Fine Molds.

The ammount of accurate detail on this kit FAR outweigh the few innacuracies. There's an old build diary on the boards thats worth looking up by Dana Jan.

Not at all sir. I just find it assinine that with the amount of positives, many will just point out the few innacuaracies and complain complain complain.

but then again, this is the internet...

Has anyone seen one of the assembled kits of this? While I would rather enjoy building my own I just don't know if I will have the time. On the other hand, it would probably be worth it to buy and store this until the kids go off to college and I have some time to myself. Of my course my hands may be a bit shaky by then...

NM - Answered my own question. Can't let someone else have the fun, plus I would just want to change it anyway. Ordering the kit.

The pre-built kit can be displayed with the landing gear up or down, but does anyone know if it can be retro-fitted to add lights to it?

The main reason why FM went with 1/72 out of the gate is simple Japanese marketing. In Japan, the average family or individual doesn't have the space available that a western household does. As such, space is more at a premium. Plus, 1/72 tends to be a more accepted scale internationally then 1/48 (which has its origins more with American model companies).

As such, they went with their first two or three subjects as being small, economical (relatively) and the size of the completed models appealed to most modelers and didn't take up too much space when done. Plus, FineMolds up to that point was doing pretty much all of their aircraft kits in 1/72 anyway. When the models became the phenomenon internationally that they did and FM saw the potential, that is when they probably opted to go 1/48 scale since they likely saw from the sales numbers that a large portion of their kits were being exported from Japan. Plus, by that point they had done the two Slave 1s and the Falcon in 1/72, so they knew that they could do models that were physically larger then their first 1/72 scale fighter offerings.
